View Full Version : Why Haven't We Gotten More PS3 Bluetooth Controllers/Accessories?

I first posted this in the tech forum and got very lightly singed, so I'm reposting here, which I guess is the more appropriate forum.

Reason #726350 why the PS3 has been a major disaapointment for me: Why haven't companies been releasing bluetooth controllers/accessories for PS3? Sony made all this hype about PS3 having bluetooth, and what have we gotten? A standard Playstation controller (the first version of which was lobotomized) and a remote.

Here's an example: I just purchased Rock Band 2 for PS3. Great game, and a lot of fun, but why no bluetooth instruments? I can partially understand why Rock Band 1 didn't have bluetooth instruments (PS3 was still "new", they wanted to see how well the game sold, etc.), but Rock Band 2? The instruments still require a dongle! WHY?!? Cost? I think if people are willing to pay $189 for the game (of course, I didn't pay that, I got in on the $109 Toys R Us deal with the extra $25 gift card :wink2:), wouldn't they be willing to pay $199 or $209 to get bluetooth instruments? If there were two versions of the game available, one with bluetooth instruments for an extra $20, and one with "dongle"/infrared instruments, I think I'd go for the bluetooth.

Is there something I'm missing?

i agree with you, the instruments definitely needed to be bluetooth... was pretty pissed I couldn't play with all the instruments in rock band 1 (mic, drum, guitar) because I didn't have enough USB ports. But to answer your question, I have no clue why they didn't make the instruments using bluetooth... i know i would have dropped the extra $20 to get it with them.

maybe cause the ps3 is the least selling system out of all 3.. maybe 3rd party companies dont really care about the ps3. honestly if I got too choose between selling too 10k people and 60k people which one would I be more focused on?

There's also BT headsets and a BT text pad that plugs into your controller for typing. But hey, if you feel like you've been slighted by Sony, go get a 360. It has tons of BT accessories.

You have 726,000 issues with the PS3? I think you got the wrong system man.

As for Rock Band, I personally think that Harmonix has dropped the ball with their PS3 support in general. The voice chat is jacked, and there were a few other issues that made me think "wow, they really don't care about PS3 owners do they".

Part of the appeal of Bluetooth support is the fact that it isn't necessary for specialized accessories, in some cases. Bluetooth keyboards and headsets, for example, are universally compatible for the most part... although the PS3 unfortunately doesn't support stereo bluetooth.

As for Rock Band instruments... I guess it was probably just a budgetary thing for them. It's a lot cheaper to manufacture USB components. So to go bluetooth, they'd either have to charge more for the PS3 version (which of course would get universally dumped on by everyone) or cut into their profits. You might be in the minority on that one.

I'll tell you something... there's probably a good fortune to be made for someone that can make a universally compatible USB to Bluetooth bridge. Picture a pair of USB dongles... one female, one male. If the target device supports bluetooth, you'd only need the female one.

Sony was hyping BlueTooth not because there would be special controllers for it but because you can use 3rd party components off the shelf. With the Xbox you need to buy their Headset, or their wireless dongle, with the PS3 any off the shelf blue tooth headset, mouse, keyboard will work.

Rockband not supporting BlueTooth isn't the PS3 or Sony's issue it's Harmonix.
