Not very normal at all. The PS3, unlike the 360, from what I hear, runs very quietlike. You should contact Sony on Friday and see what they have to say about it.

In short,
1) get used to it
2) repair w/ PS factory if it is within warranty / return if it is store bought within 30 days

Oh, that disc reading noise. I have it too, but I only hear it if I'm close and once in a while. Everything works fine for me, except it froze for a few seconds like twice. I will be using that kmart warranty I bought before it expires. I don't care if it's a 60gb unit =/
Also, is your PS3 still wrapped or something? o_o You should let air flow.

So.. I'm assuming that's not normal? It's louder when I play Uncharted.. I bought it through SonyReward.. and when I send it back I have to pay for everything shipping etc... Should I send it back? Or it is normal for PS3 to have that disc reading noise?
No.. It's not wrapped up.. I just used those white wrapper to cover the top of PS3..

Is ur PS3 vertical? I cannot tell from the video. I know my friends have that problem when it is vertical. You will hear a lot of more of the disc reading

hmmm, that is weird. It only does that for the GTA disc right? Have u checked the disc? Is there a scratch on the bottom?
Nevermind, I guess it the actual drive. It might be defective.

hanyeezy: I don't think there's a problem. My PS3 does something like this as well. What you're hearing is the disc spinning up and then data caching to the hard drive. I wouldn't worry about it very much.
My advice: take a vacuum cleaner to the side of the PS3 to clean out as much dust as possible. Get that cover off the top (it's also extending to the sides and impeding airflow). Keep your machine for another week, and post again if there's still trouble. Again, I get these sorts of noises all the time too.
PS: It may be louder when playing Uncharted because that game continually caches to the hard drive. As you know, it has no install & so does all its caching on the fly. This is not a problem.

Side note about dust: I've noticed a great deal of it collects on the front, on the angled vents underneath the power button... probably because this is an intake area. I hadn't noticed that for quite a while, until I finally unhooked the unit for the first time to give it a thorough vacuuming with my trusty dustbuster.

Oh.. Well.. It was my second PS3 and I was just curious.. also due to my lack of knowledge on PS3.. I will keep my PS3 for a week and do the vacuum on the side... and see what happens.. Thanks aridneptune for the helpful comment! ^^

Hi
I heard the only sound emanating from your PS3 would be the slight humming noise of it's cooling fan.
Is that true?
