Giveaway of the Day - Inpaint 1.0 (http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/inpaint-10/)

Delete any unwanted object from your photo, such as extra power-line, people, text… The program will automatically inpaint the selected area to erase it. Inpaint reconstructs the selected image area from the pixel near the area boundary. Inpaint may be used to remove undesirable objects from still images.

If some unexpected object spoils an otherwise good photograph, Inpaint may be used to remove it. Simply select the object. No need for fiddly messing about with the clone tool!

It is alarmingly simple to use. Draw a selection around the object you wish to remove from the picture, and run smart remove selection. Inpaint will fill the selection area with intelligently generated texture drawn from the surrounding image data.

I downloaded the program, tried it on a picture, and it didn't do a very good job at all.

You cannot select where you want the fill in area to copy from it just does a box around what you select to eliminate. Unless you are eliminating something in a large consistent background it will not work.

You can use the Lasso tool to outline any shape you want to remove from the photo. It's not perfect, but it surprising how well it fills in the area. The ideal would be for removing power lines or airplanes from a nice nature scene.

For a free tool I think it's a nice find!

Not to TC but GIMP is always free and can do this and so much more with a little time spent familiarizing yourself with the app.

you could also manually paint over each pixel using MSPaint which is also free :worship:

come on guys, GAOTD gives away one SW for free everyday, it does not make sense to make this thread as "hot topic":eek:if you say this is an amazing SW giveaway and therefore deserves to be hot topic, i would say many SWs from GAOTD gets 60-70% thumbs up, nothing special about it.
and yes, GIMP and other free SWs do these amazing jobs as well.

If you're interested in how the algorithm works, you can look at a similar program demonstration here. The video is very interesting and shows a pretty brilliant technique. The page also has a plugin for gimp.

I did a search both for Give Away of the Day and Inpaint before posting and they didn't show up, that's why I posted. Sorry if I stepped on anyone's toes!
