You guys might remember this story i posted back in december about a kid that killed his parents over halo 3. heres the link:

http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=1081050

Well heres the update to the story:

A while ago we talked about Daniel Petric, an Ohio teen who shot his mother dead and injured his father after being banned from playing Halo. His lawyers attempted the famous (and absurd) videogame defense -- blaming game obsession on the attack. Petric was found guilty, his game defense having been ruled out by the judge.

Lorain County Common Pleas Judge James Burge ruled that game addiction was no defense, and that evidence of premeditation was clear. This also shoots down the defense's claim that this was a moment of madness, not something Petric had planned to do.

Since the videogame defense is being recognized more and more as something that can lessen the accountability of a criminal, it's always good to know that not every judge in America is going to fall for such nonsense.

Pretty sure he's too young to get that type of treatment...

But hooray for the judge!! It's like... he actually knows how to do his job!

He was 17 at the time and some crimes at that age make you eligible for prison, don't they?

Some disturbing part of the story

News media:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7826663.stm
The Associated Press news agency reports that Microsoft, which owns the intellectual property for the game, declined to comment beyond a statement saying: "We are aware of the situation and it is a tragic case."

Judge:

The Court must enter a finding of guilty on the counts set forth in the indictment. That being said, it's my firm belief as a human being - and not as a jurist - that Daniel does suffer from a serious defect of the mind.

This Court's opinion is that we don't know enough about these video games. In this particular case, not so much the violence of the game because I believe in the Halo 3, what it amounts to is a contest to see who can shoot the most aliens who attack.

It's my firm belief that after a while the same physiological responses occur that occur in the ingestion of some drugs. And I believe that an addiction to these games can do the same thing. The dopamine surge, the stimulation of the nucleus accumbens - the same as an addiction. Such that when you stop, your brain won't stand for it.

The other dangerous thing about these games, in my opinion, is that when these changes occur, they occur in an environment that is delusional. Because you can shoot these aliens, and they're there again the next day. You have to shoot them again. And I firmly believe that Daniel Petric had no idea, at the time he hatched this plot, that if he killed his parents, they would be dead forever.
You got to be kidding me. Even a young kid can tell the difference between video games and real world. If they ever successfully put the blame on video games I would like to be the first to blame everything on WB Looney Toons.

Wait... I thought the judge threw out the dependence on Halo... but in that quote, it made it seem as though he supported the idea that the video game was to blame.

I think he was stating that's his personal feeling, but he knows that it's not based on conclusive enough evidence that it should be an allowable reason for ruling.

Totally different meaning for head shot.

I believe the quote is from a jurist. He says "and not [just] as a jurist" in the earlier paragraphs. I just think the OP may have made a small mistake in tagging it as the judge's quote.

How could he blame it on Halo? I thought he murdered the parents before playing the game. This kid was just full of hate. Preacher kids are usually the worst.
