I hope that this post does not break the TOS for Slickdeals, but I really thought it might help a SD member who is about to sign up for Vonage. I searched Slickdeals and did not see anyone else post this.
If you use a coupon code found online, the best deal you can get on the site is One Month Free (and the equipment for $9.99).
However, if you are referred by a Vonage customer, you get 2 Months Free and NO Activation Fee (and the equipment is still $9.99). You save an extra $54.
I would be happy to refer anyone. Full Disclosure: I would also get a kickback, but having a referral code is the best deal you are going to get.
If you are interested, you can e-mail me at: biggred2@gmail.com

I saw that one....but I believe that you do not get the free activation (worth $30) with that one.
If that deal comes with free activation, then anyone should go ahead and use that one. I only posted this offer of help because I was looking for something like this when I was ready to sign up.

There are so many better and cheaper VOIP companies then Vonage. How about equipment you can buy on eBay for about $25 shipped, plus $0 activation fee, plus no contracts, and only $19.95/month for unlimited dialing. Better yet, if you just want to receive calls, not make any, you can get a number for only $2.95 a month. Period. If you need to make calls on that plan, it's about $0.02/min.

There are better deals out there for Voip. I am not trying to talk anyone into Vonage. I picked Vonage because they are the biggest and one of the more financially stable (although they are still losing a ton of money each quarter). I think they will be around for a while...and the call quality is very good from my personal experience.
BUT, if a SDers has done their own research and has decided to sign up with Vonage. They should get the best deal possible.
In fact, I don't really even care if I refer them...but they should find a friend, coworker, or family member who has the service and can get them the deal.
If you want a DEAL, my friend has his cell phone service with T-mobile and got a Voip though T-mobile for $10 a month--unlimited calls, free equipment, etc. The only catch is that you must be a T-mobile customer. Also, you could use Skype for FREE.
Anyone interested in doing to research to switch should pick up the most recent Consumer's Report. They review Voip (as a part of various package deals, but it is still their first review of the service).

This is a good deal. I tried to get my activation fee waived when I tried out Vonage last month but couldn't.

This is a good deal. I tried to get my activation fee waived when I tried out Vonage last month but couldn't.
Just signed up for Vonage yesterday, and got 2 free months + 2 free months for a friend that referred me, and got them to waive the activiation fee. I just told them I was pricing around VOIP providers, and like what they had to offer, but really didn't want to pay the activation fee. The person on the phone put me on hold to talk to supervisor, and when they came back they said they could waive the fee.

Be warned though, if you prepay the annual plan, you don't get *any* money back if you end your service early for any reason....

Why would you do this and not MagicJack? for 19.95 a year? Am I missing something here ..and with a deal I found on SD a few months ago my MagicJack was only 19.95 w/coupon from staples etc. so I got the MagicJack and a year of service for only 19.95.

The difference is that with Magic Jack the computer has to be on to receive and make calls, so factor in the electricity usage.
