My mind is failing me. When in a forum and/or specific thread, how can you tell how many active users are also in it? And I believe you can also differentiate between registered and nonregistered as well. Any help is appreciated.

If you have it enabled in your user CP, then all users viewing a forum or thread will be listed at the bottom of the forum or thread. It will also say how many are registered users and how many are guests.

If you can't see the list of users, then you may have to enable it. Go to your user CP > Edit Options, then scroll all the way to the bottom and make sure 'yes' is checked for the display ' who's online' options.
