Avira free version IMO has the best antivirus scanning engine available. I would put it up against ANY paid antivirus. New version 9 goes a step further and adds antispyware protection. Reports have the new version running smooth as silk. Here are a few reviews and download links-

Yes there has been a free version of Avira for a while. But in the past some people have not used the program because there were no antispyware signatures included. That feature was previously only included in the paid version. Now that has changed as Avira includes antispyware protection in its newest free version. From the link you provided a person can navigate to this (http://www.free-av.com/en/products/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html) page and see what version 8 included. Version 9 is not yet available for download from Avira.com but can be downloaded from cnet.

I just figured some people would want to know about the newest free version and its new features.

can you still use the 3 months free thing with this?
If so, that would be awesome!

This doesn't catch some of the malware. You could use Avira and I recommend Malwarebytes.

I really like Avira, version 9 doesn't look like it follows the antivirus trend of wasting more memory exponentially each version. Atleast not yet. I'm going to try it out, thanks.

does version 9 have that annoying popup trying to get you to upgrade a minute or two everytime you reboot?

Thanks, I've been hunting around as my AVG is on the last day of updates.
I've been doing the same thing. I originally was going to update to AVG 8 but after reading how bloated it is, I'm ready to change to something else.

Right now I've narrowed it down to Avast and Avira. I'm unfamiliar with either and want one that isn't going to slow down my computer. What if anything should/do I need to know as far as the good and the bad of each?

AVG bites! Use this or download Avast.
As previously mentioned, also download Malware Bytes. That is a great free program for catching spyware.
The reasons AVG bites:
1) It misses tons of viruses and spyware. Even the 8.5 version. Proof:
I have previously used AVG years ago, uninstalled it, scanned and Avast found stuff it missed. This has also happened when I have done this with others even a staff member recently. She had AVG and thought her PC was running fine and AVG was catching things. I told her uninstall it and install Avast Pro. It found several things as did other spyware programs I told her to install and she scanned with.
2) AVG's virus vault is stupid. When it scans and finds problems it will put stuff in the virus vault. If you want to delete the virus, trojan or malware you are putting it back on your computer!! WTF is with that?? You want to get it off your PC. Avast and Norton and others will give you the option to delete it, and it deletes it off your computer. By not being able to do this in AVG you continue to expand the items in your vault and waste disc space unneccassarily. (typo I think. lol)

I can't comment on Avira but I like Avast. It will not hog RAM and slow down your PC. Read my other comments in this thread please.
Avast is slow on scanning on some PC's but not too bad. It is fast on mine.

Been there, done that with ALL of the virus scanners mentioned in this thread. I will NOT use ANY of the others at this point, even Avast. Avira was the ONLY one to help in removing the Antivirus 2009 Virus - the ONLY one. The other scanners simply miss too much or make it too difficult to remove files. I've graduated to new scanners about every two years - first AVG, then Avast, now Avira. I only use what finds and cleans EVERYTHING that I have seen on my families computers. Right now, Avira is the only one doing that. Quit wasting your time and don't complain about clicking OK once or twice a day. Use what works.

Every computer and user is different. Both Avira and Avast are quality programs. Try each one one at a time and see which you like best and which runs best on your computer.

Avira relies on heuristics a lot, as well as signatures, Avast relies mainly on signatures. Avast will will most likely produce fewer false positives while Avira will have a higher detection rate.

I've used most of the paid and free anti virus programs out there at 1 time or another. Avira is by far the best 1 out there right now. It will give false positives on most key gens but so do most of the other programs. It's a very simple and easy to use program and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an anti virus program. Closing a pop up window on it once or twice a day is a minor inconvenience. And for added safety you can use 1 of the free online scanners now and then to double check your system if it makes you feel safer!

I found some info on how to disable the pop up window for Avira. I was doing some random searching for info/opinions on which antivirus program was better and happened to run across this. Here is the link

Ok leaning towards Avira. Do you have any examples of false positives and what's a key gen?

AV-Comparatives has their latest test results out which grades antivirus programs pretty heavily in the false positive arena. Here is a link to their site with the latest test-

http://www.av-comparatives.org/comparativesreviews/main-tests/144

The false positive info begins on page 11 and on page 16 of the report you can see what Avira gave a false alarm for.
