i have mixed feelings about them. nine times out of ten, i'm on here not looking for anything specific, and the thread titles mean more to me than the icons. the icons are a distraction to me. then again, for those times where I am looking for something particular, it would help if we can sort based on the icon. maybe a future enhancement?

at any rate, good effort SD. i'm sure some will enjoy it.

Now that you mention it, they do distract me. It turns all of my attention towards the icon and not the deal title.

Same here. They are very distracting. They take all of my attention away from the deal title and draw it towards the icons.

We should have an option to take them off or at least instead of making them images just usE text such as:

Maybe they will grow on me... But right now they are just distracting... And my eyes hurt when reading the post... But change takes time to get use to sometimes...

I actually like them. It would be good however to be able to toggle them on or off in the user control panel for those that resist change :)

What I think is useless is the far left icons that have always been there - telling you if a thread is locked or hot or standard. Not too helpful as you can get that info from elsewhere on the same line. Could save space to be able to toggle those too.

it does seem like a distraction. It's not so bad when a few posts showed up with the icon but when there's a screenful of these large eye-catching icons it's harder to scan post titles.

Nice little icons. Maybe they should be blinking. Like like 2 slow blinks for Apparel and 3 fast blinks for Tech Items. :wacko:

Actually, I find them terribly distracting. Might learn to not see them after a while.

They are distracting because they are new. I like the way you can click on a category and bring up only hot deals from that category..........kinda slick if you ask me. Turning them off option would seem like a good solution for everyone though.

I don't know, I think they are distracting because they are big, and not all posts have them, so it is inconsistant.

I think it would be ok if they were much smaller. Size does matter, smaller is better.

Just some helpful advice... Ctrl+Scroll wheel and make it smaller and less annoying... But my eyes are too weak for that... But hey... Thanks for having a great site, annoying tags and all... :) ...

Icons take away from SD's nice clean, 'slick' look. Hopefully there'll be a way to turn them off soon. I admit that labels are not a totally bad idea to help sort through the masses of deals, and I agree with the other post that text labels might have been a better choice & maybe should be an option.

Since I don't have a CostCo within 100 miles of me, I'm not too interested in the latest "I just found salmon for $6.99/lb at my Costco! It was on clearance so YMMV!" type posts.

While I appareciate the hard work that went into it, I would vote to remove it.

Love the site, but the newly implemented icons have really distracted from my browsing. I agree with others who suggested either have them be a feature you can disable or figure out some way to make them less prominent.

Perhaps you could move them to the far right of the page?

If there was option to sort by these catergories, then it would have made sense otherwise they are just useless. For ex. Everyone know Nokia 6010 is in phone category.

I don't use Firefox or Adblock, so I can't give you real instructions. But I can tell you that the icons all appear to be in the directory:
http://img.slickdeals.net/images/icon9/

So if you can block a directory with Adblock, that would do the trick.

Opera users can simply add the line:
http://img.slickdeals.net/images/icon9/*

to the file filter.ini (wherever your Opera preferences are stored), anywhere under [exclude].

Edit: for the Product Reviews forum, use 19 insted of 9.

I'm a fan of the new category icons. Here is why: I rarely use slickdeals for tech deals. I look more often than not for Home stuff, clothing, random stuff such as the above. I have to search eons for these in the sea of tech deals. The new category options make it nice and easy. However, for those of you who just look for a plain ol' slickdeal, they probably seem distracting and pointless. Just thought i'd throw in my two cents.

How to do it ?In Firefox, with the Ad-block extension installed, right mouse click on one of the images.

Click on "Ad-block image." You'll see something like:

http://img.slickdeals.net/images/icon9/audio.gif.

Change that to http://img.slickdeals.net/images/icon9/*.gif and click OK.

This will block all images in the icon9 directory.

If they did that, then it might be too close to copying one of Staples coropate emblems and then lead to copyright infringement issues... (Oh god... I just spouted out something from copyrights class on SD! :lmao: )

OK, if they decide to keep these icons then can they at least make the groupings carry over from one page to the next? It was damn frustrating today to be searching for a tech special, not find it on the first page of grouped tech, and when I went to page two it was all scrambled stuff again... clicking on a tech icon to regroup just put me back on page 1!!!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
