Sony Computer Entertainment
America (SCEA) hardware marketing boss John Koller has told VG247 that upcoming online shooter MAG is only possible on PlayStation 3.
“If you look at that competitively, it’s something that’s only possible on PS3. The processor speed, the ability of PS3 to showcase 256 players at any given time, and their actions.” said Koller at the GDC last week.
“It’s basically like an iteration of SOCOM, where you’re maybe commanding the SEALs, and someone else has the Rangers, and the Green Berets, and so on,” he added.
MAG was originally revealed at E3 2008 and has the distinct honour of being the first console title to include up to 256 players on screen. It will be interesting to see how the game pans out once it is released, and you can be sure that PlayStation Universe be watching it closely.

256 user controller players over PSN? Should be interesting and probably laggy.

I can't wrap my head around 200+ people playing together with any kind of organization. I know some people are pumped about this game, but I can't imagine how it will work... I don't like total chaos when I'm playing.

i have a feeling this game will spawn a whole slew of videos similar to "leeeeeroy jenkins" {in that organization will be total crap}

the descriptions i've read of this game all mention it will be grouping players into squads of 8.
so my impression is the set up will be similar to what was done with Skirmish on Resistance 2 where you have squad vs squad in individual isolated areas of the map and occasionally several groups converging or crossing at once.
i highly doubt it will be 128 people spawn in Base A and 128 people spawn in Base B and just go at it in a free-for-all.
if they did then, you can just imagine the cluster-fs in Killzone 2 now multiplied by 8.
ewww
hopefully they have tanks

Like sladeums said it's going to break down into 16 8 man squads so you probably won't be able to hear them. Hopefully they'll also include proximity chat like KZ2.

We used to do it in Halo 2 Big Team. People didn't know what to do. It was hysterical.

I'm sooooo farking sick of Sony hyping games that aren't even out yet.
Are there even screenshots of what this will look like? Video?
I don't care if there are 1,000 people playing together if it's going to look like Goldeneye.

That would be pretty dumb of Sony since the game probably won't see life on the PS3. As I understand it, right now, it's exclusive to Games for Windows and 360.

you know, i hate to imagine the servers....with BF2142 the Titan maps that go 64 players, you can not move whenever someone attempts to move the titan, then again EA's servers for that game is utter garbage.

Why in the world would you people be excited about what Zipper is going to do. The same people who added vehicles to Socom. The only developer out their worse than Zipper would be slant six
Phreaker47

This is Zipper, responsible for the PS2 Socom games (and not the messed up S:C that Slant Six did), so that's a good start as far as being able to believe in the hype.
I am sure that "normal" scaled down 16/32 etc player games will also be possible. In Socom 3, they had very large maps but if you played 16 player instead of 32, each map would shrink accordingly to just a certain section of it. I'm sure they'll incorporate something similar here.
I think Killzone 2 will hold me over... at least, by the time I'm sick of it (not yet), I can take a break from shooters and have this and MW2 to look forward to.

And the same people that made the great Socom 1 and 2 in the first place, so why not?. I think they heard enough complaints about Socom 3 to hopefully take some of it to heart.
The real bummer about Socom: Confrontation was that they seemed to understand this as well, saying that Socom 2 was their basic blueprint. Then they had to implement this weird control system that nobody liked and launched with horrific server conditions to basically ruin the whole thing.

I know this is going to rile up some fanboys but I have to say, statements like the quoted really get my goat.
The PS3 is doing well, it's showing it's own and some of the "potential" that the PS3 has always touted is finally really making a showing. But since day one and before there have been statements about how great PS3 is and how it's the only one that can do this and that because of how great it is.
On one side we get people saying the PS3 is so great that the good stuff can only happen on PS3, but yet it seems to me that the PS3 version of a game is almost always "as good" or "almost as good" as it's 360 counterpart.
I can't blame Xbox fanboys for trying to drive home that you can't simultaneously claim the biggest and best and the only one who has the ability to do stuff while simultaneously saying that your games being equal to or only slightly worse than the competition is fine.
It happens both ways with Xbox fanboys claiming the RROD isn't really a big deal, but at least to some people a $200 dead console really isn't a big deal (maybe they are just rich) but the PS3 marketing engine going at it like this is just rediculous.

Well, the think about not looking as good or just as good is cause some times they suck at ports. And the thing about this game that'll make it only possible on the PS3 is rendering the amount of players on screen, not really the graphics, right?
Oh wait, reread your paragraph. Yeah, the thing about PS3 getting better graphics and such is just sort of stupid at this point. None of them really do have better graphics enough to tout about it. Maybe in the future, but not now.
And for the RROD part, it's not really a dead $200 console, but the fact that they can repair it. But if they still say it's alright after their warranty is out and they have a dead one, it beats me.
Both sides have ignorant people(fanboys/uninformed).

Not sure I entirely follow your reply but here is the cliffs notes of mine:
Sony (and some of their supporters) are ridiculously blatent with their arrogance. Even if the reason the PS3 versions of games are worse is because they are poor ports, it still begs why there are few or no games that go the other way.
Basically you can't say "My football team is so awesome no one else could dream of being as good - btw their record is only SLIGHTLY worse than the average football team, not enough to be a big deal".

Certainly anythings possible, but I would go so far as to say I doubt it if it's still between ms and sony.
MS in my opinion has always had a history of claiming their wrongdoings aren't so wrong. It's their MO if you will.
Sony's MO seems to have been belittling the competition and hyping their own with apparent goldfish memory. Everyone talks up their product but it seems to me that ever since the first announcements of the PS2 Sony has been blowing smoke like no ones business with super inflated triangle rendering counts and bogus claims about products which were more catchy name than real performance. I still to this day am not sure what exactly the emotion engine was all about.
I think Sony plays on two major facts a lot:
A large percent of the fanboys will not know what they are talking about but believe it like gospel.
Fanboys are like restaraunt employees, constantly rolling over and replacing the old with the new.
The first means that if you tell people the emotion engine will make games so realistic you will believe the characters will have emotions and show a cgi clip to back it, people who have no idea understanding how such a thing could be accomplished (or know why such a thing makes no sense to claim) will back you whole heartedly because "duh its got emotion right there in the name".
The second means that you can keep making bogus claims because very often by the time your current fan boys realize they were lied too, they will move over and make room for a new bunch who haven't been lied to yet.
So if I had to guess, and history continues, MS will probably do something dubious, maybe rip off someone elses technology or have some failure they just won't acknoledge. The cell processor will be the next emotion engine. The PS4 will have some crazy new piece of hardware that has potential, Sony will claim 10x the real potential of the part and will relize about 1/2 of it by the time PS5 comes along with some newer crazier piece of hardware.

Didn't this happen with last gen? Multiplatform titles looked the same b/t the PS2 and Xbox despite the xbox touting superior hardware.
