View Full Version : All the chatter and lack of deals???

I like most everyone who is a regular on this board check it first thing in the AM, then again 20 minutes later for the rest of the day.
My only problem is that some of these people are not posting any deals. Just token responses to what others are finding and that is somehow "good for the village". Then they flood the lounge with nonsense fluff and make opinion posts and post to their own thread 50 times. If this is a silent attempt for a newbie to get their post count up and be seen on the board then fine. Annoying but fine. Perhaps we can do away with point count all together so their is no desire to be all over the place.
Or give consideration that this place is for "deals" and not for who has the coolest avatar, how many people have stepped on gum before, etc... That is why there are chat rooms outside of this board. Think of it like school. You go to school to learn. Not to socialize for 8 hours a day. So when you come to slickdeals IMO, you come to post the deals you have found or experiences related to those deals etc... Not to talk about the color paint in your dorm room, or your roomates girlfriend etc...
I, like many others and several who don't even frequent here anymore are frustrated with clicking on "new posts" and seeing 90% of the posts being in the LOUNGE. Maybe a solution would be not to put LOUNGE posts at the top of the "new posts" in order to see the deals that have resurfaced.
That is my opinion I welcome yours.

I'm sorry, I'm guilty. I will get right on that and post some more freebies tonight. <hanging head in shame> :( :( :(

the lounge is a fun thing. if you really don't want to read any of those posts, stop going to the new post buttons and just click the forums. some people enjoy talking to each other on these message boards.

Fun is an opinion and everyone has them... I hit the "new posts" cause it is the most efficent way to see what the newest deals and hear the voices of those who find them or had problems.
I think if I was going to talk about my music interest, or personal life with complete strangers I would visit http://chat.yahoo.com/ and talk away. But if I have a great deal that I want to share and give back to those that have given to me, I come to slickdeals.

if you see tons of lounge posts, then its not to efficient when you hit new posts. is it really a problem to search the forums you want to see by your self?

I am just making a point that this isn't the place to talk about personal crap, but a place to discuss deals. It hasn't always been this way, and I expect in a month or two when some of the Lounge Lizards wonder off and find a new website slickdeals.net will regain its stand on people posting good deals instead of opinions of musical interests, daily thoughts, and the like. Not talking directly to anyone but just in general.

there are different forums. if people were all chatting in the hot deal section and slick deal forum i would agree. but its nice to get to know some of the people who frequent this site. need help on a cetain subject, want to see if anyone shares the same hobby, interests that's what goes on in the lounge. also if you have a funny story or something that gives someone else a chuckle, what's wrong with that? this is what mr slickdeals described what should go on in the lounge: Talk about anything not categorized above. the forums are divided into two categories, slickdeals discussion and everything else.

I'm thinking you're just getting bored, because it looks like you did participate in some of the "personal crap" and even started a couple.

I just added a feature. Click on the "View New Deal Posts (http://slickdeals.net/forums/search.php?action=getnewdeals)" on the upper right and all the non deal related forums are filtered out.

I felt compelled and debated if I should even post those as I knew someone with more time then sense would search my posts and find a few.
Thank You Slickdeals for the new format of searching new posts. I think many will appreciate it as much as I do.

I just wanted to thank you for the new "view new deals" button! Hopefully users will start posting their opinions and other chatter in the lounge. This way we won't have to go through 6 pages of who should be President to see a great deal.
But really, thatnk you!

Admittedly I haven't posted too many "hot deals" but I try to respect the fact that there is a "freebies" forum a "free magazine" forum a "rebate" forum coupon forum etc, by posting chit-chat in the lounge which is titled talk about ANYTHING not titled above. I think that is the point of a lounge. And yes yahoo has forums, but I think that the ppl that frequent slickdeals have at least one common interest and thus brings in a unique group of ppl that I find interesting. Additionally since I may not be the best bargain hunter I try to post what I do find to support the site, plus try to help others when they have product questions etc. (which is something I am good at, having worked as a Tech and in an electronics retail mgmt, having used/sold most products in the last 4yrs). If slickdeals doesn't want a lounge then so be it, though I will probably not "lounge" elsewhere if this is removed.
Additionally I have taken note to your 630+ posts... these could be all slickdeals, or you too could be availing yourself of the lounge, as is probably the case.
By the way I didn't step in gum today and isn't my avatar cool, whoa!!! look at my level. HEY who's gonna start the dorm room color thread? <--- joking
In all honesty I report what I find, if anything although I'm heading out to KB to shop games, and keep my posts in the appropriate forum. If your opinion is that of Mr. Slickdeals himself then I will graciously take my chit chat elsewhere IE class, bar, etc.

P.S. I really think threads such as the debate over "AMD v. Intel" or the "bikes" thread does contribute to slickdeals because it saves ppl from buying something they won't be happy with thus getting a bad deal.
And I think it is really informative/invaluable, that when I am on the market for an item I can get not only help with where to buy it, but normally a very blunt and honest (often harsh) criticism of the product from ppl who have used it. I don't know too many ppl that have the pc knowledge as most here, so input is appreciated.
The adware / spyware thread helped my out tremendously, I was relying solely on McAfee, I didn't know about the blackviper site either and have already used it to speed up my comp tremendously, but to judge the comments of some by labeling them chit-chat, yet stating yours are truly "slickdeals" and thus more important is a bit too judgmental, even perhaps hypocritical in a sense.
Not trying to be confrontation, but I derive a benefit (sometimes minimal) from the lounge, as do others or it wouldn't be so popular.

And you just like to cause controversy. People are allowed to express their opinions without being attacked. He presented his concern very politely and was not rude at all. Nothing wrong with posting a Lounge post now and then, he just feels as though the posts are excessive. Everyone just chill out.

how do i "just like to cause controversy"?

By always trying to find any little fault or item that is questionable and calling them out on it.
Juggernaut
01-30-2004, 08:44 AM
1) When have I looked for any little item or fault and "called someone out on it"? All I was doing was merely pointing out that it appears he enjoys the non-deal chit chat along with the others.
2) Was he really polite about it?

This is my opinion, I welcome yours.

3) And now back to the pot calling the kettle black. How bout this thread (http://www.slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=12958) where you pointed out "they will send you lots of junk mail though asking for donations." As I'm sure it was just your warning to others what will happen. I'm also sure that some people might look at it as you complaining about the freebie and recommending others to stay away from it.
I think the main problem is that human nature tends to have an overwhelming power to make everyone look at things negatively at first and take things the wrong way (especially with the mono-tone we use to communicate with each other in these forums).
I'm not here to fight with people, I'm looking for deals and posting "my opinion" on things I may have knowledge about. If you feel that my posts are "always trying to find any little fault or item that is questionable and calling them out on it." then you have the right to add me to your ignore list. But, If I remember right, I gave you some answers when you were told your clutch was going out. No I don't know it all, but I try to help with what I can and occasionally post my opinion.
Ambah

You're right about one thing: you certainly cannot hear the tone of voice in which things are meant when typing.
Oh and if you did answer my thread about the clutch, I thank you. Honestly I don't remember everyone on here who doesn't have 900 posts or more, LOL.
Point taken. I just didn't like the way you tried to "trap" me yesterday and then today you had the comment on the "pot calling the kettle black". Everything's fine though between us as far as I'm concerned. The main thing we all need to remember here is that this is JUST a message board, no need to get worked up.
Thanks, Amber

Every so often, Ambah hits the mark. And I completely agree with her that nearly all of the 'regs' on this message board need to take their ritalin and try their hardest not to poop a brick when someone posts a topic that they disagree with.
Ambah, since you're such a champion of the right to express opinions without being subject to attack, how about laying off of Juggernaut? So you're allowed to point out his flaws - as you see them, but he doesn't have the right to mention when someone is acting hypocritically? I hope that clarifies the "pot calling the kettle black" remark.
Or how about this: If you don't like reading posts about screwing over the beloved post office, hit the back button on your browser and resume pissing away the daylight hours playing online. If people can post about thong pantiliners and free sample pet food, then I can definitely show off my postage alternative. This isn't Iran, they won't cut off your hands for insubordinate speech about the beloved post office.
Thanks, thegoalie
