Moma in NY, NY is always free they ask for a recommended donation but it is not actually required. The Natural History Museum is the same way.

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts - Millennium Stage: is really not a museum and has always been free. Washington's free museums are the Smithsonian, of course:).

I think all museums that are run by the city of new york are free. Just like you said they ask for a recommended donation. They will not tell you that.....you have to tell them that you want to make a small donation.

I am pretty sure any time a museum asks for a "donation" you can politely decline.

I went to a museum tour last summer with my children and the recommended donation was $8 or so for adults and $4 for children. I quietly and politely told the lady at the ticket desk that I didn't bring any money for a donation and we were all given tickets anyway.

This would only work if the museum asks for a donation and not an admission.

Does that means I can go to the Natural History Museum with my family and donate $20 for all of us and they will let us enter?

What do I need to say?

Hi all,

Did a search, hope this is not a repost. Target is offering free admission to art museums in major metropolitan areas throughout the U.S. This past weekend I went to our local museum of Latin American art and had a fabulously free time with friends!

Does that means I can go to the Natural History Museum with my family and donate $20 for all of us and they will let us enter?

What do I need to say?

To make a donation in any amount (yes, that means you can pay $20 for the whole family) you will have to purchase your tickets at the museum from the admission people, meaning if you purchase advanced tickets online or from the ticket machines in the lobby, you will have to pay the full suggested admission price.

Note though that special exhibits at the AMNH require a special fee that is NOT suggested. However, I have seen that some branches of the Brooklyn Public Library occasionally have tickets that give free admission to one special exhibit of your choice or the space show to families (you have to be accompanied by a child).

Hope that answers it! http://www.amnh.org/museum/welcome/admission.html

EDIT: Oh, and what you do is you give your $20 (or whatever amount) to the admissions person and say "3 tickets, please" (or however many tickets you need).

I think it would be great if somehow this thread could be combined with http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=522643&t=1122391

I've made a list of many NYC museums and their free days in the wiki of that thread and some recommended websites.

Enjoy!
