View Full Version : Favorite Game Genre?

I am curious as to what everyone's favorite game genre is. I am expecting an overwhelming response favoring FPS but I personally favor a 3PS over a FPS any day. I used to enjoy RPGs a lot but now I find them hard to get into because I lack the time commitment ability.

I've got a feeling I've probably left some games out and maybe diluted some categories too much (stealth outside of 3PS etc) but whatever.

EDIT: Now public

God of War should be its own genre. :P

Aside from that, its a toss up between FPS and 3PS.

Man.. this is tough. I don't see why people like 3PS so much.. it seems as though you lose a lot of control due to having to do extra work w/the camera angles.

I'd say my top 2 are
FPS
RTS

I used to like MMOs/RPGs, but got quite burnt out over both genres thanks to WoW. Eh... I guess I'm have to go w/FPS.

Survival Horror baby! The Fatal Frame games are probably my favorites ever.

Next would probably be Fighting games like DOA, SF and Soul Calibur.

Then RPG's like Persona 3 FES, LOTR etc.

Huh, I love racing games, FPS, and Sandbox.... not usually a lot of sports but that's not a rule

I put survival horror. I guess I don't really have a favorite anymore, because I used to love RPGs like FF4-6 and Chrono Trigger, but that style is basically dead. I used to not really like FPS that much but so many games now are FPS that it's basically impossible not to enjoy them and still enjoy playing video games.

i play all styles of games, but i must say that FPS rules my day. between Rainbow Six Vegas 2, COD4, and Halo 3 not many of my other titles find their way into the 360.

I'm not going to vote because I don't have a hands down favorite. I like RPG's and FPS but I don't think one wins out over the other.

To me, fighting games are pretty much dead to me unless it has some RPG mechanics to it since in age of the arcade centers has long since past.

Oops, just realized I forgot the rhythm genre. Surprised no one called me out on that yet.

It used to be RPGs, but I really dont invest that much time into games anymore.

I voted sandbox, since you just jump in and create your own fun.

I love the survival horror genre, but I don't put nearly as many hours into it as I do straight FPSs... and certain if I were to log all my time over the years, the majority of my time would be FPSs by a long shot.

RPGs!
although MMO should have an RPG section

I chose other, because I'm at a point in my life where games are being squeezed out. Not because I don't like to play them, but because I don't have time for them. My favorite games right now are the party games or games that we can play in large (local) groups like Singstar, Guitar Hero and the 3 on 3 cartoonish Hockey game on PSN. At this point, the only game that I'm actually making time in my schedule to play is Uncharted 2. I CAN'T WAIT!!

definitely FPS&RPG hybrids like Mass Effect, Fallout 3. Looking forward to Alpha Protocol, Borderland, Dragon Age and Deus Ex this year.

action RPGS like KOTOR, Jade Empire are a close second

I'm not even sure what genre I like the best. I think the most fun I've had in a game was probably GTA: Vice City, so maybe open-world/sandbox type of games, though there aren't a ton of those. Aside from that, I've really enjoyed every RPG I've played (KOTOR, Kingdom Hearts, Dark Cloud, Magical Starsign, and a few FF titles)

There are a few categories i could have gone with but i chose MMOs. It all started with ffxi, then wow/war, and hopefully with the next few months it will be aion and in 2010 ffxiv. I can't wait for next year.

I say Hybrid RPG with Sandbox, Puzzle, RPGs, and the non-existant Rhythm close behind.

The problem is that good sandbox games are pretty few and far between. Some are so well done while others are pretty terrible. Good ones, you can pick up and play for 30 minutes here or 45 minutes there and just mess around. Can be lots of fun.

Puzzle games are what I play nearly exclusively on my portables, but they don't do it for me on consoles. The pick up and play accessibility is what makes them tops for me on the go.

RPGs take so much of a time commitment most of the time so I tend to play them on my portables when on a long trip and I'm not playing a puzzle game. The problem is that I don't have two or three hours a day that you need to really get into a story and enjoy a console RPG. Which brings me to...

Rhythm games are my go-to games when I
1. have people over who want to play a game or
2. have about 35 minutes to play and don't want to worry about the distance between save points or length of cutscenes.

I've got to say I'm shocked that RPG is keeping neck and neck with FPS even though some of my favorite games of all time are RPGs (FFVII and Lunar Silver Star Story Complete).

I'm also really surprised that I'm alone in choosing 3PS.

Not that I can actually speak for the people who voted, but I myself almost picked RPG because it *used* to be my favorite w/the lower FF games, secret of mana... bunch of SNES RPGs that I just played to no end. But if I look where I actually spend the majority of time, it's in FPS, even though the time is spent in shorter bursts (RPG time is usually ALWAYs measured in hours for me, while I might play FPS for half an hour here or there, or possibly a few hours from time to time).

honestly i can say i really don't see the enjoyment of playing FPS/3PS, imo shooting someone isn't really fun lol.
I mean i know why its so popular because of the competitiveness of the genre, and fragging a friend is always fun. Maybe im turned off because i got owned left and right by buddies who were in the top clans during CS 1.4 and 1.5 lol.
I'd rather a story game than mindless shooting, thats why RPG got my vote.

I'm actually not a fan of multiplayer FPS or 3PS at all either really. I'll play it from time to time but don't find it that great.

I really liked Uncharted because I thought the story and characters were interesting while the gameplay was fun & exciting. I agree that good games have good stories but JRPGs just don't do it for me anymore. This is HIGHLY likely due to my inability to sit and play for hours though playing random encounter after random encounter.

Surprised I'm the only person who voted Sports, so far. Madden has been taking up far too much of my time for the past 10 years. I still play the occasional Survival Horror game and Stealth Game. I've always been pretty terrible at First Person Shooters, so I've mainly stayed away. Back in the day I was all about Platformers and Fighting games.

I voted for racing, but sports was close. It's mainly because I'm happier with what's been coming out in driving games (Burnout, Motorstorm, Wipeout are current faves) and a bit disappointed in how stale many of the sports games have become. EA was the main reason I didn't vote for sports.

sports games hands down for me...and I only play those online or with a friend. Madden from Release to October (NBA 2k9 Release) to Madden Release..Rinse repeat. I then mix in a few of the big FPS for offline enjoyment

Haven't FNR3 for a while, bur FNR4 looks like it may cut into my other sports online gaming.

Ever play NCAA Football? I'm looking forward to 10. Also hoping Madden does an online Franchise this year(which should have been implemented last year).

I could pick 3PS over FPS except that there just aren't that many good 3PS games out there... there are a lot more good FPS. I like them about the same.

I believe it's just an RPG that's done in FPS/3PS view point.

I voted RPG, didn't see the Hybrid option, I do like both. I just consider Hybrid RPGs, RPGs. Since the core of the game is RPG.
