Probably not directly. They probably traded a lot of advertising to get this promotion going.HP recognized the great exposure this site produces and realized they would raise a lot of good will. Have you actually seen how many offers from HP make it to hot deals, they probably make a lot of money from this site in the first place. A hot deal thread can drive a lot of sales in a very short period of time, especially with some of the people who re-sell on ebay.

I'm not sure, but I think when the prize get over a certain amount SD is required to report it directly to the Gov't... so the question is, if you have to pay gift tax on the MSRP of this laptop would it be cheaper than the front page deals for the same laptop that show up all the time?

I think the promo is to attract new members, new sign-ups for daily deal alerts, increased traffic for ad revenue, etc. Not to reward old members. Otherwise you'd get extra entries for Front Page posts, number of (at least one thumbs up) deals posted, helpful posts, duration of membership, and those kinds of things. You have to understand the nature of the business, and hope you get lucky.
And put up with a lot of spam, like the 'newbies'.

I understand the feeling of having "new" people winning without any regards of how this site is ran, and to be honest, I did register for a new laptop for school, but I do have every intentions of coming back to site.
