View Full Version : Google Voice + Gizmo5 + ATA = Free Voip

Starting today you are able to configure an ATA using Google Voice and Gizmo5 to get free Voip calling. In other words, if you have a high speed connection, you can have a free home telephone line with inbound and outbound calling utilizing GV. Prior to today you needed some form of telephone service to utilize GV. Now you don't.

In a nutshell, the solution below requires that you provide your Google email credentials to Gizmo5 in order to make the connection to Google Voice for free (unlimited...expired) (20-minute...expired) 3-minute calling. However, if you do not want to be limited by the three minute call limit, you of course have the option to pay for the service and the call duration limitation will be lifted.
Details of the program are available from the Gizmo Project (aka "Gizmo5") directly . . . it is highly suggested you give their site a read due to the constant change in terms, conditions, and other program details. The direct link is available here:
http://www.gizmovoice.com/
FYI, you may sign-up for the paid version of the service here (as of 8/16/2009 new account sign-ups qualify for a free $10 account credit):

"Newly discovered issues with both security and Gizmo5's business model as pertains to making calls through Google Voice have given us pause in recommending the solution described below.
Party is over. To protect the security & integrity of your Google Account, it may be prudent to consider changing your Google password.
iPhone App Siphon + Gizmo5 + Google Voice Instructions (http://www.voicetalk.org/2009/08/08/siphon-google-voice-gizmo5-iphone-app-calls/)
Alternative Experimental Method (by az1324) -- GVOut
This method requires a networked computer to be running anytime you want to use the phone.

Here's a little new toy I whipped up that lets you dial out using google voice in combination with one of the free incoming SIP services. It is a small Windows program. This is experimental and I can't guarantee it will work with your setup.
It acts as a proxy for your ATA connection to the SIP server. When you dial out via phone, you get an immediate busy signal. Then hang up and with a few seconds your phone will ring with the incoming connection from GV. Pick it up and your call is connected. It's not an ideal solution but works ok and is more convenient than using a web dialer etc... and its incoming so no 3 minute time limit.
Enter the SIP Server of your free incoming service (gizmo5, sipgate) then enter the phone number associated with that account (must be in your GV account too).
Enjoy.

This Wiki is crazy confusing, read through the thread to learn how to configure.
Look no further, Gizmo5 is redirecting you to this site for a clean setup and no surprise, it is called gizmovoice (http://www.gizmovoice.com/). Also be aware that now outbound call is limited to 20 min per call.
Update: Users report that now outbound call is limited to 3 min per call.
FYI: If you cannot wait for an invite, they are around $2-3 on eBay.
Details:
Just checked out the gizmo5 configuration page, it now has a Google Voice section where you can input your GV username and password. What this does is when you setup a VoIP application or phone with your Gizmo5 login information (make SURE you are using the 10+1 digit gizmo5 phone number to login, not the gizmo5 username), you get free outgoing calling (direct dial)! No more using a separate application or the web to call your gizmo5 number first with your GV #. Just pick a contact and call away. This is great news that gizmo5 and google are collaborating together. I forsee another google takeover soon (I hope).
I tested this with Siphon (iPhone app, from Cydia - free, allows calls over 3gedge) and was able to make outgoing calls right from the VoIP app - before I had to open GVMobile (separate app to call your Gizmo number first before placing the outgoing call), otherwise it would state "you have no gizmo5 outgoing credit, etc".
Works perfectly with Sipdroid for all android phones, must install the version off there site http://sipdroid.org/ if you want to utilitize 3G/Edge calling, if not the version on the market uses Wlan and works just as well. Use setting below
Steps:
1) Login to your gizmo5 (www.gizmo5.com) account page
2) enter your GV username and password
3) Go to your SIPVoip Deviceapplication and enter the following: (or just download the gizmo5 application)
-Username: your 1+10 digit Gizmo5 number found on your Gizmo account page
-Password: enter your password
-Server: proxy01.sipphone.com
4) Login to GV and add your Gizmo5 number and verify it - pick up the call when you receive it and enter the verification code
DONE - free, easy to use outgoing and incoming calls with your GV number! Everything works great, when you call out, it shows your GV #, and when ppl call your GV #, it should ring your gizmo5 account!
You can also buy an ATA addon and hook up your landline phone to it and use the same settings! Been reading forums and it seems that the Linksys PAP2 NA is the recommended ATA: http://cgi.ebay.com/LINKSYS-PAP2-NA-SIP-VOIP-Phone-Adapter-2-Port-UNLOCKED_W0QQitemZ130305904604QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item1e56d64fdc&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1234|293%3A1|294%3A50 (But be careful with ebay PAP2's as listed above. High rate of defects. As reported by many on DSL Reports (http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Adslreports.com+hong+kong+pap2&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t))
If you've never heard of gizmo5, they allow unlimited incoming calls. Now this is where Google Voice steps in and the magic happens, whenever you want to call someone via GV, it requires it to call your phone, and then use GV to call out - so basically every call incoming and outgoing, is really incoming. Gizmo5 just made it 100 times easier with this integration and now no callin is required to dial out.
------
see screenshot for gizmo account page w/the google voice option
-----
Also there is an Error in regards to "landline" description for the ATA. I believe the person means your POTS phones with the FXS port. FXO is to connect to the CO landline. The Linksys SPA-3102 will do this. $69.98 at Amazon. This way you can still have your Telco line come into the device for everyone that has your landline number, and call route out VoIP for outgoing Calls

For iPhone Users:
Be sure NOT to use Nimbuzz if using iphone. It is not able to verify your GV account link to gizmo since you cannot dial the code GV gives you (there is no dialpad). Also, I was unable to call out using Nimbuzz - dialing out did nothing other than it pretending to call out. I was able to receive incoming calls though.
Siphon from Cydia worked flawlessly.
Fring for iPhone seems to work also, and has Push notifications so that the app doesn't have to be open for you to receive a call.

Gizmo + Gizmo + PAP2NA + Google Voice = Free Phone Service
Credits To techdodo
"I got it working again. It still works exactly the same way, to the end user, as it did before, but my configuration is a little different now. I have an extra step here that I don’t think should be necessary, but it still works, still doesn’t cost anything, so I am fine with it.
I couldn’t get the PAP2-NA to connect to Google Voice directly anymore, but I could still do it with the Gizmo Client. I think if I can do it with one, I should be able to do it with the other, but since I couldn’t I added a second Gizmo account to the equation.
I use the first Gizmo account to forward incoming SIP calls to my Google Voice number. I think any SIP account should do, but I already had a second Gizmo account, so I just used that.
I use the Second Gizmo account to call the first Gizmo account and to receive incoming calls from my Google Voice number. This is the account I have set up in the PAP2-NA. The first Gizmo account is not set up in the PAP2, it just exists for its forwarding duties.
Neither Gizmo account needs to be funded for this to work and the end result is free incoming calls, I would suppose anywhere in the world, and free outgoing calls to any US number.
Here is how to set it up.
On the first Gizmo project account, all you have to do is create an account and log into it at Gizmoproject.com. Then, set it up to forward to your Google Voice number. Once you log in it is pretty self explanatory, just select the SIP option and for the number use yourgv#@216.239.37.15:5061
When you call the SIP number of the Gizmo Project account, it will forward to the Google Voice account using SIP. SIP forwards in Gizmo Project are free of charge, so it costs nothing for the account and nothing for the call. SIP calls are free, so the call from the second account setup on the ATA is free too.
Now you need to set up your second Gizmo Project account in your pap2-NA. There are lots of guides on how to do this, it is just a standard setup. Basically,
1) Set your proxy to proxy01.sipphone.com
2) Set your Userid to your Gizmo Project number 1747*******
3) Set your password
4) I put my Google Voice number as my Display Name
I don’t think I really changed anything else.
Lastly, on the User1 Tab in the Speed Dial 2 field, I entered the SIP number of the first Gizmo account I set up.
1747Gizmosip1#
Save your settings.
Now you need to set up Google voice. Log in to your Google Voice account at »www.google.com/voice (http://slickdeals.net/?sdtid=1471803&u2=http://www.google.com/voice) [google.com (http://slickdeals.net/?sdtid=1471803&u2=http://www.google.com/voice)]
First, disable call screening. Select settings
Under the general tab, deselect the enable screening checkbox. What this does is make your incoming calls work like the normally would. When someone calls your Google Voice number, you just answer the phone.
Next, you need to make sure your Google Voice number is forwarded to the second Gizmo Project account.
Select the phone tab. Make an entry for your Gizmo Project account. The type will be Gizmo and the number will be 1747Gizmosip2#.
That’s it, you are all done.
Make sure your phone is plugged into your ATA.
Pick up your phone and listen for a dial tone.
dial 2# from your phone’s handset.
(This places a SIP call from The second Gizmo Project account to the first account, then the first account forwards that call to Google Voice via SIP. If anyone figures out how to do this directly from the ATA, let me know. I think it must be a configuration issue.)
When you hear ringing, hit *
Now you are in your Google Voice account
Enter your four digit security PIN
Press 2 to make a call
Enter the phone number you want to call followed by #
Wait for the person you called to answer. You just made a free call.
For free incoming calls, you don’t have to do anything. Whenever anyone calls your Google Voice number, the phone plugged into the ATA will ring. Just answer it."

Gizmo + Gizmo + PAP2NA + Google Voice = Free Phone Service
Long, hard tutorial
Pretty sure the new addition of GV into gizmo (which was done in the past few days) gets rid of the need for any of that.
Just checked out the gizmo5 configuration page, it now has a Google Voice section where you can input your GV username and password. What this does is when you setup a VoIP application or phone with your Gizmo5 login information (make SURE you are using the 10+1 digit gizmo5 phone number to login, not the gizmo5 username), you get free outgoing calling! No more using a separate application or the web to call your gizmo5 number first with your GV #. Just pick a contact and call away. Caller ID shows your GV #, and when people call it back, it should ring your gizmo5 (make sure you add it to the GV setup page).

Let me ask, I need an incoming number to forward to Skype. I currently have a number from IPKall forwarding to Gizmo. The problem is it treats it as an OpenSky call. The call quality is pretty horrible, and the call cuts off in 3 to 5 minutes. I also can't seem to figure out how to set the voicemail correctly. Is this a viable alternative to that setup? I just need incoming calls to work, with some semblence of voicemail.

I live in Sacramento, CA and my wifes parents live in Melbourne, Australia.
I have a google voice account, is there any way to have them call a number
that rings down here without them having to pay international rates, or vice-versa
we call them without international rates? We drop like $50 a month on long distance
calls. Thank you ahead of time!
Use skype, or some other voip. This would probably work too.

to verify my gizmo number in google voice though it wants to call it, how do I get around this?
add your gizmo5 # to GV, and open up either the gizmo5 application or your SIP\voip software\hardware and get ready for the call.
Sorry, I cannot get this part. When you say "SIP\Voip Device\application", what're they?
either download the gizmo5 software or use your own SIP\VOIP software\hardware (Im using the siphon app on the iPhone)
im on the same boat as most ppl here...
i have a GV# any step by step directions that are dummy proof?
1) Login to your gizmo5 account page
2) enter your GV username and password
3) Go to your SIP\Voip Device\application and enter the following:
-Username: your 10+1 digit Gizmo5 number found on your Gizmo account page
-Password: enter your password
-Server: proxy01.sipphone.com
4) Login to GV and add your Gizmo5 number and verify it - pick up the call when you receive it and enter the verification code
DONE - free, easy to use outgoing and incoming calls with your GV number! Everything works great, when you call out, it shows your GV #, and when ppl call your GV #, it should ring your gizmo5 account!
I tested this with Siphon (iPhone app, from Cydia - free, allows calls over 3g\edge) and was able to make outgoing calls right from the VoIP app - before I had to open GVMobile (separate app to call your Gizmo number first before placing the outgoing call), otherwise it would state "you have no gizmo5 outgoing credit, etc".
i signed up and it's in demo mode. Asks me to buy credit. how is it free/
Its 100% free incoming calls

Why not buy them a MagicJack if they absolutely need to call USA numbers? Otherwise, you could use a service like Skype or Google Chat (with voice). I've used MagicJack since January and I'd say it works well. I'm going to take it with me when I move overseas so that people can call me.

If you want something that works, just by a -NA version from eBay of the PAP2/PAP2T. -NA is a hacked version that is not tied to any provider. Make sure the seller is reliable. I hacked one but it was more time than I would have wanted to spend on it - although a great learning experience.
Linksys/Sipura SPA-3102, 2102 are excellent and reliable.
D-Link models are crappy and unreliable, but can work (I have a VTA ex-Vonage model myself). The VWR includes a wireless router also, but again, very bad firmware and poor reliability.
There are others too, but again if you prefer inexpensive, you should be able to get one of the above for $50 or so.

download backgrounder from cydia, then hold down home button when you are in siphon and it will put it in the background, you can receive calls no problem even when your phone is asleep - make sure you turn on voice over 3g\edge in the siphon settings

When I use Gizmo5 to place an outgoing call to my GV number, all I get is continuous ringing. Nothing picks up. My cell phone which is also connected to my GV number can get a response just fine from GV when I place an outgoing call to it. So why doesn't my gizmo5 application get a response? I do have a GV #
Log in to Gizmo5
Make note of your 1747... number
In the Google voice section enter your GV email address and password and save.
If you have an ATA: Change user settings to have your 1747.. number as the user id and enter your Gizmo password in the password part. The sip server should be the Gizmo5 sip server I think: proxy01.sipphone.com:5060
If you are having difficulty hearing audio when receiving calls you might want to use STUN server: stun01.sipphone.com:3478
Plug in your ATA
Log in to your GV account
In the settings --phone section enter your Gizmo5 1747... number you made note of above
Select Gizmo from the drop down box and save (This for incoming)
After verifying you will be able to answer using the ATA.
And you should be all set now to make outgoing calls and receive incoming too. If you are still having problems IM me and I'll give you more detailed instructions.

GV and Gizmo together is definitely great, but it's not new. You could always set up Google Voice with Gizmo simply by getting your V number from your Gizmo profile. It's preferable to Skype which 1) charges you for a number to forward GV to (30 to 60 bucks a year), and 2) Charges for the incoming calls.

You can not dial your 1747.. number directly from your phone. This is a Gizmo5 sip number not a DID number. That's where GV comes in. GV is a DID number that you can call from any regular phone. You use Google voice to forward to Gizmo5.

PAP2T-NA from ebay. The ones from Hong Kong as in the wiki has a high rate of failure. Checkout DSL Reports, there are many threads about it.
I suggest the SPA-3102 from Linksys (Sipura) for a bit more. $69.98 at Amazon, it has both FXS and FXO. Which means if you have a landline you can setup call routing from your landline too.

Unfortunately, the Moto adapters are locked to Vonage, and virtually impossible to unlock and reuse. The general consensus at last check is not to bother, it's not worth the effort.

I also need help verifying the Gizmo5 number. I'm using a G1 and the SIPDroid app. I followed these instructions:
1) Login to your gizmo5 account page
2) enter your GV username and password
3) Go to your SIP\Voip Device\application and enter the following:
-Username: your 10+1 digit Gizmo5 number found on your Gizmo account page
-Password: enter your password
-Server: proxy01.sipphone.com
4) Login to GV and add your Gizmo5 number and verify it
I've logged in to GV and added the number but how do I verify it? That is, when I click verify, where do I go or what do I do to answer the call? My G1 doesn't ring. In spite of that, when I make outgoing calls with Wifi enabled and the SIPDroid app running (and Google Voice turned off), it works (my number shows up as my GV #).

So remove the :5060 from the SIP server. And add 5060 without the ":" in the SIP input signaling port if you have one. I know you are new, but learn to read the wiki. To get full advantage of Gizmo5 and GV, you need to download sipdroid, which can be found at sipdroid.org. Course, if you learn to read the wiki, you would not need to ask these questions. I will however just past the instructions here..
3) Go to your SIPVoip Device application and enter the following:
-Username: your 10+1 digit Gizmo5 number found on your Gizmo account page
-Password: enter your password
-Server: proxy01.sipphone.com (both "Proxy" and "Outbound proxy" for some)
This allows all outgoing and incoming calls to use 3G or Edge and use your GV number. 0 minutes are used.

How do you make outgoing calls from your PC using Gizmo5/GV? I understand how receiving calls work.
You signup for a GV invite and wait.
Sign up for Gizmo5 (Make note of teh 1747.. number)
When you get the Google invite and you signup you will get to choose a phone number.
In the Google account info after you add a main phone number you can add your Gizmo 1747... number to the phones on the phone settings page and use Gizmo5 from the type of phone drop down box. After you do that you have to be logged in to G5 and GV will call you to verify (this is for incoming)
On Gizmo5 setting page there is a section for Google voice, add your GV email address and password and choose make calls to us (or something like that) radio button.
Save.
Now you will have both unlimited Incoming/Outgoing calls to the USA for free.

I own a Linksys PAP2 from Vonage (like 4 years ago). Are there clear instructions somewhere that explain how to unlock and use with GV and Gizmo? I know I looked a couple years ago and it was fairly complicated.
Thanks in advance.
try this, I was able to unlock it just few weeks back. takes a while to understand the steps but they sure work.

In your Google voice setup page Settings/General adjust Call Screening: either disable it all together or choose Screen only blocked callers.

What program do you use to call out after setting it all up on the computer?
If I try to use Gizmo5 website to call out with the computer it asks to deposit money.
This is awesome. I tried out Skype but soon cancelled my $2.99 unlimited outbound to landlines when I found out that Skype doesn't allow for authentication of Google Voice numbers for their Caller ID.

Can this be used for free fax in US?
I just hooked up my panasonic fax machine and was able to send a fax to efax (I even had my innomedia set to 'no' for faxes, and I don't think gv 'supports' them). I wasn't able to send an efax back to my panasonic even though efax said it was 'sent'. There is the voice prompt on incoming calls that can be a problem.

Yes you can use a normal phone, but you have to first "unlock" your vonage router and point it to Gizmo instead of Vonage. Instructions are in the wiki for what to type in.

Question for the technically savvy forum members:
is there anyway to get this to work on all phones within the house to replace a landline? Using a SIP / ATA adapter only gives access to one phone in the house. That's fine for an apartment but for a house with 3 floor including a basement something like the vonage ATA / SIP would be needed. The only other solution I can think of is those cordless phones with multi-stations where the phone line goes into only one base station and then you have charging cradles sitting around the house. Any other solutions people using to replace their landline with this "free". I've been trying to get rid of the landline in my parents house for the longest time. They've got minutes on our family plan but the landline does come in handy for those lengthy calls they receive from time to time that would throw me over the 1000 family plan minutes a few times a year. Ideas?

yah, you would need to unplug the main phone going INTO the apartment, and then plug the ATA device into a phone jack in the wall. Then, you would just use the rest of the phone jacks in the house like you normally would

Anything wrong with cordless phones?
You could split out the line from the ATA to the wall, but the ATA would have to power the REN for all the phones.

You can Split the FXS port on the ATA to distribute amongst your 3 phones. If you have a central DEMARC at your house, just cut and end off an RJ11 cord and plug the jack end in the ATA, the barewire side into the DEMARC block.

Good deals would be to pickup former Vonage.. etc ATAs. Make sure the one you get can be unlocked. Look on ebay/craigslist. Otherwise Grandstream HT-286's are pretty cheap and a decent ATA. The Sipura now Linksys ATAs are really good if you can find a deal on them.

you can't call your gizmo number.
setup your SIP/Voip Device or cell application
-Username: your 10+1 digit Gizmo5 number found on your Gizmo account page
-Password: enter your password
-Server: proxy01.sipphone.com (outbound proxy the same)
set your gv number forwarding to your gizmo number:
1. Sign in to Google Voice.
2. Go to the Settings link at the top right of the page.
3. Click the Add/Edit Number link right above your phones, to the right of the page.
4. Click the Phones tab.
5. Click Add a new number.
6. Select Gizmo in the Phone Type drop-down menu.
7. Enter your SIP number without 1.
8. Enter a name for that phone, if you want.
9. Click Save.
go to your gizmo online account and set up your gv email address and password.

That's fine. 911 is free on their cell phone and Verizon has great coverage in our area. As a slickdealer, it pains me that every month I see a $30 phone bill with ONLY 3-10 calls made on the landline. Of cos, haven't been able to track how many calls come in or how long each of those calls in or out were. It's also difficult to ween my parents off the landline because they've had that number of over 25+ year and everyone they know has that number. Now if the day comes when GV or Gizmo can port the number over, it'll be a done deal for me.

Goez Shopping (http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/goezshopping_W0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQ_ipgZ)continually has the best pricing that I see around. They ship from Hong Kong so it can take a week or two to deliver. The Cisco Spa2100 can go right in line between your modem and computer (has ethernet in and out) or the pap2t is good if you have a router. They are also giving 8% back if you search for "pap2t" or "spa-2100" through Bing. Alternatively 888voip usually has good prices.

Yep, just got mine working same thing, I dial the number and then the phone beeps at me that there is a incoming call. so I switch over and it rings the phone I called. I'm guessing that's the way it's supposed to work. It would be better if the call just dialed like normal, but for free I can live with it :)

Flawless. *burns MagicJack*. I was using a PAP2-NA with my MJ credentials until they blocked it back in June. This works wonderfully with the PAP2 and my custom dialing plan. For those still confused, this is completely free minus whatever a good ATA costs you. An ATA is an analog telephone adapter such as the Linksys PAP2-NA I mentioned. You plug it into your internet connection probably via a router, and its got a telephone jack on it for your home phone. You access the configuration page for the PAP2-NA the same way as a Linksys router, using your web browser and going to the IP address. I went to Line 1 in the PAP2 configuration and put in my user (Gizmo5 telephone number starting 1-747) and my Gizmo5 password. I went to http://my.gizmo5.com and enabled GV by entering my google account information. Then I went to my GV account and went to "Phones" and added the Gizmo number starting with 1-747. It wanted to confirm and my home phone rang since the PAP2 was already configured. Once I confirmed the phone it has worked flawlessly. If you are confused about where to get your Gizmo5 number, just login to my.gizmo5.com and search the page for 747.

I got the incoming setup working i.e. when someone calls my GV #, it comes to my Gizmo5# i.e. ATA device but when I try outgoing, the lady-bot says "... you must buy Gizmo5 credit..." blah blah
Is it because, may be, my GV a/c is not successfully configured in Gizmo5 as mentioned above?
any help...???
TIA
EDIT:
Looks like something is wrong with my primary GV account. It doesn't work in Gizmo5 page. When I configured my another GV a/c in Gizmo5 a/c, it worked great...!!!
thanks a ton for the simple steps and process...:)

EDIT
Guys i figured it out just do this
1. go into your gizmo account page
2. make sure you didn't choose forwarding to your GV. If you did, change it back
this worked for me and I started receiving calls on gizmo
There are idiots in the world who try to make things more complicated than they have to be in order to try and sound intelligent. We have a couple in this thread.
