diablos991
08-03-2009, 04:34 PM
It is not a contest. If you read the rules, so long as your account is valid and you complete the course; you get one. They begin shipping in October.

When I did it there were 2 options, one was a contest for the program and a mouse.
The other was just a "if you complete the course between day XX and day XX you get a free software"

I'm curious as to what problems you have with Office 2007 and what alternative you recommend.

My problems with Office 2007 is that it's a crappy product. It was created solely for the purpose of making money. Most of it's 'enhancements' and 'upgrades' are nothing more than user environment changes that make using the thing complex and aggravating. Even people who are Office XP/2003 experts get confused.
Let me say that, yes, there are some nice new features in Excel. A couple new functions that I wasn't able to do in 2003 (countifs). HOWEVER, they could have added all that stuff as a service pack, or maybe a small update they could even charge for. But no, they had to roll out a new version to get some money.
95% of the people who use Office have no need for 95% of the features it has. Most just want a simple word processor and maybe a spread sheet and/or presentation program. Access is a joke, so I'm not even going to address that. In any case, Microsoft knows that Office XP/2003 is more then sufficient for all of these people. Hell, there are still people using MS Works from the early 90s if all they need is a word processor. But this isn't good for business. How can you improve a product that needs no improvements? You take the product you already have, throw a couple new things in it, then repackage it in the most non-intuitive interface the world has ever seen. And on top of that, let's change the entire file format system to .docx, etc. so we can make it even more incompatible with all future, and superior, versions. Not only can they make money on this crap software now, but they can also make millions more selling books to people that will teach them, not how to do things in Office 2007, but how to find all the stuff in 2007 that they used to know how to do in the previous versions.

So to answer your question, I use Office 2003.

diablos991
08-08-2009, 11:29 AM
I use both 2003 and 2007 on a daily basis in the workplace. (I write for a living and am a university student)

I enjoy 2007 MUCH more than 2003. Then again, I am young and not scared of changing to a new style of program either. I guess the middle aged and older folk tend to be resistant to change.

It had a slight learning curve due to the new ribbon system; however, anybody with a damn brain can figure out where something is in 2007. If you can't find it a quick google search will teach you where it is at. Hell, they even have a handy thing called a help file if you get stuck. Either way, it is easy to learn and get used to and in the end it is more user friendly and all around more pleasant to use IMO.

It looks as though many of you are selecting the wrong thing. On the front page, there is a survey to "win" a copy of MS Office (or some hardware). This is NOT a guaranteed deal. It's a drawing.

For a guaranteed copy, you want to: click "Contests" on the top. Select the MS Office contest, it will bring you to the page where you take the course, you need to pass a quiz at the end and get an 80% or higher.

They also included a letter that said I participated in their back to school sweepstakes and have won the included item. I don't know why it said I entered their sweepstakes, as I only took the test. I just figured they sent the letter out to everyone who did the test, but maybe I'm wrong?

They never stated the full details. It said details to come on the 1st. So now we know the first 3k get it early, which I assume probably did it yesterday. After the 3k, the rest will receive it at the launch (October 22). I'm am still trying to decide if the boxed NFR copy is worth the $10.

For those having problems, Firefox 3.5 is working perfectly fine for me. Been using the site for a long time and have never had problems with firefox.

Expert rank only? Ugh. Do you think it's worth spending my time to get another 1000 points or do you think they've been sold out already? Worst case, I just get my shipped at the same time as the release date, right?

Gettting the extra 1000 is easy. Honestly you don't have to do much once you get expert, but you do have to maintain it. You could probably google expertzone codes (there are some in newsletters and other things) that would easily get you the 1000 points. The problem is they usually make you wait until they rank you up. Details for that is in your account menu.

Depending when exactly they posted the windows 7 offer, the 3000 might be gone already. They do state if you finish it after the first 3000 it will be shipped so you get it at launch.

Congratulations on becoming a Windows Expert! Please note: After placing your order, you will receive a request for proof of employment via mail.

I was going to order Windows 7, finished all the lessons, then... Do you think they'll actually ask?

Before you checkout with the order for Windows 7, there is a note that says that Microsoft will ask for proof of employment by mail. They have not done this before on other offers. Are they actually doing this now?

Anyways, it's free, so who's to complain :D

120 GB Hard Drive
User Level Points Cash Required
Newbie 3500 Points $100.00
Veteran 3250 Points $85.00

Your paystub has to be somewhat recent (usually it's within the last 30 days but I can't remember if the form specifies). The form also asks for your store number and manager's name, as well as the phone number.

They didn't verify employment with the Office 2008 for Mac promo so maybe they won't this time.

http://expertzone.microsoft.com/Home.aspx

Successfully pass the "Recommending Office 2007" course between July 16 and Sept 30, 2009 to receive one (1) copy of Microsoft Office 2007 Standard, one (1) copy per registered user. Shipment of software will begin October 1, 2009. Please note that it is the responsibility of registered user to maintain an up-to-date and accurate profile in order for Microsoft to contact you.

If they do try verifying your employment, (and they randomly do) if you are not employed at an eligible business, you will get a bill for the products that you ordered.

Just got mine!!! Fedex delivered this morning. From tracking it says Microsoft sent it up on Oct 21, 2009 from AUBURN, WA. So you might want to check transit maps on Fedex Ground and see when yours will come.

Was there an actual reference to use? I am in Michigan and like I posted earlier, I took the test on 8/26 and still no sign of it. If someone could check the label, and post the reference, I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

yours will most likely come tomorrow (27 oct)

maybe this will help....
http://www.fedex.com/grd/maps/MapEntry.do

origin zip code is 98001 and according to the ground map, yours will come after 4 business days. I'm in Utah, and I got it in 3 business days (same as what map shows).

Since you said you are in Michigan, the map says 4 business days which is tomorrow (27 oct).

Could they be sending them out by last name alphabetically? That would explain why I haven't received mine yet.

Def not bc then I would have gotten mine in the very beginning. It has to be going by the date of the test completion, but it looks like they're sending them out in batches.

I passed the test on 8/27 and still have not received Office 2007.

I am a bit worried because I know at least on one occasion, there was a newspaper outside my front door in the morning, but I was in a hurry to leave so I didn't pick it up, and when I came home in the evening, it was gone. I am afraid I might have some dishonest neighbors who see packages left on my doorstep as freebies for them. That's why I am terrified of ordering something expensive online, because I work all day and no one would be home to answer the door, and so if it's left by the front door, it could become someone else's free gift.

do this:

you can call Fedex 1-800 number and ask if there is any packages that were sent to you (just give them the name and address on the package). If there is a package sent to you, just tell Fedex to hold at location (at their warehouse, or at a fedex authorized retailer) and you can pick it up from them at your convience.

Why dont you put a sign outside your door and let the delivery people know that if nobody answers the door, then deliver it at the rental office or even better, tell em that you would pick it up. That way your stuff is safe. Thats what I do normally.

I suggest you get a PO box- It costs some money, but you will have a safe place to store your mail. You could also look into installing a mail slot in or near your garage door.

My concern is more about delivery being mis routed. I had UPS drop a amazon box on my door step designated for a home several blocks away. USPS dropped mail for another address in my box too. I know this is slightly off topic, but keep this in mind if your package does not show up.

That is a good idea but it doesn't work for Fedex and UPS packages.
