In The Land of the Rising Sun, Sony has a hit with the PS3 Slim. A really, really big one.

In its first three days on sale, the newly redesigned console sold 150,252 units. Not bad for a platform that was originally released in November 2006! What's more, this is the biggest weekly sales figures for the PS3 console. Because of shortage issues at launch, only* 88,000 PS3s were sold in its first two days on the market. (*only is a relative term here!)

Just think how the console could have done if launch conditions were more ideal.

According to Famitsu publisher Enterbrain, the PS3 (Slim and original) sold 150,832 units combined during the period from August 31 to September 6. The new life-to-date sales figures for the PS3 in Japan are 3,431,964 units as of September 6.

It's not just Japan that is going bonkers over the PS3 Slim. The United Kingdom is going bonkers, too. PS3 sales are up over a thousand percent, (http://www.vg247.com/2009/09/07/uk-ps3-sales-explode-1000-on-slims-release/) apparently!

Sales tracker ChartTrack hasn't revealed specific numbers, but told game site MCV: "The sales increase is very impressive, making the PS3 the top selling hardware in Week 36. The Xbox 360, Wii and DS Lite all sold around the same amount last week – PS3 Slim outsold each of them by a ratio of three-to-one."

ChartTrack is not certain how long this upswing in sales will last. Enjoy it while lasts, make hay and all that jazz. And hey, David Jason!

If this is true than thats pretty impressive though I'm sure everyone and their dog expected the PS3's sales to be up a lot since everyday I'd see 2 or 3 people on slickdeals saying "when they price drop I'll buy"

Sony with a financially sound move...? Amazed - pleasantly so. Still, there's a part of me that just can't wait to see how they'll fcuk the endgame up on this one...

But is the increase in sales because of the slim? Or is it the price drop?

Both? No doubt both had an impact on sales. The price drop of course being more influential.

LOL :lmao:

Also this is quite obviously because of the price cut. I honestly doubt the PS3 slim would outsell the PS3 phat if both were in production at the same $400 price point.

Both the Slim and the 80gb sre 299 right now and the Slim is selling much better. How do you explain that? If priced the same people will no doubt gravitate to a newer model, plus prefer smaller electronics if given a choice.

I'd guess its the bigger hard-drive. The phat looks alot better imo.

I doubt the mainstream consumer factors the HDD size as much as us gamers do. Hell some gamers here can't even find enough reason to fill up a 120GB HDD.

What you have to ask yourself is whether sales would be up 1000% if no Slim was announced, just a price drop. Would the 80GB PS3 be the top selling video game product at Amazon for weeks straight? Would people wait in hugh lines in Japan for just a price drop? Would 150,000 PS3's be sold in 3 days if it were just the Phat at $299? I doubt it. t'd be up significantly no doubt but it's the combination of the Slim and the price drop is what is making the sales jump this high. Keep in mind that the announcement of the Slim created a ton of hype that was close to the hype of a new console launch even. There's no way in hell a price drop alone would have created this much hype, or would have been as good a marketing opportunity for Sony. Ignoring the impact the Slim has had on these sales figures would be wrong.

Yeah I guess I don't know how I feel about this. Lets have Sony go back in time and drop price and see if the same effect exists otherwise both our arguments will go absolutely no where.

Did you buy the PS3 slim or the Phat? Did you have a choice between slim/phat at the store you went too?

Did you buy the PS3 slim for any specific reason?

I'm another person that bought the Slim on the day of the drop.

To preemptively answer your questions:

I bought the Slim. Of course I had the choice of the Fat, at pretty much any store and online. Many stores were selling the Fat at the same $299, plus some goodies like games or accessories to sweeten the deal. I wasn't interested.

I bought the Slim for the simple fact that it's newer technology, with a bigger hard drive, a die shrink and improved chip yields. Rumor has it that they were able to enable the last SPE, which was disabled in prior iterations due to... you guessed it, yield issues. (See AMD Phenom X3). All this gobbledygook simply means that the Slim is a more efficient and refined version of an older product. The decreased power consumption is good in theory (I doubt it really makes a big difference in your utility bills), but the more practical benefits are that it's putting out less heat (better unit longevity?) and the system fan needs to be less active. That means less noise, less heat going into your room, and lint building up in your unit at a slower rate.

(Not coincidentally, this is why I build my own PCs to be power-efficient, unless there was some reason to do otherwise.)

There was no way I'd consider the current 80/160gb Fat. The ability to install an alternate operating system had zero appeal to me. If I wanted to run Linux, I'd run it on my computer and do many more things than I could with a PS3-Linux box. The only people that feature is actually useful for is academic researchers, where they build inexpensive distributed computing networks to run physics/molecular simulations on.

Admittedly, I did consider the early, SACD-capable Fat. Even though it's a dying medium, I have a small collection of SACDs still sitting at my parents' place. But once I learned that it couldn't do DSD, that took a lot of the wind out of that one. (I did not care that those were backwards-compatible to the PS2 either, as I still have a PS2 that I like just fine.) Then I found out that none of the Fats could bitstream to a receiver/amp, and that the Slim could. That was pretty much the nail-in-the-coffin for my consideration of the Fat, as the PS3 was definitely going to be my Blu-Ray player and part of my HT setup.

**********************************

Look, guys... technology progresses and it's rare that it takes a step backwards when a new product replaces an old one, esp. in the computing field. Stop feeling the need to justify your PS3 Fat. Realize that you had the joy of enjoying it for the last few years, while those of us holding out for a new version had no PS3 to play with for all that time! That is your advantage.

i'll be honest, if the slim and the fat were both 120gb HDs and released at the same time, im sure the sales numbers would be similar at the 300 dollar price point.

Fact is bestbuy's basically out of the fat PS3s, no matter what majority of people buy their shit from BB, so it makes sense the slims are higher sale
I doubt its from the slim design as much as availability of the console, if you only got new slims around and no fat ones, people'll buy the slim.

So do you guys think this is just a temporary spike or is it going to be a sustained rate of sale?

Yeah, most people who walk into a retail shop probably don't care about the specifics as much as I do. It's probably the 120gb hard drive. The "newness" of the Slim might appeal to some, but really... there is very little actual difference (aside from aesthetics) that consumers might choose one over the other for.

Now, had they released the silver PS3 Slim...

I'm not trying to "justify" my purchase or anything else. I'm not bitching, moaning, or groaning.

If I were to buy a PS3 right now (if I didn't have one), I would probably buy the PS3 Slim for the 120 GB hard drive and the newness factor.

This is also assuming that I hadn't owned my PS3 Phat for over a year and still have 40GB of space (with disposable space remaining) even though I use my PS3 regularly and have many games/movies/music stored on it. I probably wouldn't have considered the 120GB a selling point knowing this.

I'm very comfortable with my PS3 Phat. It's set up just the way I like. Whether its menial or not, I like my touch-sensitive buttons. I enjoy the sleek shiny finish over the matte finish. I enjoy many things about my PS3 Phat that really mean nothing in the scheme of things to most people.

I was saying that I didn't think that the PS3 Slim's new features/bigger hard drive/new design were selling consoles but rather the new price point.

I can almost guarantee that out of these sales a majority of them have been PS3 Slims but not because of the additional features but rather the better availability. The reason why I think the PS3 has sold so much better recently is the newer price point, not because the PS3 Slim was released.

a) Ugly

or

b) Pretty Ugly
