I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but I thought you all might appreciate it.
Usually, with Verizon at least, dialing information (411) costs $1.25. I recently discovered a service called 411 Metro (there are others, but 411 metro has been good so far) which is free directory assistance as long as you listen to like literally a 10-second advertisement.
The number is 1-800-411-6387 (800-411-METRO). Give it a try! :woot:
:prop: :biker:
I *HAVE* to try this! Verizon charges $1.49 per 411 call!

No, it's not misleading. The title says you won't pay for a 411 call. In other words, you wouldn't pay more for making a 411 call than you would any other call. In any case, if you have unlimited N&W minutes, then make your free 411 calls then. Otherwise, if during the weekday, usually 411 calls don't last too long - maybe 2 mins. max.

LOL that's one serious lesson. Hopefully the cops didn't press false 911 charges on her. I always wondered why the creator(s) of 911 and 411 made them so similar. Bad move, IMO.

This works from every phone, land or cell.

To find a phone number without getting the typical directory assistance charges, dial
1-800-FREE-411 from your land line or cell phone. You'll be able to get the number for free.
I've used this many times. It's pretty much automated, but if their computer system doesn't understand the name you're asking for it will forward you to a live person. It's pretty slick.
Here's a link to more info: http://www.free411.com/index.php
You may have to listen to a short 10 second ad while they search for your number--see links under "what's new" (lower left corner) on their site.

Google is offering a 411 service (and no, this isn't another April Fool's day joke).
----------------
Google Voice Local Search is Google’s experimental service to make local-business search accessible over the phone.
To try this service, just dial 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411) from any phone.
Using this service, you can:
* search for a local business by name or category.
You can say "Giovanni's Pizzeria" or just "pizza".
* get connected to the business, free of charge.
* get the details by SMS if you’re using a mobile phone.
Just say "text message".
And it's free. Google doesn’t charge you a thing for the call or for connecting you to the business. Regular phone charges may apply, based on your telephone service provider.
Note: Google Voice Local Search is still in its experimental stage. It may not be available at all times and may not work for all users. We’re fine-tuning the service to get better at recognizing your requests. It’s currently only available in English, in the US, for US business listings.

They offer a similar service for cell phone (Verizon at least), and have for awhile now. Send a text message to GOOGL (46645) with either a business name or category, and your zip code (ex. pizza 61953). It will send you a text message back with results. It only charges you the rate of a standard text message. (Sometimes you get multiple messages back from them depending on what you search)

Goog-411 can be accessed by dialing 1-800-GOOG-411. The product is completely automated and there is no way to talk to a human for additional or clarifying information. You tell it your city and state, and then ask for a specific business or business category. In my tests the product was excellent. Although the voice recognition was only working at about 70% efficiency, I just said “back” and retried when it didn’t understand what I said. Results are spoken back or text messaged back to you, and you are automatically put through to the phone number requested.

Google has recently released a free 411. For those of you that don't know what that is, it is a free telephone number you call to find out addresses/telephone numbers of businesses. It starts off by asking you your city and state, then it asks you what business you want to call. If there is more than one in the area, it will give you the top 8 results. Once you say which one you want, they will either connect you with them, or you can ask for details to find out their address. This works great for calling for pizza without a phone book. You don't even have to know the business name, you could just say pizza, and it would list off the places that sell pizza. The voice recognition has worked every time for me, and it has found every business I asked for. Check it out.

just tested it to call my office and the voice recognition worked perfect. I think I may put this in an email and send to all our employees. We have a huge 411 problem in our MD office. The first month with integrated access we eliminated our long distance bill but they racked up $300 in 411 calls which is ridiculous especially when everyone has a computer in front of them with sites such as switchboard.com.

Not sure. It's not just for cell phone number. I do know that I'm hooked up in Google (have GMAIL, my own Google Splashpage, use GoogleSuggest, etc.) and I do not get any Google SPAM. I do know this for certain, because I don't use a "regular" name in my Google data, so anything coming to me from them would be obvious.
I know they take heat for their cookies, but from my direct perspective, SPAM isn't an issue.

I have been using the text message version for 6 months in NYC and I have saved a ton. Free is better than $1.49 for a 411 call. I have never had a problem and it is always dead on for what I use it for. I hope this helped everyone.

Almost everyone in the blackberry community knows about this already, but for those that do not:
Beyond411 (formerly known as berry411)
http://thebogles.com/blog/projects/berry411/
This great application lets you search for weather, stock quotes, movie listings, flight arrival/departure times, jobs, directions, reverse phone lookups, sports scores, etc. If you're a blackberry user you need this application!
Also, for the windows mobile converts, there is rudimentary version of this that was created by the developers of pocket informant called Bogle411. That can be found here:

I have been using the text message option for a couple years. You can use it as a google search (not just 411) and get answers back right away. For example, say you wanted to know how many tablespoons are in a cup or the address for the restaturant or anything random. Send a text to GOOGL and the answer comes back within a minute or so (if not quicker). Its great. Also as a suggestion, the results have been better for me when looking for a phone number or address if I send the city along with the name or description.

Nice to have an ad-free alternative to Free 411. However, when I sampled the service, I found the voice spoke in very clipped syllables and the information was almost unintelligible. I'm hoping this will improve as the beta matures. Also, the service does not provide residential information (yet?) so until then Free 411 will still hold a slot on my speed dialer.

Cool, it is faster than free 411. I didn't have to listen to McD dollar menu ads or Flamingo Resorts ads. I just added it to my speed dial. I like that it will autoconnect you, too. Free 411 would only do that for one of their sponsors.

I've used this for a while. I use the text version to GOOGL (46645) from my cell phone all the time. It is pretty reliable for businesses, but only so so for residential listings. I find it's fastest to text the business name and then the zip code (or a zip code you know to be nearby if you don't know the exact zip).
That way you are texting "Chipotle 55401" for example rather than typing out the whole city name, and if the location you are looking for is actually in 55402 or 55403 it will still send it to you.
I have never received any spam or solicitation calls or texts from this service.
All the instructions and the commands the program will recognize are at this site.

just tested it to call my office and the voice recognition worked perfect. I think I may put this in an email and send to all our employees. We have a huge 411 problem in our MD office. The first month with integrated access we eliminated our long distance bill but they racked up $300 in 411 calls which is ridiculous especially when everyone has a computer in front of them with sites such as switchboard.com.
if you have a decent pbx or voip in your office you can link the google's number to 411.

You could always do this on google.com . Just search for the business then click call. Put in your phone number and you will be connected free of charge. Although i never used it for this reason. I always just used that feature to prank people. Put in someone elses number and call them from 50 different businesses haha. fun prank. :lmao:

I once won a bet, and used GOOGL to prove it. We were dining at the Wolfgang's Steakhouse in Tribeca (NYC). While most of us ordered steak, two people ordered the Chilean Sea Bass. I proceeded to tell them that Chilean Sea Bass isn't actually a bass but some other fish whose name was kinda ugly, so they changed the name to something sexier, hence the name Chilean Sea Bass was born (I saw this on Food Network). No one believed me, and they insisted that the Chilean Sea Bass was actually a kind of bass. So I made a small bet with one of the guys. He asked the waiter, and the waiter didn't have a definitive answer. So I sent a text to 46645 (GOOGL):
define Chilean Sea Bass
Go here and try it for yourself:

I have cigular for my cell service provider. Everytime I make a 1-800 call. They charge me dearly. I don't remember how much. So make sure when you call from your cell to 800 numbers your cell service provider is not charging you. I believe 800 numbers is another company that cell phone companies have to pay. 1-800-FREE411 has been around for a while as well. You have to listen to a 20 sec. ad I think though. Options are good though in case Goog doesn't work for some reason.
1-800-FREE-411 was nice in the beginning when nobody knew about it, they even connected your phone call for you. But now that people have picked up on it, the best you can do is have them text message you the number you requested... I'm lazy and selfish, sorry.

You can use Google Voice Local Search to make free long distance calls to any business in the US, as long as the business is listed.
Just dial 1-800-GOOG-411 (1-800-466-4411) from any phone, say the city, state and name of the business. Then Google will connect your phone call for free. I just used this from a landline in California to call a business in New York. Worked perfectly! Awesome!
http://labs.google.com/goog411/
Welcome to Google Voice Local Search

You can't use local.live.com while you're driving, and it CAN'T connect your call for free.
And Tell Me is not the same. Tell Me may have more features, but it takes much longer to get to the phone number you want. And Tell Me doesn't connect you for free, it just gives you the phone number. Also Google is cool in that it will send you a text message with the address and phone number so you don't have to write it down if you're driving.
The point of my post is that you can use Google to make free long distance calls using this service. There are obviously many many ways to look up a business phone number if that's all you need.
first google gets a taste of your email, then they want to have records of what your voice sounds like.

Are you joking or paranoid? There is no way they can link a voice to a specific person. They have no idea WHO is using the phone, much different than email.

They'd have to account for shared computers and shared emails, they can account for shared phones too. Reverse lookup and link your call to a name/address and there ya go. 800# are supposed to be able to pull your callerid even through a *67.

Shared emails are rare, and pointless for Google's purposes. Google's just trying to target ads.
I seriously doubt Google is saving voice profiles and trying to match them with certain people. What would be the point of that? If you use this service all Google can know is that someone from a given number requested the info for a certain business. Using Google Voice has fewer consequences for you individually than using gmail or Google.com. The paranoia level of people these days is off the charts.

Wrong: http://mobile.search.live.com/about/

and it CAN'T connect your call for free.
Wrong again, find a business listing on local.live.com and it has an option call for free.
Google added this feature recently, live search had it long back.
Also Google is cool in that it will send you a text message with the address and phone number so you don't have to write it down if you're driving.

Okay I've been using them or a while now and did not realize how much money it has saved me until this past weekend I saw 5 411 calls on my GF's phone bill :(.

One of our favorite new Google features, Goog-411, graduated from Google Labs today. It’s a way of getting directory assistance without paying those outrageous fees associated with traditional 411 services. Simply dial 1-800-GOOG-411 and answer the automated questions to find who or what you are looking for. It’s quite intuitive and the results are spot on almost all of the time. Google’s celebrated the launch with a new website, and (at least around major metropolitan areas) there are ads all over the place.

Also, this works on pay phones for free, connects the call to businesses for free.

I've been using GOOG 411 for a while It's the best. How awesome is it that 411 is no longer a chargeable call for anyone, even pay phones? There go the payphones :) Can you make GOOG 411 a My Fave and just have it connect you to all your calls? Free calls for everyone!!

This community is definitely divided. Either you love to type "repost" or you hate the people who type it.
People who type "repost" are the same people that want to tell other what they can and can't do. IE: "repost"ers are against abortion...etc.
By the way OP, I love the fact that you posted this info, I think it's super helpful.
:)
this is stupid...this needs to be deleted....honestly...its not a deal either...its a freebie...wrong section
It's a hot deal... you don't have to call 411 anymore... so it saves you $$$. I think it's in the right section.

If we dial googfree411, it even asks you if you'd like to be connected to the directory listing.. if we do that is the call going to be still a tollfree number? i.e., no charge?

Yeah. The Microsoft Live Search one seems to work pretty well too. (I just tried it, though I've been using Goog info for a while.) Unfortunately for Microsoft theirs puts a repetative inflection on the end of everything it says.

How is following the official rules (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?sduid=35007&t=40596) threadcrapping?
"Repost!
If you spot a repost, provide a link to the original post.
Use ModAlert to report the post to the moderators."
Not having tons of repostings keeps the site cleaner. Encouraging folks to search before you post is the cardinal rule at every forum I've seen.
Threadcrappng is when you put down the deal posted. Learn the terminology. And lighten up a little.

I have been using 1-800-FREE-411 for about a year and it is awesome - I save $1 everytime I use it from my cell phone I make about twenty 411 calls per month so that is a big savings.
I will have to try GOOG-411 also but 800-FREE-411 has been good to me so far.
:iagree: One important difference; 1-800-FREE411 (1-800-373-3411) works for BOTH business AND residential. I'll not be reprogramming the information memory number in my phones unless/until Google does both too.

i can vouch that this is by far the best 411 and has been for a while since it was in beta/dev
the google team is creative and funny. i tried to use goog411 the other day and somehow got an error and it played a voice "whoops! you came across a nasty bug in the system! we're working hard etc etc" but it made me laugh even tho i didnt get the number i was calling for. called back and said all the same things and it worked so obviously it wasnt me!

I will continue to use 800-FREE-411, as it connects to RESIDENTIAL listings as well. When asked "category" and I said "residential", they state they only cover BUSINESS listings. I do like the fact that they will connect for you, but want residential as well.
Do any of these work for residential numbers??

An awful lot of people, like me, only check this forum and a deal like this is a Slick Deal.
What, you miss out on all the freebies? Noob! You complain that you only check 1 thread, and act like someone else has a problem?
Freebies go into the freebie section, and ones you pay money for go into the hotdeals section. Otherwise, what freebie isn't considered a hotdeal? But too many people are too broke (from too many Slickdeals), and banish themselves to the freebie section, at least until the next payday.
You don't have to go check multiple forums, anyways. Just go into your User Contol Panel, Edit Options, and under, "Exclude Forums from "Get New Posts", select all the non deal threads, like the podium, techsupport, and lounge.
Then when you click 'New Posts" on the forums menu, you get all the deals, not just from 1 thread. It makes Slickdeals, and thus life, a lot easier!

OK So this has been around 7 months but was not previously posted on Slickdeals. I think it's useful for all who are still paying  for your 411 calls.
I haven't tried it yet. I was previously using

About a year ago I posted about FREE 411 but this is a better service.
If someone finds it useful, then good for them. I bet a lot of people do NOT know about this and are paying $1.00 - $2.00 every time they make a 411 call.

I haven't heard of it, and I'm here quite often.
Like I said in the OP I was using "Free 411" but they dont' connect the call.
I dont think it's the same as a freebie, seeing as how many people use 411 a few times a week and this isn't the same thing as a free sample of dish soap or a coupon for a free munchkin.
Plus a lot of people don't look at the freebies board... so it is useful here. There was a LOT of success a year ago in the "FREE411" post and a lot of people had the opportunity to learn about it.
So let people be happy to save some $$.

EXACTLY. While GOOG-411 is a worthwhile service it simply does NOT replace the 411 service from your carrier because it ONLY provides "Yellow Pages" listings, no residential/personal lookups. But hey, it's free. For now.

In case you weren't aware, or don't frequent the Freebie's forum, a deal i like to post every so often is a small freebie to save you from spending $$ on 411 calls.
Use
1-800-GOOG-411 (800-466-4411)
I program it into my phone and it works great!
Another one that works is 1-800-Free-411. The only downside with Free 411 is they do NOT connect your call for you. Also, you have to listen to an advertisement. Goog411 is advertisement free.

Goog 411 will transfer you but won't give the number. If you need the number 1-800-Free-411 will give you the number, it won't transfer and you have to listen to ads. I Use them both depending on the situation
