A whopper of a leak shot across the Internet Tuesday, reporting of a Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) meeting that discussed the possibilities of rereleasing classic Sega games as compilation Blu-ray Discs and downloads of PS2 games on the PS3. While we discussed this trend--and even suggested a few great franchises to pursue--when the God of War Collection was announced, an even more surprising and exciting bomb was dropped in these purported meeting minutes:
Dreamcast on the PS3.
Top 10 Dreamcast games we'd love to see on the PlayStation Network--photos
From the wording of supposedly leaked August 6 SCEA meeting notes found on several forums including NeoGAF, it sounds like both PS2 and Dreamcast games will soon be available over PSN, much like PS1 games are already. That is big news. With PS2, PS1, and Dreamcast titles under their belts, it could be argued that the PS3 would have a Virtual Console that, while not as retro as Nintendo's, would be nearly unbeatable in offering the best of the late '90s and early '00s. After all, back then, the Dreamcast and PS2 were the biggest, bitterest rivals in town. It hasn't been confirmed that these notes are real, but they certainly seem too detailed and logical to not be.
The cynics might roll their eyes. Hardware backwards-compatibility was killed off on the PS3, and it seems like reselling these titles on the PSN could smack of double-dipping. Offering cheaper (and possibly even HD-upscaled) versions of last-gen classics would be a welcome idea, except for those who have been patiently holding onto their dusty discs of yesteryear.
Still, our hearts are racing. We just got through teary reminiscences on the Dreamcast's 10th anniversary, and now it seems like we might have a DC revolution on our hands sooner rather than later. Jet Grind Radio? Crazy Taxi? And dare we say it--Seaman? For our complete wish list on the Dreamcast games we'd like to see make it over to downloadable format, check out the gallery.
Of course, DC games could also be on their way to the 360, for all we know (and some, like Ikaruga, already are). But Sony's already on a roll with its cheaper, slimmer PS3. Would PS2 and DC games on the PS3 help turn Sony back into a superpower?

I think those were the meeting notes. From what I remember they didn't say anything about Dreamcast games.

I'd pay good money for Crazy Taxi from PSN.

I'm sure there are quite a few Dreamcast titles that would sell well.

I have to say that when I pull out an older game to play again oftentimes the memory of it is much better than actually playing it. This was the case for my first Virtual Console purchase too - Kid Icarus. I'm afraid that playing a lot of the DC games would result in the same thing. I've become way more cautious regarding which older games I purchase nowadays...but I'm sure that there are enough out there that will impulse buy to make it a profitable venture for Sony if they decide to go ahead with it.

I think it's a bit hit or miss depending on the game and what you like to play now. Personally I haven't enjoyed any of my old favorite NES games if I go back to them now. There are a few SNES games that I can still get into. However there are a lot more PS1 and PS2 games that I enjoy, but I think that's because they are closer to current gen games.
So from that, I think I'd probably be easily able to get into DC games.

Going back to old games is really hard.
Partly because they are not as good as you remember them (I tried booting up some N64 games in real and rom form a while back and it was horrid.) Same for Playstation. I wanted to get a bit of a demolition derby fix and found that Destruction Derby (in all forms and consoles) is pretty much unplayable.
But mostly because the experience is not the same. With NES it was about playing marathons sessions until the machine went blinky-blue and you had to blow out your cart. With Sega it was all about the "amazing" graphics on the big square 27 inch RCA. Playing for the greats for hours while using the lesser Sega tapes as coasters. That time is over now.
Jumping Flash is still kick ass. I like that game.
Isnt Nintendo butt buddies with Sega nowadays? Why arent they getting DC privileges? Is it just be that wii memory cant hold a DC game?

GPU:100 MHz PowerVR2 CLX2
Media: 1.2 GB GD-ROM
Wii
CPU: 729 MHz IBM PowerPC "Broadway"
GPU: 243 MHz ATI "Hollywood"

we talk about emulation of DC games on the Wii.. to emulate Sega Dreamcast game, you need a much faster machine since the Wii hardware is different than Dreamcast. 729 Mhz doesn't cut it. I doubt the Wii have the power to run those. PS3 and Xbox has higher potential. :look:
This has been shown with the difficulty of emulation for ps2 and wii on PC. it is such a pain since you need a monster of a PC machine to do it and get decent speed.

I would DL Power Stone for sure.
I also think that it'd be awesome if the Metal Gear series were to be HD-upscaled and re-released for the PS3. I loved MGS2, but never got around to playing my copy of MGS3:S. I don't own a PS2 anymore, and just recently sold my 60GB PS3 to buy the newer PS3 slim.

I know it's not a Dreamcast game, but I would love to see SNK's Baseball Stars (NES) make an appearance on PSN. You listening, Sony?

I'm curious to know how they will emulate the PS2. I was under the impression that Sony had already determined PS2 software emulation to be impossible with the PS3's hardware.
If it is true that they have accomplished PS2 emulation, I hope they release a firmware update to allow all PS3's to play PS2 games from the disk, and not force us to download games we already own.

Sony says a lot of things that aren't true when it's what they want people to believe. Remember how it was impossible to add rumble to the PS3 controllers?

honestly, I would prefer that they re-make and restore ps2 game into HD rather than just churn out the same ugly last-gen game on their PSN store for a quick buck.

Nobody mentioned Shenmue.
I loved that game and I still want the sequel. I remembered buying the Xbox just for Shenmue II. heheh

No, I don't remember that. I could have sworn they just said it was "last-gen" and that people would rather have motion control...

they also never said ps2 software emulation was impossible either for the record, they just mentioned how difficult and time consuming a task it would be

They shifted to the "rumble is last-gen" once people called BS on it being impossible.

Hmm well you're obviously right... I don't know why they feel the need to make up stupid stuff like that.

Don't get me wrong, I have a PS3, but the Sony PR team has said some silly things :P
