#65 Stinger is a rip off of Superman's flying car.

If Tecmo Super Bowl isn't in the top 3, this list is bogus to the max.

Can't see the list here at work due to ign block.. could you paste it? I'm sure the list is fairly obvious and the top 10 has super mario brothers 1-3, contra, zelda, etc, but I'd like to see it anyway.

wtF! Why doesn't IGN ever release their lists all at once?! Does anybody know the title of a 3rd person running game, where you're running forward, through the desert, while avoiding cacti and other crap. I don't know how accurate this description is anymore, because the last time I played this game was about 15 years ago.

World Runner? It sounds to me like World Runner. I had World Runner 3D - you pressed select and it would go red/blue. Came with old skool 3D glasses. I liked that game. Basically, you run forward and try to avoid "trees" while shooting things and collecting.. other things. You can also jump and have to jump large gaps and what not by pressing forward to speed up or back to slow down.

OMG YES!!!!!! I've been (inactively) searching for the title of that game for the longest time. I just wanted to find it for memory's sake. Thank you so much! Gonna find a random post of yours so I can rep you.

There was this other game I played. It was a side-scrolling platform game--not unlike Commander Keen. I think the main character's name started with a "Z." Maybe there was a "Cool" in the title too. Hahha. No wait, I just found it. It's titled "Totally Rad", and the guy's name is Spike. Great memories.

Noice.

Edit: Sorry, nvm, I can't rep you. 1,043 of your 1,044 posts are all in the Gamer's Lounge. =( Here's a virtual high five, though. *VIRTUAL HIGH FIVE*!!!!!!!!!!!!! yeah!!!!!!!

wtF! Why doesn't IGN ever release their lists all at once?!

it's simple. the more pages you have to view on IGN the more ad impressions they can sell/claim. and the more "traffic" they'll have on their site as each visitor views multiple pages instead of one single page.

almost every website does this.

tmnt is 98? this list is whack already

oh and then they put astynax at 97 and totally redeemed themself.

I wouldn't have minded if they listed these ten at a time... i dont think games 100-50 need a whole page each.

Tecmo Super Bowl at 53?!?

Are they kidding?

Do they understand how freakin' DEEP this game is for an NES sports title?

I still play this game.

Idiots. Y'all have fun wasting your time with the rest of this absurdity.

I was disappointed to see Ice Hockey so low, just a few months ago me and 3 buddies busted that out and played that instead of NHL 09. I would love to see someone hack that for 4 player support. I agree with Tecmo Super Bowl being too low as well, my roommate downloads the "updated" version each year that people put out that has actual rosters and what not. Still really fun to play.

Too low:
Ice Hockey (way too low)
Kung Fu
Tecmo Super Bowl (way too low)
Dr Mario
Crystalis

Too high:
Castlevania 2 (total pile)
Metal Gear (MGS was groundbreaking, MG was too ambitious for its hardware)
Micro Machines (really?)

I also see a ton of titles I don't even recognize in here. I'm going to need to dig up my list of ~30 or so NES titles I really liked and see if they made the list or not.

Any guesses at the top 20? SMB 1 & 3, Mega Man 2 & 3, Zelda, Final Fantasy, River City Ransom, Ninja Gaiden, Tecmo Bowl & Dragon Warrior are probably locks. I always liked Baseball Simulator 1.000 & Super Dodgeball, but I bet they aren't ranked.

i agree with both your lows and highs.
I can't believe baseball stars is on there, baseball simulator was soooo much better (I too am assuming it won't be on there).

tetris is really low and so is tmnt2, i wouldve thought they'd both be in the top 20.

contra will be top 10. punch out will be top 20 for sure and I would imagine adventure island will be in there somewhere. ducktales game in the top 20?
blastermaster? edit: whoops just saw it's 22.

Definitely agree on Ice Hockey and Tecmo Super Bowl being far too low.

Figure your locks are probably right on -- I'd add Punchout/Mike Tyson's Punchout, Contra, and probably the original Castlevania. I wouldn't be surprised to see R.C. Pro-Am or Excitebike up there either.

I always loved Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball, Off-Road, and Fire & Ice, but I doubt any of those games make the list.

So here's the talley:
SMB - Yes
SMB3 - Yes
Mega Man 2 - Yes
Mega Man 3 - Yes
Final Fantasy - Yes
River City Random - Yes
Ninja Gaiden - Yes
Tecmo Bowl - No (OMG WTF BBQ?!?!)
Dragon Warrior - Yes
Zelda - Yes

Tecmo Bowl snubbed?!?!? Impossible. Find me someone who played NES that didn't play Tecmo Bowl. Bo Jackson FTW.

Can't believe I overlooked Kid Icarus & Metroid. SMB2 in the top 20 is too high for me.

Also snubbed IMO: Double Dribble, California Games, Marble Madness, Paperboy, Pro Wrestling (how can they leave that out?!?), Super Dodgeball.

BB Sim 1.000 was way underrated. The SNES version was decent too.

I missed that TMNT2 was that low, it needed to be 20 spots higher. Good call on Punch-out, Contra and Ducktales. I overlooked those. I'm also suprised they think there are 100 NES games better than Adventure Island...

I can't believe I forgot all about Icarus too.. that game was one of my favorites bitd. I'm not too surprised about the list although I think SMB2 should be in the top 10 simply because it sold a lot of copies and even though it was a strange game, everyone I know still played the crap out of it. Was it the "best" of the NES? No, but they put RCR in there, which was a really really good game, but I doubt had the same following (at the time). RCR may be considered better now, but I was the only kid I knew that had it, whereas everyone had SMB2.

Wow, that list is terrible. Tecmo Super Bowl laid the groundwork for all current football games (in terms of depth), but I'm ok with Tecmo Bowl being left off the list (assuming Super Bowl gets a higher spot). Good call on Pro Wrestling, that is BY FAR the best wrestling game on the NES. It seems they didn't put games that were better known for being on other systems high or even on the list (Tetris and Paperboy respectively).

It also baffles me why Solomon's Key gets no love. That is a fantastic action/puzzler that's quite a challenge.

wow, i just noticed that pro wrestling isn't even on the list? that's some garbage right there. I played the crap out of that game.
also, even though they might be somewhat "generic" now, I don't see how they could leave out the sports games. those were huge back then.
they actually left a lot of games off this list. gyromite, wrecking crew, and hogan's alley, for example. i guess they didn't have that much room. duck hunt is pretty down on the list, i'd have given that a higher rank and put hogan's alley where it currently resides.

RCR is a little on the short side (if you rush through) and is missing a save feature, but it has a ton of depth for a NES game. My little brother and I still play on VC sometimes.

Here's a good question: what were the best 2P simultanueous games on NES? RCR and Bubble Bobble come to mind immediately...

JerodKing
10-23-2009, 07:47 AM
Oh Bubble Bobble, how I loved you. I still tremble at the thought of those ghost looking things that would come out if you took too long. Me and my brother used to play that all the time, but I don't think I beat it until my buddy had it on his calculator, and I had way too much free time in Calc1 in high school.

Other fun multiplayer games were Ice Hockey, Double Dragon II, Contra, Tecmo Super Bowl, and I'm really drawing a blank on some other ones I feel like.

Everyone keeps talking about Blades of Steel, I kinda can't believe I never played it, seems like I missed out as a kid. Was Marble Madness 2 player? I can't remember right now (haven't played it in 15-20 years) but I loved that game when I was young, but again never beat it (rental) though me and my brother played it constantly.

10-23-2009, 10:53 AM
I personally liked it better, but that could be because I grew up playing DW1, and didn't start Final Fantasy til 2 on the SNES. When I was younger I liked the one man show of DW1, like a 1 man wrecking crew that destroyed everything, while other people needed help, but now I don't think I like that as much as a party.

Phrozt
10-23-2009, 11:56 AM
DW doesn't have NEAR the storyline of FF, but I found it a lot of fun anyway. I liked playing it on an emulator much better so I could turn up super speed to get through the xp grind. That and saving states made it so I didn't have to constantly go back to town.

I would probably go with Dragon Warrior 3 or 4 over 1, honestly. If you have a PS2, Dragon Quest VIII is the best entry in the series as far as I'm concerned.
