Xbox LIVE Preview Program: Zune, Facebook and Twitter

I am happy to announce that we’re doing an Xbox LIVE Update Preview program for upcoming features such as Zune, Facebook and Twitter. Much like we have done in the past, you’ll need to visit the Microsoft Connect site from this link and sign in with your Windows LIVE ID that is connected to your Xbox LIVE Gamertag.

Once you do that, you need to fill out the "Xbox LIVE Update Preview Sign Up" survey in order to be considered for receiving the Preview System Update. We're asking a fewquestions about where you live, your home network, ISP connection and a few other pieces of information. We are looking for a good cross-section of our members in order to get the best feedback we can.The Xbox team will then review all of the applications and if you’re selected we’ll send you an email notifying you of your acceptance in the program. A couple of points before you head off to register:

* We’re looking for multiple thousands of participants, so your chances of making it in are good
* This opportunity is open to all Xbox LIVE Members in regions where Xbox LIVE is available
* Just completing the survey does not automatically get you access to the Preview Program. We’ll be making final selections from the completed surveys and send you an email if you are selected.
* While both Xbox LIVE Gold and Silver members can sign up, Priority will be given to Gold members in the selection process.

It's not really beta..you just get it before anyone else and they just make sure everything runs well on their end essentially. Otherwise, everything is fully functional. I've been part of of the Preview program twice, so yes, I should know :D

Well not from my classification. Normally a beta has bugs they need to fix before they need to launch. It's more accustomed to getting a game 2 weeks early from launch date than a beta..but I like you contradicting everything I say Terminal eveyrtime I post something. Thanks. :)

So... I think a lot of people want it. Facebook and Twitter are two of the most popular websites around right now. It's a no brainer to add support for them.

I feel like they're adding it just because it's popular. well, coffee is popular too, so maybe they should put a coffee maker add-on for the 360? it certainly gets hot enough...

True about typing, that would be a pain. I don't have any spare USB keyboards and theres no way I'd attach one of those ugly messenger things to my controller. I still would like to view pictures on my big screen and just mess around on Facebook.

don't get me wrong, i'm all for free and i actually think it'd be kind of cool to have twitters/status updates come in right to the dashboard or something, but if it comes at some kind of performance decrease, then i wish this could be an optional update.

I believe you can view photos and other stuff on there as well, not just update your status. Why don't you sign up for the preview and find out? ;)

so why didnt you quote me where i called it a final release candidate before RTM? a beta would have had to happen months ago not right before release.. this is more of a stress test to ramp up the servers so they dont get slammed all at one time.. and why do you even care? go play your ps3 and stop worrying about what others get to play on their 360

My zune bricked for a week because of some stupid shit M$FT did. My 360 got RROD twice in 2 months. Vista is obviously just a piece of shit memory hogging OS. Luckily for them Windows 7 appears to be a solid OS .. Just wish that Firefox was fully compatible and didn't crash all the damn time on it.

Facebook, Twitter, Zune, Last.fm they all work nicely, although you miss a lot of stuff with facebook, twitter and last.fm are cool as the real thing and zune looks nice, really fast streaming, but no free movies just to try the service, MCSFT expects us to pay for the movies and give them feedback, good luck with that...

I didn't get an e-mail but my xbox decided it would update itself so I must have been "selected".

Personally I don't care for the two (I think) extra tabs they added into the dashboard, it certainly doesn't make the rest of look any less ugly :lmao: it just makes it even more of a fustercluck IMO.

i got the update on thursday and the email came on friday.. weird

it only added one set of tabs.. the one that facebook is on.. zune replaced the video and audio market place.. and last.fm is on that row as well.. one annoying thing about last.fm is you cant stream while your playing.. it runs like an app with pictures of the band popping up on the screen..

That's exactly what I'm saying and it's what husker is failing to understand. AKA in his perceived example, Nintendo's 4.2 Wii update was a "Beta" because it bricked consoles modded or not when it was released. It's like saying you going out and buying a copy of Windows 7 right now of the store shelves, installing it, getting a BSOD and then saying "Ah..this must be a Beta copy.".

Sounds like you need to be nicer to your stuff.

Zune's bricking have been very few and far between. If it happened to you I wouldnt blame it on a microsoft update. Mine is hooked up to the computer whenever Im not using it and receives updates and everything immediately. Never had a problem.

It also sounds like you dont really know how to use vista. Doing some configuration in it decreases the memory usage by a ton and makes it a very strong OS. Attaching yourself to the slander of the uneducated against vista doesn't help you.

You know what shows me you're a complete fanboy? You have to attempt to justify to everyone that you own microsoft stuff. Go back to your PS3 threads and let people who aren't biased have a functional thread.

Yeah it is getting too cluttered for my taste... not that it really matters to me because I don't spend much time on the dashboard.

I got the update on Friday night...the only thing I really see myself utilizing is the last.fm thing but I do wish(as someone already said) that you could stream it in the background while playing a game...

The facebook thing is meh(a little clunky and not really aesthetically pleasing)...and I don't really use twitter...

I still don't have the e-mail though? And just a heads-up, not everyone who signed up for it got to do the preview thing. My buddy signed up for it but never got the update...

You're wrong. All zunes of a particular model bricked at some point last year because MS farked up some code. They then had to release a firmware update. All zunes were bricked for about 2 days. I'm not going to bother linking to it, so you'll just have to take my word.

yeah it was an older model that had an issue with the leap year so once the date changed to 1/1/09 it was fine
