Do you mean we can just choose from another Conde Nast publication, or just those few you mentioned?

As I mentioned, at first i was offered Lucky, Glamour and Allure, which I declined.

I asked ' Are other choices available? '

She said' Sure, these are the mags we publish, would u like something from these?" and she proceeded to read out the entire list., and I made my choices.

etc etc..

Since I had a four year sub, i thought i should ask if they could break up my subscription; she happily obliged; said it was no problem whatsoever. She was very helpful, cheerfuland polite!

Hope it works for you!

I called Nickelodean Magazine and they said that the last issue will be the December/January issue and they are not issuing any refunds since they are ceasing publication there are no more issues to be sent out after the final issue.

Hi All..

Those who have COOKIE, Gourmet, and the bridal mags..

Well I called COOKIE CS today, and asked what they were going to do about my sub which expires 4 yrs from now..they will be sending out a letter giving you the option of obtaining a refund, or converting to other mags. Mags they are offering are Lucky, Allure and Glamour. I told her i don't like any of those and she said "you can choose from our publications, what do u have in mind?'. So I broke my 4 yr sub , as it was stacked, and opted for Wired, Bon Appetit, Arch Digest..

Don't wait for the letter to come in the mail, you can do it over the phone! Have your mailing label ready.

G'luck..

Thank you for this info! Wired is very sought-after here. There's a few who are looking for a sub with that particular mag. Thanks again for the info! Repped!

I just received Esquire, I had a free 6 month sub from FBM I think, but then I noticed my exp date and read the letter enclosed with it. They extended my Esquire sub 3 issues worth for every 1 issue that was remaining with my old Computer Shopper sub! That's a hella lot, now my sub ends Oct. 2027. Anyone receive another magazine in place of Computer Shopper?

Transfer of my PC Magazine subscription to Maximum PC never happened, despite assurances from PC Mag that it would. Did anyone get the transfer completed? I filed a BBB complaint, and got this response:
"Originally, subscribers were going to be transferred to Maximum PC. We regret to inform Mr. Ho there was a change in that arrangement because Maximum PC declined the transfer of these subscriptions. Therefore, the subscribers were switched to the digital format of PC Magazine with the option to cancel and receive a refund."

Cookie Magazine is done too. :( I got a card saying I'll get Allure now instead. (Yeah, beacuse being a mom allows so much time for glamour!) It says to choose not to receive Allure to contact 1-800-456-1974 for a full refund of remaining issues. I can't remember if I paid for this subscription or not.

Nick Jr. Magazine ceased publication a few months ago (back in August maybe?), and we got notice that we'd be receiving Nick (or Nickelodeon) in its place. This past month we received word that Nick magazine was ceasing publication as well, and just the other day got a check in the mail for the remainder of our subscription.

Diet & Nutrition Magazine is going green which means, "digital" effective March 2010. I know this means it's still in business which I'm glad, but I will miss the wonderful quality pictures and print this magazine had. For any subscribers, last print issue is Jan/Feb 2010 with a front cover that gives instructions to register for "digital".

I know this means it's still in business which I'm glad, but I will miss the wonderful quality pictures and print this magazine had. For any subscribers, last print issue is Jan/Feb 2010 with a front cover that gives instructions to register for "digital".

I know, I LOVED that magazine and saved EVERY ISSUE for future reference. I have probably tried at least one recipe from every issue for the past 5 years

Here's the email:
For five years, Today’s Diet & Nutrition has been the “go-to” publication for health-conscious consumers in search of creative and wholesome ideas to help nourish themselves and their families.

Our relevant and up-to-date content promotes a healthy lifestyle and showcases a wide range of products, reference guides and recipe ideas that support anyone’s desire for improved nutrition and overall wellness. A full decade now into the 21st century, we are in a truly digital age where all forms of media, from newspapers to books to magazines, are increasingly being read in pixels rather than on paper.

In keeping with the times, Today’s Diet & Nutrition is going green in 2010, transforming from a print publication to an all-digital magazine format.

The same delicious recipes, weight loss strategies, health and fitness advice, and cooking tips our readers have come to love and rely upon remain integral to the digital TD&N.

In addition to the environmental benefits, producing Today’s Diet & Nutrition as a digital publication allows us to expand the magazine’s frequency to monthly starting in March.

The place to find the all-digital Today’s Diet & Nutrition is our newly redesigned website –

www.TDN-digital.com

The site offers much of the great features, tips and recipes that have been seen in past issues, organized in the same topic sections as the magazine.

The Flash preview window provides a look into our Current Issue and highlights some of our featured editorial. Cool features on the new site include our Recipe of the Day, our Q&A surveys and Food for Thought trivia questions.

News and events are also updated regularly and hot links are provided for all of the health conscious individuals in our audience.
Visit us today at www.TDN-digital.com.

To view our January/February digital edition, just click the "Digital Magazine" button.

Our new digital format also means new and different accessibility to your issues of TD&N Digital.

Now, you don’t have to remember to bring a printed copy along with you, because your digital edition is accessible anywhere there’s an Internet connection

So, whether you’re in the kitchen looking to make something different, at the office planning the family dinner, enjoying a latte and the wireless connection at a local coffee shop, or on your mobile phone while you’re at the market, Today’s Diet & Nutrition Digital is always at your fingertips.

PASTE Magazine, which many of us had for free or for super cheap via front page deals is suspending it's PRINT publication:

Paste Magazine Suspends Print Publication
Published at 5:00 PM on September 1, 2010

Today Paste Media Group announces, with deepest sadness, the suspension of the Paste magazine print product.

Struggles with mounting debt were made public last year when our readers responded with generosity to save the magazine. But the prolonged downturn of the ad market has forced a hiatus. All subscribers have access to the digital version of their magazines through the June/July issue on PasteMagazine.com. Paste, while considering strategic alternatives, is focusing on its digital assets, including PasteMagazine.com.

We thank all of those who have shown such tremendous support to a vision of independent media focused on Signs of Life in Music, Film & Culture, including subscribers, advertisers, writers, photographers, illustrators, publicists, record labels, movie studios, book & game publishers and others in the press.

Also, an unexpected change of Editors over at shopping Magazine LUCKY is looking as if it is signal a potential shift to digital format only as well. LUCKY has been in trouble for some time, despite having invented a whole new niche of magazines centered around shopping and directing interested readers to web sales. Similar magazine DOMINO folded a while back, CARGO barely lasted long enough for even me to recall and similar magazines aimed at 2-income households with young kids and money to burn like COOKIE have gone bye-bye. Here's the article that is giving me the impression that LUCKY is headed away from Print :

Kim France Out at Lucky; Brandon Holley of Yahoo Takes Over

Blah blah blah......

........ The appointment of Ms. Holley, who has extensive digital credentials, signals a level of seriousness around the Web components of Lucky’s business, but it could also foretell a time when Lucky – the brand — might exist only in a digital form. Condé Nast has shown very little sentimentality around preserving underperfoming magazines; it closed four publications last year. And executives there apparently decided that Lucky, which has had three publishers over the course of its existence, needed a fresh editorial approach...... Blah blah blah

I rather see them fail before crAPPLE with their icraPAD save it.

Who want to see overprice, overhype, inferior product company dominate another market. Anyone can take dog crap, spend millions of dollar hyping it up, then call it Gourmet food!

As for Gourmet Magazine,
4. Gourmet - 977,000

I am surprise Gourmet has low numbers!

Our family has been subscribing to Gourmet for last 20 years before its cancellation.

Oh no! I love Lucky Magazine! I don't want the digital verson, I hope they don't go to that...argh! My subscription expires in 2015!

You know, you might want to send them an email telling them you heard about the change in editors and you really want to see them continuing with their PRINT format. tell them how much you look forward to each issue, how having the magazine to look through at your leisure and away from the glare of a computer screen enhances your interest in the products that are featured. I would also tell them that if they became just another shopping portal on the net, you wouldn't be very excited or likely to stop by because LUCKY is your "pre-shopping" experience. That kind of thing.

I think if enough readers wrote them about the trend towards digital versions only and how they dislike it for certain types of magazines, it would, at the very list, register with the publishers. Even a dozen emails would register. Make sure you email the Publisher of the magazine and not just their customer service email. The Publisher's name is listed in the Masthead and should be easy to google for the email.

I think LUCKY has something unique going that they would lose if they decided to transform into just another shopping website. I like the stickers and the opportunity to relax with the magazine in my hands. The ads in the magazine stay in my mind MUCH longer than some tiny ad on a screen. That is what they need to hear because they need their advertisers to know that the print format is still important.

Just my 5 cents! (inflation!)

Newsweek's proposed Merger with The Daily beast crashes & burns which could be good news or bad news depending on how you look at it.

My take on all this is that the Bloomberg merge with US News & World Report has so improved THAT magazine that who cares what Tina Brown does to newsweek anymore! If the "Business " name in the bloomberg mag was holding you back from a free subscription offer, don't be a fool. Grab as many years as you can NOW, the content is great.

Re Newsweek:

‘Daily Beast,’ ‘Newsweek’ Merger Hits the Skids: Update, 10-18-10
Published on October 18, 2010
The Daily Beast is through with talks with Newsweek about a possible merger of the two media entities. Such a deal would have made Daily Beast co-founder Tina Brown editor of Newsweek, but Brown said in a memo to staff that, while the “engagement†was fun, “the pre-nup got too complex.â€

She added that The Daily Beast is “on a tear and any partnership we think about has to build on that incredible growth†(via The Huffington Post). That’s all the detail the memo gave.

NOW FOR SOME GOOD NEWS!

Magazine Launches, Closures Slow in 2010
Published on October 12, 2010

A total of 176 new magazines launched in the first nine months of 2010; that number compares to 259 new magazines that launched in the same period last year, according to MediaFinder.com.

But while new magazine launches slowed down in the first three quarters of this year, so did magazine closures: 127 magazines folded through the first nine months of the year, compared to 383 which folded in the same period of 2009. A total of 26 print magazines converted to online-only formats this year, down from 64 which did so in 2009, MediaFinder.com says.

Category Winners, Losers

Food magazines were the top category for new launches in 2010, with 24 new titles including Northeast Flavor. Regional Interest was another hot category, with 14 new magazines, including Bel-Air magazine. The Home magazine category declined in 2010. Twelve home magazines folded, including Home Miami.

The Sports magazine category also declined, with 11 folded titles, including regional editions of Competitor magazine.

B-to-B

44 business-to-business magazines folded, while 29 new titles launched. Fourteen print b-to-b magazines moved to online-only formats.

Awww... that stinks. I was receiving this. I don't think I had that many issues remaining anyway. But I can understand why they fold. Magazine industry is suffering a bit but the news industry is probably doing worst. So these two failures combined would make it logical that this magazine folded, especially if they only publish monthly. News is probably outdated by then. But it would truly be missed.

@Justan - if you haven't already signed up for a free sub to Bloomberg Business News Weekly, you should - it's become what U.S. News & World report used to be but with a stronger emphasis on the business end of things. Bloomberg has rounded out their reporting to popular culture trends, entertainment and global issues. it's a damn fine little magazine.

I wasn't sure I was gonna like it but I find myself flipping through it the day it arrives. Most of my free mags get tossed on a pile for weekend perusal.

Monthly Ad Pages Increase 7% in Dec., 4% for the Year

Media Options & Channels: Magazines
Of the 149 monthly magazines tracked by minonline, 99 saw ad pages increase in 2010. For the year, ad pages increased 4.2%, with ad pages up 7% in Dec.

That compares to just 10 of the 150 monthlies tracked last year that saw an increase in ad pages, minonline writes.

People StyleWatch saw the biggest percentage gain, up 49.5% (up by 311.2 pages), while Vogue had the biggest gain in terms of ad pages, with an increase of 319 pages (up by 16%).

The rest of the top 10 gainers included:
—Elle Decor, up 34.7% and 288.5 pages
—Harpers Bazaar, up 17.7% and 268.8 pages
—Marie Clair, up 19.5% and 219 pages
—Chicago, up 18.9% and 214 pages
—InStyle, up 8.6% and 199.9 pages
—Real Simple, up 13.8% and 199 pages
—Elle, up 9.1% and 191 pages
—Parenting (Early Years), up 21.6 and 170.8 pages

Overall, monthlies gained 4.2% for the year. But the trend was more positive at the end of the year, with December ad pages up 7%. That followed a 4% gain in November and an 11% gain in October, writes Business Insider.

I highlighted the titles we might wind up seeing offers for as free subs based on past upticks in their ad pages.

JPMorgan Chase unit to buy stake in Johnson Publishing
July 06, 2011|By Robert Channick | Tribune staff reporter
After nearly 70 years as a family-owned business, Johnson Publishing Co., the Chicago-based publisher of Ebony and Jet magazines, is taking on a partner.
Johnson plans to announce Wednesday that JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s special investments group has acquired a "substantial" minority stake in the company.

The media empire, which has long served a predominantly African American readership, has struggled in recent years with declining circulation and advertising sales. The partnership will accelerate a strategic initiative under new Chief Executive Desiree Rogers aimed at boosting revenues, stabilizing circulation and expanding the company's digital footprint.

"We've had to take these very iconic brands and get them up to speed quickly," said Rogers, the former White House social secretary and head of Peoples Energy, who joined the company last summer. "It allows us to do that much quicker."

The company's flagship monthly, Ebony, has recently regained its circulation base of 1.25 million, after dropping to about 997,000 last year. Jet, a newsmagazine, has a weekly circulation of about 800,000. The publications rank first and third, respectively, among magazines aimed at a black readership, according to company officials.

"We've never had a partner in the business before. It's always been 100 percent family owned," Rogers said.

The special investments group is a private equity unit within JPMorgan Chase.

This earlier note from the Tribune shows that these issues have been going on for some time:

Johnson Publishing CEO Desiree Rogers trying to breathe new life into Ebony, Jet magazines
By Phil Rosenthal | March 6, 2011
Back in the 1970s, when New Orleans' historic Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club was struggling, a man named Roy Glapion took on the challenge of refortifying the long-standing Mardi Gras krewe, which held special significance to the city's African-American community. Building up its membership rolls and its coffers, Glapion ensured its long-term viability and, when Fat Tuesday comes again this week, the first parade uptown will be that of the Zulus. Up north in Chicago, Glapion's daughter has embraced a similar cause with another storied organization in tough times.
