i think the boldness threshold should be upped to 150 or 200 because many people are starting to hit 100. what good is it if everyone is bold?

i think the whole point is that its a "seasoned user" mark. we can "trust" these people with negative rep pts.

Not many people are bold, anyway, if you look at how many members there are (~80,000) compared to the small number (how many???) of those who are bold.

it just seems a lot more people are getting bold now

it just seems a lot more people are getting bold nowYes, because the site has been here longer, people have been around longer, and the rep points add up. Also, there is more talk about boldness in the Lounge, which brings it to our awareness.

Most people who are bold have been contributing for a good amount of time, but there are others who have joined recently and hit one big deal and become bold because of that. It wouldn't really do anything by putting the limit higher because people will reach it eventually.

What is the nerp threshold?

I don't see that many boldies out there, who cares, if they put in the time and effort to get bold then more power to them.

The whole rep system is imperfect, but perfect in its imperfectness. Kinda like the US government.

What is the nerp threshold?
Bold = able to give nerps.

The system seems to be working as intended. I think people just expect something different out of it.

I have not given a nerp yet.........I like that I have the ability to do so, and I will use it if I come across something that warrants it. But I would never abuse it. I think the system works well.

I agree 100% with Woody86. There's a lot of "new" people who've gone Bold only after a very short time here. I think it should be a combination of post count, rep points, and time on SD. If that warrants me losing my bold, that's fine with me, but it really doesn't serve any purpose if people can register and go bold after one good post in Hot deals. They're not "seasoned" users of SD, they were just lucky to find one good deal on their own or were the first to post a great deal from another site.

I know from experience, because I believe I got somewhere around 80 rep points just on one of my very first posts in Hot Deals alone.

Is there any evidence that nerps are being abused?

It's been discussed before that there should be a limit on how many rep points an OP can get from one thread. That would at least somewhat limit the large jump from one good thread. Of course for those users who just continually copy deals from another site in hopes of gaining rep, it would only slow them down a little. ( I have a particular user in mind... )

I don't have anything important to say. I just wanted to be the first to post in this thread who WASN'T bolded.

That way it won't feel like everyone's bolded here. :)

I also agree. It does seem that it is getting slightly out of control and certain people who don't post many deals are trying to become bold just to "be cool". Though, I am not the one in charge of saying who is & isn't, and stating the guidelines/requirements to become a privileged member. It may have to get revamped, JMO.

Is there any evidence that nerps are being abused?I don't know if this counts as "evident abuse" to others like it is to me or not. I came across earlier today a thread posted by a user (the one Wammer alluded to I think) who is bold. The post is clearly a verbatim copy/paste job of an FW post. Another user must have done something to "expose" him/her. S(H)e apparently gave a nerd to that user, who put up a post about it. I actually repped that poor user to offset the nerp.

Incidentally, did I do anything wrong to rep someone like that?

Absolutely not. I repped the other user (x3) too!

Are nerps being abused a lot or just once in a while?

So did I -- but only (x1) :)

I think the nerp system has potential for abuse with the increase in rep addicts but that has not been the case thus far.

Personally, I do not know if "seasoned users" need the ability to negative rep someone. If you don't like a post, why not ModAlert it like everyone else and let the Mods handle it. What's wrong with that?

I am sure if I had the nerping ability it would feel empowering, but if you ever do use it, I am sure the people you nerp will many times have a hissy fit and cause you more grief than the actual reason you nerp them in the first place.

i've never nerp'd even tho i can think of occasions that i should - i usually just mod alert posts that are offensive or deserve nerps

Should one Nerp a noob who asks for or puts rep instructions in his sig?IMHO, mention it in a reply first, and if it doesn't get removed, nerp away!

Different colors of boldness for every 50 rep points would be cool. Maybe something like ebay does for every "tier" of feedback they reach?
