i think if you have 100+ rep points you should be able to block guests from viewing your thread. this would entice more people to register and not leech off of us..
i hate when i see 46 users and 86 guests. WTF?

I disagree. It would stop me from registering.

Maybe a trial period, like Paypal has. You can use it a few times before registering. I think SD could benifit more with more registered users.
actually this would work well in coupons forum, some ppls do not post coupon codes and request users to PM them because of guests, this option might be enabled by checking a box while posting. so posted coupon codes will be seen by registered users only. this will also reduce PM traffic

its been suggested in many ways and forms, but this is a public site and meant to be accessible by anyone. you really don't get anything by forcing people to sign up for a spam account.

How does it materially affect you (or anyone else) one way or the other?
Keep in mind that Slickdeals.net is supported by ad revenue. Your proposal would reduce that revenue, by chasing away visitors, whose clicks go a long way to financing the service you enjoy.
Would people feel better if there were hundreds or thousands of fake IDs setup by people who never post?
Take a look at the member list. Sort it by posts, and you'll see that the vast majority of members never post, anyway.

In the era of BugMeNot, mandatory registration doesn't accomplish much.

Bargainshare requires you to register before looking at their posts. Neat idea, but they really don't seem to be getting any bigger.....I'd rather hit FW or SD because I don't HAVE to be logged in to view.

I was more thinking about the coupon section like mem said. I would rather the coupons be used by reg members.

Forcing people to register means that tens of thousands of bogus accounts would be setup, for no benefit to the owner of this site.
If people don't get their coupon info here, they'll get it at any of myriad of other free websites.
I understand that you'd rather a "regular member" got the good info, but what makes someone a regular member, other than taking a minute to register (probably with a throw-away email address).
Remember, what made Google so huge was that it was free and unrestricted.
The more visitors there are who click on links, the more ad revenue Mr. SD gets, and the better the website is (more servers, more bandwidth, up-to-date features, etc.).
If coupon use is restricted to one-time, then PMs are still the way to go. If they are not restricted, who cares if everyone else gets the codes here - would you rather they go to another site where they don't have to register?
It's not like people who post codes here have a monopoly on them.

I see your point, however, most likely people would register as members and not contribute to the site in any way... There just doesn't seem like there would be an overall benefit to the SD community by doing that!

That's why I'm a "guest", so that we get a better website. Then I login to reply to people's threads, and by repping them. I think that if anyone is concerned that only "members" get the coupons, then PMs are the best way. That's what I've done for a couple of things.
