When I try to give a thumbs up to a thread, it doesn't work.
Instead a little grey thing with an "x" in it appears.
Is it because I haven't been here for a year?

no it takes more than one vote till it affects the thread....i think three votes per thumb.... so if there were already 2 and you gave another 1, it would make you think that only your vote made the thumb...then other times you would see that it doesnt make a thumb appear. if you put your mouse over the thumbs or x thing on the thread it'll show you how many votes there were

T...
firsonce.... how do you know about the exact #'s?
...(as someone already pointed out) If you hover your mouse pointer over the thumb(s) it will show you the total # of votes and the net votes (thumb-up gets +1, thumb-down gets -1).
If you care to hover over some (make sure it's not too few) of the threads that show 1 thumb and determine the MINIMUM net #, you know that's the minimum to get 1 thumb.
You can do the same for threads with 2 thumbs, 3 thumbs, ..., and determine the minimum for each.
In short, applying "use Observation to derive Inference" learned from high school Chemistry.
