I currently have a linksys wrt300n router, but thinking there might be better ones out there, and I also need to buy a wireless adapter for my xbox 360. What does everyone recommend for the best gaming router for the buck, and best wireless adapter for performance. Thanks all

Bumping this thread because it might be necessary for me to purchase one of these in the very near future. I will more than likely be moving into an apartment where wi-fi is provided(it's an in-law apartment).

you wont be happy with wireless if your used to playing on a wired connection..

For the past 4 years i used the MS wireless G adapter and had no issues at all. I was and am still a heavy downloader and stream movies and what not to my xbox over my wireless G router. Wireless G is still 54Mbps compared to most internet broadband speeds which are what 20Mbps.

They're including internet and cable in the price of the rent, so it's tough to pass up. Just trying to avoid the hassle of having a cable guy come and then pay each month for it as well.

Noooo. It's hard to explain. Its actually the internet that they use too. Basically I'll be living in an apartment that's connected to the landlord's house, so it's the landlords internet as well. I don't believe he'd be savvy enough to "throttle it down". Just us and them using the internet connection.

Well, ignore how shitty the connection we had whenever we played Borderlands...but before I moved to where I am I now, I had somewhat decent internet. I used the wireless N adapter and had no problems with lag while playing online. Can't say anything about streaming HD video or anything along those lines, but as far as gaming goes, the wireless N adapter worked fine, with no wireless induced lag.

That's kind of my thought. If you can find a deal on one, you could almost sell the you have now and not have much of a difference in costs from buying a new one or buying an adapter.

I've got a 120gb hd on mine right now, so cost of upgrading to the 360S with a new hard drive, I'm looking at 250 bucks or so at least, so spending the 65 that it costs to get the new wireless adapter only makes more sense.

Not having practiced what I preached:
X360 -[wired]-> DD-WRT/Tomato Router -[wireless]-> Landlor'ds WiFi router -> Internet

That way you have a seperate network than your landlord and have more control over your network. It'll probably have the same cost as buying the MS X360 adapter and take you a boat load of more time to set-up.

I was looking at the wireless N also, and went to Gamestop & Walmart on Saturday.. and neither of them had them in stock O_o

Went to Best Buy, and neither did they... wtf... so I ended up buying a third party device for $80 that I'm pretty happy with.

It comes with 2 little white boxes. You plug the first in electrically, then run an ethernet cable from that single port box, to your router.

Take the other little white box to where you want to get a connection. Plug it in electrically, then run an ethernet cable from one of the 4 ports, to your device. It works as a wireless bridge in a sense..

Not sure I understand this part...you had to get a wireless connection for your Xbox...(which I assume is in your entertainment center) yet you are going to put your PC in the same place so it will have a wired connection?

Your PC would still be hooked up wirelessly...and personally I would be very interested to see HOW MUCH you were slowing down the PS3 by connecting it through the secondary device instead of straight WiFi to the router.

It is like saying you have a bathtub faucet that will output 10 gallons per minute but all the pipes in your house only supply it with 5 gpm.

I had almost 0 issues playing Blops yesterday using this device. Occasional lag every 2 hrs or so, but I had occasional lag at my old place, nothing new there...

I think that is actually a great way to test it. Now...what will it affect I am not really sure...I am not good on the ping vs. rates vs baud yada yada... If I were to stab at it...I do not think the Mbps will change, just maybe the ping.

they are all pretty much the same thing.. either a broadcom chipset or a atheros chipset are the most common.. it doesnt really matter what the brand on the outside says those are 2 of the big suppliers for wireless router makers.. the major difference is in the software, which can be replaced by DD-WRT or tomato on most routers..

I meant ping vs. mbps. Not the serial number of the device. As in, what stats would you need to compare to see if the device is slowing down his laptop.


OHH, Homefriie, something that might actually help is if your lappy isn't Wireless N but the new device is...in that case, it would help out I'd assume.

a little of both, mbps will drop some and ping will go up a little but it wont be anything drastic.. you wont really notice much of a difference because with the speed tests it does a download test then an upload test.. but if they did both tests at the same time you would notice a bigger difference..

Why would that show any difference at all? In both scenarios he is getting his signal wirelessly. One straight from his wireless card, the other from a bridge which is getting it wirelessly. So if he is being limited on simultaneous upload/download, he is going to see it with either setup.. Right?

He SAID he was going wired...but his "wired" connection is to a wireless router that connects to his MAIN router which connects to the internetz. Does that slow his PS3 down or does it work the same? He is going to test with a laptop.
