I'm a 25 year old guy who lives in a crummy town called wilkes barre pennsylvania (the town where those judges sent kids to jail for cash scandal)....

I'm looking to go out west and always wanted to live in texas.

What's the best city to live in?

anywhere as far north of the border as possible. Austin is cool if you like music.

Seriously though most of TX if you speak english you're a minority

I'd probably pick Austin as it's "young" and "hip." I fly to Dallas in 4+ hours. :woot:

I've been to the valley, houston, and dfw on work and I have to be honest.. the further north the better in so many respects. I am definitely not referring to the spanish speaking population though, as I'm from FL and it's all the same to me

:tumblewed: There's nothing in north TX past DFW.

Austin's fun if you like a college town. So is College Station, but it's ONLY a college town. Not much else going on there.

Houston and Dallas aren't bad, but you would need to know where the job is before you could pick where to live in each city.

What do you do?

I've gone to a couple of different walmart locations when vacationing in FL and the CASHIER didn't even speak english one of the times through

I've lived all over Texas and if I had my choice, I'd live in Austin but the housing there is more expensive as the depression hasn't hit there as it has in other parts of the country. There's a great singles scene, wonderful music and art and some nice lakes and rivers.

What sort of work do you want to do and do you have any specific hobbies or interests? That might make a difference on where you should live.

Gonna greatly depend on your interests, job requirements, and income.

I like Austin, but frankly it's too damn hot here in the summer. I'm moving back up north. If you can handle 100+ for 90 days in the summer, you'll probably be okay here.

I work with the mentally challenged. I'm sure it will be very easy for me to find a job in that field anywhere I go.

My hobbies can be done anywhere.

I DON'T want insane hotness...the cooler the better. In my town though now it hits 90+ degrees for long stretches of time.

It gets over 100 degrees in most of Texas during the summer. The rest of the time, it's usually in the high 90's, this is in July and August but sometimes you'll hit 100+ in June or May. The only question is how many days will be that hot, you never know from one summer to the next.

If you don't want amazingly hot, you're looking at the wrong state.

:iagree: This has been our coldest winter yet. We've stayed in the 40s for a long time overnight. :cold: That means summer is going to SUCK. I plan on seeing 110s this summer. Ugh.

Houston- Pluses
Big City Living- Big Businesses
Lots of Museums
Lots of Outdoor parks for running/dog parks, free stuff etc.
Has EVERY STORE UNDER THE SUN- including- IKEA, MICRO CENTER,FRYS
MINUSES- Living in the City/Midtown/Heights is a little pricey compared to the rest of the country because the economy hasn't gone to shit!
Learn some Spanish...Lots of Mexicans 25%- But also a lot of Asians$20%/Caucasian45%/African 10%.

Austin-Fun Young city. Very liberal. Everyone rides their bike everywhere, lots of music,Hills, Lakes, Parks, hippies, whole foods,Matthew McCougnhey.
Minus-Cost of living,If you're not into the whole free trade organic yoga lifestyle, um...

Dallas could be cool they have a combination of the two cities aforementioned. It gets pretty cole there though. Youll get some snow and traffic can be a little nutty. Oh Yeah People from Dallas are OBSESSED with Texas. Ambulances painted like the state flag. They have big hair and country twang.
They are all great cities in their own way but like a few posters before said it mainly has to do with you and what you're into. Hope this helps!

Austin is wonderful, but the salaries won't go as high. Great place if you're in your 20's and want a good first career job, tough to make real $ there later in life when you have a family to support. The people are great, there are plenty of activities, people are highly educated and the city is beautiful. We're also from PA and loved this city. People just seemed more genuine here.

Houston is dirty and crime ridden, but pays great. Numerous $100K jobs floating around. Just throw a dart and you could catch one. One of the worst cities we've lived in, but we're thankfully only here for a few years.

Dallas is kind of in the middle. Lots of beautiful areas, lots of 70K - 80K jobs with a mix of all brackets still available. Housing is very cheap in some areas, downtown more expensive. Great restaurants and activities.

For quality of life, I have to say Austin or surrounding suburbs hands down. It just depends on where you're at in life and what your future goals are.

Cost of living here in Austin is relatively inexpensive. Just don't live downtown. And while Austin is toted as a "fresh, organic" hippie-like city, it's really not that much. :dontknow:

It's easily the most liberal city in Texas, from everything I've heard.

thats like claiming to be the smartest kid on the short bus... Who wants liberals?

OK I hate liberals but I would be an "independant" I'm pro choice yet don't like the gays or the government. I also hate christians (sundays around here I make my wife get up early and do everything for the day before the church freaks come out and ruin the town) I love having a wife making more money than me (mainly because she buys me stuff and it makes me feel dirty)

Oh, it's definitely the most liberal city in Texas, but I was speaking specifically regarding the organic foods and hippie lifestyle. While it exists it's not as widespread and the only thing available in Austin as people think it is. Sure it's a pretty healthy city, just not as hippie and such as everyone thinks it is.
