I have included some FAQ and Pics below I did earlier (Snedman)
Pictures/scans of the unit - battery, battery compartment, outside label 1 & 2, back of laptop, Hard drive compartment and fan area, hard drive, memory front & back, side of laptop 1.

Common questions:

Q.) Should I make a backup of the Factory Default Restore and the Applications and Drivers?
A.) Yes, this should be done immediately before any other configuration is completed. Most new laptops DO NOT come with a physical recovery disc. If your hard drive goes bad and this includes the recovery partition, then you will be SOL without these discs. The Default Factory restore size is 9.76GB (3 standard DVD media) The Applications and Drivers backup is 1.42GB (1 standard DVD media)

Two important things when creating these to DVD.
1.) Use the best media you can get. #1 Taiyo Yuden, #2 Verbatim, #3 Ritek are some of the top ones.

2.) Don't touch, move or use the laptop while creating these type of discs

Step-By-Step to DVD Media - 3 DVD single layer discs required

1.) Place your blank DVD media into the drive.
2.) Select the Windows Start Button
3.) Type or cut and paste "Recovery Management" into the search bar above Start Button
4.) The results will show up as "eMachines Recovery Management" Select this option
5.) Select Yes to the UAC warning
6.) Select "Create Factory Default Disc"
7.) When you are ready, select "Start"
8.) Swap out the media to the next disc when it asks for it/or opens the drive
(Be sure to read the message, if it fails you will need to try it again)

Step-By-Step to DVD Media - 1 DVD single layer discs required

1.) Place your blank DVD media into the drive.
2.) Select the Windows Start Button
3.) Type or cut and paste "Recovery Management" into the search bar above Start Button
4.) The results will show up as "eMachines Recovery Management" Select this option
5.) Select Yes to the UAC warning
6.) Select "Create Drivers and Applications Disc"
7.) When you are ready, select "Start"

Q.) What is the warranty?
A.) 1 year warranty from the manufacturer. Squaretrade also has extended warranties for 3 years. Normally on a laptop this price it is $49.99. However, I believe if you use the code WINTERSALE (until March 1, 2010) it gives you 20% off. So, final cost $39.99 *Use THIRTY30 for 30% off, so it's $34.99

Q.) How well is the performance of the T4400 Intel 2.20 Processor (Mavblues)
A.) Based on a scale of 0 - 1905, with 223 CPU's tested in the high mid range category, this scored a 1511 (seated #32 on the list). The highest in the high mid range category scored 1657. This places the laptop CPU in the top 15% best performers of this CPU range.

Q.) How much does this unit weigh?
A.) 6.17 lbs

Q.) How much heat does this unit put off?
A.) Almost none existent. It has a bottom mounted exhaust fan

Q.) Where is the ac power adapter input located for this unit?
A.) It is located on the left side of the unit, completely to the rear of the left side.

Q.) Does this unit have a webcam?
A.) Unit E725-4520 does NOT have a webcam.

Q.) Does this unit have a built in microphone?
A.) No

Q.) How much memory does this unit have?
A.) 3GB of memory, available physical memory 1.99GB (Graphics card is shared)

Q.) What type of memory does this unit have?
A.) DDR3-1066

Q.) How long does it take to restart?
A.) Around 55 seconds - 1 minute

Q.) What kind of keyboard does this unit have?
A.) Standard-size keyboard except, unlike an IBM-standard desktop keyboard, there is no dedicated area between the letter area and the numeric keypad area for arrow keys, home, page up, etc. As on most laptops, these special keys have been made smaller and fit into different areas.

Q.) What is the deal with the mouse/touchpad?
A.) The mouse/touchpad is centered under the letter area / centered on the space bar, NOT centered on the machine. It sits between the 25% - 50% area, off left center portion of the unit. The left and right click mouse keys sit flush with the touchpad. It uses the Synaptics software for the mouse/touchpad and has many adjustments, but is not multi-touch.

Q.) What type of CD/DVD drive does it have?
A.) Based soley on what I have on mine, it has a MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ890AS, 8X DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive

Q.) It says my hard drive is 250GB, why do I only see 199GB?
A.) Emachine has created 3 partitions. Full Factory restore - 12GB, Drivers and Windows Files - 101.98MB, and the main partiton 220GB

Q.) What Operating System does this have?
A.) Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)

Q.) Does the unit have a glossy screen/display?
A.) Yes, it does.

Q.) What is the Windows Experience Index on this unit?
A.) 3.3 Base score, Processor-5.6, Memory-5.5, Graphics-3.5, Gaming graphics-3.3, Hard drive-5.8

Q.) What type of ports or adapters does this unit offer?
A.) USB 2.0 - Qty 2, HDMI port - No, expresscard slot - No, Firewire - No, VGA port - Yes,

Q.) What graphics adapter does this unit have?
A.) Mobile Intel 4 series express chipset, a.k.a. Intel GMA 4500M (not 4500MHD) This is not a replaceable graphics card, has 64MB of dedicated memory, and then can use RAM for more memory as needed. Unfortunately, such shared memory is not as fast. It's a pretty low end card.

Q.) What type of Wireless adapter does this unit have?
A.) Broadcom 802.11b/g (This adapter does NOT support the faster N technology)

Q.) Does this unit have a card reader?
A.) Yes, a Multi-in-1 card reader. Secure Digital™ (SD) Card, MultiMediaCard (MMC), Reduced-Size Multimedia Card (RS-MMC), Memory Stick® (MS), Memory Stick PRO™ (MS PRO), xD-Picture Card™ (xD)

Q.) What type of battery does this have?
A.) 6 cell, Lithium Ion, expect about 2.5 - 3.5 hours of battery life. (Battery life is determined by many factors. Tweaking the power settings, remove unnecessary background programs, Adjusting display brightness, undervolting, etc can impact duration a battery lasts on each charge.)

Q.) Does this laptop also beep when the power supply cord is plugged/unplugged from the unit?
A.) Thankfully, No it doesn't have the warning beep when the power supply is changed.

Q.) How far does the display fold back?
A.) The display will fold back to a completely horizontal position with the rest of the unit.

Q.) What are the default software applications that come with this unit?

Q.) So how do I remove all that Bloat ware?
A.) http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/ is a good start. CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ also has a good uninstall application and disable at startup checklist.

Thanks for creating this thread.

I'd like suggestions for what software to get rid of. Can someone help me separate the wheat from the chaff?

Also I tried hooking this up to my panasonic plasma viera HDTV with a VGA-component cable and I couldn't get any video. Any suggestions for what I'm doing wrong?

You're Welcome.
Personally I remove the drive before even powering on. Install a new drive that I do a fresh install of the OS. Mostly for when I resell, I just pop in the old drive and its from factory new, plus no personal data floating around the drive. However this may beyond what you or others want to do. For those that re working off the Factory OS image a good start to un bloat your machine is decrappifier.

http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/
install Microsoft Security essentials for Anti Virus, Norton is Junk.
malwarebytes for malware protection. Update early and often
Install Firefox.com for browsing and install the add on WOT. This will help from browser hijacks. hope this helps.

I have a couple of questions:

If I create the 4 DVD's off of the restore partition, then feasibly, if I sell this down the road, I could just format and reinstall off of those 4 dvd's to get my system back to the factory config??
I really don't want to go through the effort of d/ling a legal version of Win7, and applying my key just to get rid of the bloatware. Is PCdecrapifier good enough to get all the crap off so it wont bloat the machine??

thanks
bama

IMO, it's easier to do a clean installation. You can get the ISO from digitalriver.com and use the instructions that I posted in the other thread. http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?p=27866500#post27866500

I guess I can always back up the restore partiiton on disk, then try the decrapifier.....
If I dont like it I can reformat and use the Win7 ISO....As for the download from Digital River...Were you talking about this post??

Bought one as a gift and just checking it over before passing it on.

Hitachi HDD
Matshita - DVD
Liteon Power adapter

I'm a bit worried that we all bought the same "deal" and have different parts. I've never owned and eMachine but I've always purposely kept my distance too...

Battery is fully charged so I disconnected power to drain battery 3x like someone suggested. As soon as I disconnected the power supply my screen dimmed. Any feedback from someone who knows more than I?

Mine:
WD HDD
Optiarc dvd

As far as the pieces-parts, most modern components are going to outlast their relevance. There are exceptions of course, but don't let the lack of uniformity worry you. If they all had HDD x and DVD y the odds of failure are probably about the same +/- a very small percentage.

Besides, most any equipment you buy (TV's, media players, monitors, etc...) may have different transistors, capacitors or other critical parts - even within the same product lines.

My advice is enjoy your new laptop and don't sweat the small stuff :)

Check your power management settings. More than likely it's just how they are configured.

Hi I'm ATTEMPTING to do the recovery discs but i'm pretty sure there's a problem, It burned fine but the "verifying" part is not going well. My DVD drive is making bad noises and the verification is stuck on 1% for 15 minutes now,

First of all, that's not normal is it? Secondly I probably screwed up by getting rid of crap first then trying the recovery discs. So is there anything I can do now or am I SOL?

I removed bloat wares last night, after that every time when restart computer, it pops up "Application Error;" window says

"Exception ERegistryException in module GRED.exe at 000377DC. Fail to get data for "BootCounter".

The computer is working fine except that and vertical scroll stop working. Other than that, nothing getting worse yet??

Run cccleaner, no help.

I think you can still go back to factory settings using recovery tools in the smaller partition. The back up on discs was for insurance against hard drive failure.

Best audio setting I've found and for those you haven't figured out how to adjust the sound: Go to Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, click Sound, double click Speaker Icon, click Enhancement tab, put a check next to Equalizer, highlight Equalizer, go to Setting towards bottom and click on down arrow, click on LIVE, click Apply, then OK. I'm no expert or audiophile, JMHO.

Hope that Helps!

For those that know, wouldn't it be a good idea to make a Restore Point asap if your system is running good?

I already created the restore disk of the win7, but I never did the emachines 3dvd one because I figured I'd put a clean win7 on it if I needed.

I ran the chkdsk scan and no bad sectors or anything..it's still running the full scan though...so I'll have to wait.

After thats done will the Win7 restore disk work where I took out all the bloatware..:scratchh:

Sorry, I've been sick for a few days and running on no sleep and cold meds....so i'm a little out of it..

Scratch AVG, too bloated and not as effective (in detection and removal) as the free versions of Avira, Avast, and MSE. Also get Malwarebytes Antimalware as an on-demand scanner for spyware and Spywareblaster for passive spyware protection. I like CCleaner for my XP and Vista computers, but it's not needed as much on W7 computers.

Thanks. I just restored in to original state. I think when deleting bloat ware, I deleted something I shouldn't have.

I always want to do clean install with the new computer if it come with OS cd, but this is not.

I am thinking of down load the iso OS and using the key under the laptop to run clean install. Can I use that key? Has anyone tried it yet? Of course, after I cloned the drive.

Great post from the deal thread, figures I share here.
Quote from supradealz View Post :
The CPU as of Aug 09 for a T4300 was around $80+. figure about the same for a T4400 now

$80+ CPU wholesale
$10 Win 7
DDR3 3GB ??
250GB HD ??
LCD
motherboard
Chassy - its not free
ac adapter
15.6" LCD (wholesale small order replacements are around $70-80, wholesale probably $25-40)
Labor
DVDRW
802.11b/g
packaging
development costs (notebooks dont design themselves)
transportation costs (from Hong Kong to Walmart - still probably figures a buck or so a unit)

BOM cost probably more on the lines of:
T4400 CPU -- ~$50/ea in OEM lots
Heatsink & Fan Assembly -- ~$10
Win7 Home Premium -- about $20
DDR3 3GB -- 1 x 2Gb & 1 x 1Gb, current contract price around $40 and $20
250GB HD -- contract price around $40
15.6" LCD panel -- contract price around $50
motherboard -- custom manuf for Acer, probably around $50 w/chipset cost
case/chassis -- probably $20 for typical injection mold
cable harnesses/wiring -- $5
ac adapter -- probably around $10/ea
DVDRW -- contract price probably around $20
Touchpad assembly -- around $10
802.11b/g -- contract price around $10
speakers -- $1/ea
packaging -- less than $10
development costs (amortized over this unit and many other similar models; die and tooling costs, etc) -- $10/ea
transportation costs -- usually figured per container, so probably $2-5/ea laptop

Basically, you need to realize that wholesale contract pricing is often actually HIGHER than the spot/gray market -- this is because you are paying for guaranteed availability of large quantities at a future date. This is why the OEM gray market exists -- when you order on contract you generally HAVE to take the parts, but if your orders don't match what you forecast then you end up selling them at a loss on the gray market just to recoup costs.

So, I would guess that Acer is probably spending over $400 for manufacturing this laptop. That said, the spot market for Core2 generation parts and chipsets is plummeting right now -- i.e. Core i3/i5 laptops are replacing them en masse. Acer is basically dumping this unit to Walmart to clear inventory -- who in turn is dumping it as a loss leader. They may also have potentially received a good deal from Intel on the T4400's and associated motherboard chipsets (as Intel is beginning to dump their remaining inventory as well). In the next few months I'd expect to see some really odd Core2 generation CPU's turn up as Intel takes whatever is left in inventory that may have defects in a single core or a single bank of cache, etc. disables features, and then marks them as some odd-ball OEM part just to be able to sell them (i.e. left over low yield parts).

Mine did that too the first time I tried making the backups. I eventually forced it to shutdown. Threw out that DVD and tried again. The second time it made all 4 discs no problem.
I went through 5 discs total. 3 to try the recovery discs, then 2 to try and clone the whole drive. All failed. It would either just freeze and do nothing (though the timer was still counting) or my DVD drive would start making clicking and whirring noises like it's trying to do something but can't.

Anyway I just took it back and exchanged it so hopefully this one doesn't have any problems.

Maybe I can possibly get some help in here, I have a problem with the wireless connection. I read this...

Q.) What type of Wireless adapter does this unit have?
A.) Broadcom 802.11b/g (This adapter does NOT support the faster N technology)

I have a linksys N router, is this why my new emachine only holds the connection for 3 minutes or so then looses it? Also, ive noticed when the laptop is closed, my desktop and my dell mini 9 connections are fine, the minute I open the Emachine all the connections drop, all 3 are wireless. any help would be appreciated. Scrolling should be enabled once you restart. If it doesn't, try downloading the drivers and reinstalling them again.

I have 2 of these. One with the LG drive DVD drive and one with the Matshita DVD drive. The LG is much quieter. Does anyone know which might be better drive overall? Also, does anyone know if it's a simple thing to exchange the two DVD drives? do you have to disassemble the whole laptop? I know that in some laptops it's a single screw that will release the drive.

Thanks!

EDIT: VERY simple to change the drives. There is a single screw inside the memory compartment that holds the optical drive in.

Still don't know which drive to keep though. Looks like the Matshita is more popular, but the LG is whisper quiet. I don't have any experience with LG drives..so i'm not sure what to think of it.

it will come with some charge, but not necessarily fully charged. The charge indicator light does not illuminate until the laptop is plugged in. On this laptop, it will be amber color if the battery is charging and turn blue when the battery is fully charged. There is no way to tell exactly how much charge the battery has left (unless the light is blue meaning it's fully charged) while the laptop is off.

Hope that helps!

Hi, Yes I was originally in on the S10 Lenovo Surplus refurb deal but backed out and bought the new one from Tigerdirect for an extra $24. ($212 after BCB). Received it 2 days after ordering. I became impatient after 4 days of no response from Lenovo. You guys still hanging in there after 10+ days is incredible. The refurb bit kind of scared me as well.

But actually the Lenovo was for my wife and the eMachine is for me. I like them both, but if I had to choose one, it would be the eMachine hands down. My wife likes hers because it's small and cute. :lmao: Personally my eyes start to hurt after staring at that lil' screen. (getting old I guess) But it has it's place, certainly easier to carry around. For the most part my laptops stay put, so I don't need the portability.

Yes, you can install Windows 7 without a key. In fact, Windows Vista and Windows XP SP3 discs allow to install without a key.

My instructions are fairly sparse and for a person who has installed Windows before. If you would like, use these instructions: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=428068

I followed the above notebookreview thread, and d/l the digitalriver X64 files. The install was for Win 7 professional, not ultimate - which is fine w/ me.
I installed the ISO to the primary partition, keeping the 2 original recovery partitions.

BTW, I could not get Win 7 control panel backup and restore program to recognize the 12gb 'recovery partition'. Apparently it doesn't back up non- NTFS partitions. Administrative tools>computer management on my emachines see the 12GB recovery partition but does not recognize the partition as NTFS, or any file format at all.

Acronis home does see it as NTFS and backs up all 3 partitions sector-by-sector. It seems you need something other than emachines recovery tools and windows 7 backup tools to clone the entire drive, if you want to backup your 'clean' install of windows and also keep the restore partitions.

Just had a scary moment. I've been using a cordless mouse and noticed my touchpad scrolling wasn't working (can't have both working at the same time I presume?). So I went to device manager and it said I needed to delete the synaptic driver and reboot. Did that. Unplugged the cordless mouse USB and rebooted thinking it would see the touchpad and reinstall the driver. That didn't happen so instead of DL the driver from eMachines (wasn't sure which one by reading posts here) I did a system restore going back 10 hours. During the restore it hung....froze for about 1+ hour I'd guess at the restoring registry part. The little circle thingy was rotating but it took forever. I did a system restore the other day and it was completed in just a couple minutes. Should I be concerned that it took so long? Is that normal or is that possibly an indicator that something is wrong somewhere - software/hardware? Growing impatient, I almost pressed the power switch - would that have screwed it up?

I'm having trouble with slow wireless internet speeds. Any help would be appreciated. I searched the thread for and everything mentioned previously didn't help.

When connected wirelessly to my router, my download speeds are really low. I connected to an unsecured network and tested that download speed at speedtest.net, and that download speed was 10x faster than when connected to my router's network. So, I think my wireless adapter is working fine.

I have the latest drivers for my router, but I don't know what else to do to improve the connection between my wireless adapter and the router. Any suggestions?

BENCHMARKING!

There has been a lot of discussion about performance gain (if any) on fresh installs versus manual cleanup. I decided to be the one that runs a benchmark on my stock (bloated) machine, and then after I cleaned it up a bit. I need someone with a clean Windows 7 Professional install to run this program as well so we can compare numbers.

This is the free program that you will need to download to run a benchmark:

http://www.passmark.com/download/pt_download.htm

Choose the 64 bit version (64-Bit 12 MB, Build 1012) It is very easy to run and is self-explanatory. Just skip the two errors that come up during the test (no Direct X10 card and no cd in drive).

You will eventually end up with a Passmark score.

I ran the benchmark test on battery power (unplugged) and did not alter the power management settings from factory specs.

My score on a brand new machine with only a few windows security updates: 621.9

My score after I cleaned a lot of the bloat with Revo, ran disk cleaner, ccleaner, installed Avira free virus scan (disabled for benchmark test) and defragged the hard drive: 633.2

I will be trying avast free antivirus next to see if it is lighter to run.

I also have some boot up and shut down times:

Bloated = 52 secs to boot up and 12 secs to shut down.
Cleaned = 39 secs to boot up and 8 secs to shut down.

I marked the time of boot up when I heard the beginning of the windows tune. I marked the time of shutdown when the light on the powerbutton when off.

HAVING SLOWER DOWNLOAD SPEEDS?? READ THIS:

Two things helped to get this computer up and running at normal speeds on the internet:
1) you should go the manufacturers Web site of your wireless router and download the latest drivers for your computer
2) (sorry i am at work right now and can't guide you through windows 7) But there is a setting in internet connections area that once Windows 7 recognizes your wireless router you should enable it.
After I did these two things my downloads speeds increased 8x. (Back to speeds i had on my previous computer)

Hope this helps at least some people.

thats the post but unfortunately i cant figure which setting he is referring to, i consider myself a somewhat knowledgeable user but cant find any setting that can affect the speed.

when doing the clean install of windows 7, did everyone format all the hard drive partitions and merge them? im assuming there was one partition created for the 9+ gigs of recovery data. if we burned these recovery disks, we could clear that partition right and merge it with the primary drive?

Bought one as a gift and just checking it over before passing it on.

Hitachi HDD
Matshita - DVD
Liteon Power adapter

I'm a bit worried that we all bought the same "deal" and have different parts. I've never owned and eMachine but I've always purposely kept my distance too...

Don't worry about the different parts. All the big builders (Dell, Acer, HP, etc.) normally use different vendors for the main components like the hard drive, DVD drive, memory, AC power adapter, battery, LCD panel, etc. in the same model.

I think all you have to do is left click the wireless icon on the bottom right and choose your network and click connect. Then it should prompt for a password ... hope that helps

Yep, and if your network SSID is hidden, you just need to go into Network and Sharing Center, "Setup a new connection or network" and manually connect to a wireless network. Then you can put in all of your info and it'll work just fine.

MSE is the anti-everything from MS better than Norton. I just got step-up 2010 model from Gateway it comes with Blue-Ray. Very quick after removing Norton Internet Security 2009, what a waste. Since these are really ACERS I also have ACER Netbook, ACER top of the line well series 75xxx 17.3 laptop huge got that for the wife. But that's no different than my Gateway 15.6 with B-Ray. Same drivers for 802.11N and 10/100/1000 gig NIC. Anyway I had removed Norton crap and rebooted it.

Installed:
MSE 64-bit
Google Chrome
Flash Player
Tune-up Utilities 2010
IOBIT Smart Defrag
IOBIT Advance System Care Free then turn that into Pro with license
Now if you want to get fancy you can add the logo, name brand, website support using the free tweak tool called Tweak Power Pack 2009 then go under misc then OEM there you can add your logo and such. It's a free program now don't how long though.

One thing about these ACERS and Gateway they sure pickup the 802.11N right off the bat. I use IPV6.

Free HDD size will vary ACERS (Gateway and emachines) uses hidden partition for OEM recovery an etc. 100MB. Whatever you do don't remove it. If you're going to install Windows 7 Ultimate make sure you delete two partitions on drive 0 but not the OEM partition.

Yeah, I spent over 2 hours on the phone with verizon internet tech support, we tried that over and over again. I connected it to the internet with the ethernet cable and let the verizon people take over the computer online and they tried a bunch of stuff too but there was no place for us to put the security key. My husband had put the wrong one in when he was setting it up and we could not find anyplace to change it. They were able to get the wireless set up with an unsecured connection but I definitely didn't want to leave it that way. I ended up restoring the computer to factory settings and as soon as that finished it asked if I wanted to connect to a wireless network. Then I was able to put the right code in. It was a really weird experience though. Thanks for responding, I don't know if I have enough posts yet but I'll try to rep you both :)

Hi, my bf and I picked up this laptop and are trying to install XP on a separate partition. We got it partitioned and have a legal XP install disc. The disc starts the Windows setup but stops after several minutes and indicates to run chkdsk /f. I found some stuff on another website about XP missing some drivers. Is that what I need to do? Install additional drivers on a new install disc? Thanks in advance!

could be that the XP disk is not slipstreamed with SATA drivers to support the SATA interface connected to the hard drive in the emachine

I followed the steps for Windows 7 ISO, burned it to a DVD and I can't seem to boot from the DVD. I changed the boot order via F12 but then the computer just loads as normal.

Tried, F2, bringing the CDdrive up to first position via F6, hit f10 to save and close.

Then re-started and it still went directly into windows though there was a DVD in the drive

I then restarted again pressing F12 and same thing.. Did not boot from disk. Any other suggestions? Thanks

F2 to go to BIOS. At Boot section, hit F6 until the cd drive up to top. F10 to save and get out.

maybe the dvd is not ISO for some reason. My first dvd wouldn't boot either.
Click on ISO file and use Windows Disc Image Burner to create ISO DVD.
When you boot, watch for the choice to choose the DVD disc.

Thanks, being a total amateur I think you are saying there was something wrong with the disk. You are probably right, because I called tech support and he told me 1) He was going to send me the recovery disks 2) There might be something wrong with the partitions which is why F12 was not accessing them 3) He made me read out what happened when I pressed F10 and whatever it was, was wrong.

He then suggested I restore from the emachine recovery program which I did, but the dvd was still in the drive so it used that and then used DVD 2 and 3. I have no idea what is happening or if my laptop is ok and the partitions that he is referring to are ok or not:) Not sure how to check all the sectors on the HD.

Hi Amy,

If it ever happens again and you need to setup a new connection:

Start/Control Panel/Network & Internet.
Network & Sharing Center
Set up New Connection or network
Manually connect to a wireless network
Enter all your network info (case sensitive)
Check the box to connect even if network is hidden

You should be all set.

That's strange.

Did you down load from the link on wiki (W7 64)? Did you dl the code also to remove ei.cfg file?

Why F12? I don't recall have to press F12. After used F6 to bring up cd to first position, F10 to save, get out. Then go in again to make sure cd boot on first. Get out. When I restart computer, watch for the choice for CD, enter right away, otherwise it will boot up the window.

No, I made the recovery disks from the e-machine recovery management section. When I did this and used it via F2/etc etc it worked ok but still has the bloatware that the technician says cannot be removed, like netflix and Ebay.... Did anyone install Office 2000 on this and get their Word app corrupted? All my other office apps like Excel, Access, PPT, launch fine. Just the Word app crashes, looks like the normal.dot file got corrupted, even though I renamed it, copied over the normal.dot from another computer, Word still crashes on me so I gotta do the whole Run>winword.exe /a route to get it to launch.

So far though the laptop runs good ('cept for the hard drive sound click) How can I tell which brand I have? I looked in DVD properties and it just reads Slimdvd drive or something. Can't tell the LG or Mashita brand.

I tested the acronis tib file by booting from the dvd and installing on the emachines, wiping the contents and reinstalling the 3 partitions.
I have not tested the recovery managment discs.

What version of Acronis Home did you use? I tried 11, and it would just hang at bootup. I even tried changing the SATA settings in the Bios in case it was a controller issue, but no luck. I figured 11 doesn't support this specific hardware (first time ever that Acronis won't boot for me).

Also, Windows Update installed new Synaptic drivers few days ago, this is the first time I booted the laptop up since this event, and my touchpad is no longer working, so be careful with those drivers.

Thanks for offering some data on a clean installed machine.

The score variability might be due to heat if you ran the tests consecutively

WOW! So you managed to get 100pts better than me. That is amazing. I wasn't using Microsoft Security Essentials but I had my virus program disabled. What we need now is one more person with a clean install to verify these high scores on their machine. The clean install really appears to make a difference.

I just got this thing on the net....Very fast....
Downloaded Passmark and ran it once with a score of 785....
This was after a fresh install of Win 7 Home Premium, and only FF and Passmark on the machine....

Very nice....

Yes, You need to add the ICH9m AHCI Sata driver to your slipstreamed disc (nlite does this). I did this for my XP install and it flew.

I'm sure i can find it, but just wondering where you got the files(sata drivers) for slipstreaming. TIA

No, you do not, BUT I would recommend you do for two reasons:
1. Verify your DVD burner works.
2. Have a backup set of the DVDs, just in case one set goes bad.

There are (at least) two different LCD panel "brands":

1) SAMSUNG SEC3046
2) LG/PHILIPPS LP156WH1-TLA3 (also used in the HP Pavillion DV-6)

On my particular machines:

1) The Samsung panel is very good: nice rich, warm reds. Better than the slightly bluish reds of the Acer Aspire One 532h, and much better than the much bluer/bad reds of MSI X340. Blue red = pinkish red. The difference is caucasian skin looking warm/normal vs looking pink.

2) The LG is even better! Very rich reds, making the Samsung's look bluer/pinker in side by side comparison. Netflix.com's red background is a good place to see this.

That said, though different "brands", the panels may actually be made by the same manufacturer, such as CMO or AOC. Both LG and Samsung contract out some of their LCDs. The differences I am seeing could be entirely due to factory calibration. They may be the exact same hardware.

Also, for those of you who have installed Windows XP, i am having a terrible time trying to get the broadcom wireless working. The driver install hangs and freezes everything and only a five sec push will shut the system down. I've tried several different ways to install including a reload of xp. I even set up a dual boot with win7 ultimate and the wireless works fine on that. Has anyone gotten the wireless to work on XP and if so, what is your driver version and date in the broadcom properties?

Has anyone tried transferring files over a network? I'm new to Win7 and right now I am trying to copy some stuff from my desktop (running on Win XP) over to this laptop. I am getting either really slow transfer speeds (<50kb/s) or sometimes the transfer won't even work (says there's a problem accessing my other computer, check to make sure I am connected to my network). I did a fresh install of Win7 ultimate if that helps at all.

I use to be able to transfer files without any problems in XP. Again, I am new to Windows 7. I tried looking at the network settings, and making sure to allow file sharing and anything else relevant. Still having problems transferring files..

I have a question concerning the Win7 / Clean Install process..
Can it be performed on other machines that came with a valid copy of Win 7 on them???
I got in on the HP 6247c deal and want to do the same thing I did to the laptop..
I know I can't use the SLP/SLC way of doing it, but can I use up one of my activations by starting off with a clean install and using the key on the bottom??

thanks

I would let windows update install the OS updates and then look for all of the optional hardware updates and do them. Then compare driver versions in the device manager to the emachine driver site. You don't have a camera so obviously you don't need that. You might not want to install any of the drivers from emachines and just use the win7 native drivers. In win7, i did update the Broadcom wireless driver and noticed no real increase in speed from the native drivers. The win7 update site should provide all the needed driver updates for your hardware.

Oh, you might want to install Launch Manager from the Application list from emachines. This will control the the touchpad on -off and the wireless on-off buttons next to the power button.

Well, i thought i had it. Forgot to install Launch manager. I had a clean device mgr for a second when launch installed but then it turned yellow again. Uninstalled Broadcom and on restart it freezes xp as the broadcom wireless hardware is found. This is getting to be a real beach! Maybe I'll try another xp reload and install launch mgr first before installing broadcom drivers, but i'm thinkin that won't work either.

Comments anyone?? Is your wireless working in XP???

Anyone try to do a fresh install using the tutorial from notebookreview? I'm having trouble getting my windows key on the bottom of the laptop to work. I used that key to install when windows asked for it while installing, but when I got into windows and went computer>properties it said "3 days until automatic activation. activate windows now."

I tried installing the acersys certifcate and it didn't work.

I then tried doing "slmgr -ipk VQB3X-Q3KP8-WJ2H8-R6B6D-7QJB7" <--thats the OEM SLP key
and then tried installing the certificate again and it worked. It said windows was activated instead of the 3 day notice above.

Is that what I was supposed to do? I'm guessing that "slmgr -ipk" command changes my key to the oem slp one. So, I tried doing "slmgr -ipk [the key under my laptop]" to change the key back, and now I get the 3 day notice again....do I have a bad key or something? I've double checked to see that I typed it in correctly so many times...

the oem is already activated and the label key has to be activated and that is where/why you get that 3 day notice from.. stick with the oem key :)

I've read all of this thread as well as the deal thread, downloaded the latest driver from Netgear (wgr614v5) and I'm still running (more click crawling) extremely slow.

I tested my internet speed via CNet and my eMachine averaged 575 kbps. I ran the same test on my MacBook and averaged 4100 kbps.

Surely there is something simple that I'm missing? Am I a complete retard or just slow?

Please be gentle.

I trust the Hitachi HD more (had better read speed) then the WD in the other one, but I didn't know the WD 2500BEVT (little info on it) is the blue series in which case it's a keeper too..

Well, we computer geeks (myself included) like to do clean installs to squeeze every once of performance we can get. Not totally necessary if you are new to it. It is time consuming and a bit complicated if you have never done it. I setup a couple of these for friends and what i did was removed any program associated with Nortons by going into control panel and add-remove programs. The norton add remove screen will pop up behind the other, so look for that.
You can remove all traces in the registry with programs mentioned in the other thread. Again, not really necessary. I installed the free Microsoft security essentials which integrates well with Win7. If you want a bit of extra protection, i like Superantispyware. Again a free download. I run it every so often and it will remove cookies also. I have seen it remove things that some anti-virus programs fail at. There are other programs out there as well. Hope that helps and i'm sure others can chime in.

No need to do a complete reinstall. As others have said, go to add/remove hardware and get rid of all 60 day trialware, including Office. Definitely get rid of all McAffee and/or Norton.

I use Ad-aware and CCleaner, which you can download for free on CNET downloads.

If you're really green on this stuff, go to CNET and download PCDecrapifier, and it will dump all the crap for you without any issues. Once that's done, you can delete PCD. I prefer as little as possible software on my systems.

As far as battery life - I like to max out my performance, but also not kill the battery (I prefer high performance versus balanced - why spend money on a faster machine only to slow it down to save power?). I turn the screen brightness down all the way, then kick it up one notch. Seems to be plenty, and there's no larger draw on the battery than the brightness (and running the DVD drive, but how often do we use that)? Just right click on the battery and go to performance options. Choose high performance on battery, but then manually lower the screen brightness with your function key and brightness key.

I ran PCD off a SD card (or usb thumbdrdive) so didn't have to install it in the first place!
Of course i also had my CPUID and CORETEMP and CCLEANER and other fav progs freshly downloaded from another machine on there as well.. play some of the games to see if you like them. I removed them - I don't like wild tangent
emachines screensaver you don't really need
I kept windows live essentials because I will use the mail program
I would go into start > run > msconfig > startup
and uncheck anything adobe, emachines, windows live
no sense having that stuff run in the background, but you can leave the programs there if you need them and run manually.
you could stop the HD realtek because you can run it from the control panel

I did a clean install so am repeating some of this from memory, any additions/corrections welcomed. (what was identity card?)

Thanks for all the help guys! I wil do all that you guys suggested without doing the clean install as it is a little too complicated for me. My main thing is to get rif of all the unecessary free trial stuff and keep this machine as zippy as possible. Also, lovin the machine so far, no problems whatsoever :)

It's not an answer to data rates over a network, but an easier solution might be to use a USB data transfer cable.

I did. Like you, first I tried the key under the laptop but it didn't work. I went ahead to install and it gave 3 days.

Called MS activated phone (I am at work and don't have it with me. It is on cd. If you want and can post later today), and they gave me the key over the phone. Whole process only took about 5 minutes.

Well, i should have read back on the other forum. Many thanks to fido14dido over in the other discussion for posting a link to a Broadcom driver that works in WinXP. Here is the link again (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?swItem=ob-79286-1&lang=en&cc=us&mode=3&)

I'm glad you found the solution you needed. So many posts, but was it to install an older broadcom driver that was the solution?

btw... Are more of these notebooks still available at B&M Walmarts? Has anyone bought one recently? thanks

anyone know if a hard drive swap between 2 of these notebooks would work without any problems? I have had a hard time getting one that's of good quality.. right now i have one with a scratch on the screen and another with a hard drive that makes the "click, click" sound of the heads parking quite often. This is my 4th and 5th unit...i'm tired of going back to the store to get these things straightened out. I see that the registration key is universal Acer for this model... is the serial information stored in the bios or on the hard drive? FYI, they're both WD drives of the same model.

regarding the "click, click" sound that you've heard. It's hard to describe, but is the sound a clear strong click noise or more of a soft click sound every 5-10 seconds or so for a period of time? I have had that too with several laptops in the past, and I have always wondered what the sound was. I am thinking maybe it is a normal monitoring of the SMART feature, which monitors the health of the drive. If so, then there should not be any worry.

Hey guys -

I have a small problem that I was hoping someone could help me out with regard to importing IE favorites from where they are saved in the body of a message in my yahoo email. I have all my IE favorites saved in my email. The problem is that they are not in an attached .htm file that IE 8 will recognize and import. I thought maybe I should copy and paste all the favorites and create a .htm file but I am, unsure how to do this...can anyone please shed some light.

TIA

This computer comes with 3 partitions. The first is a recovery partition, about 10GB. The second is the boot partition, about 100MB. The third, about 220GB, is the c drive.

I made all the backup & recovery DVDs. Do I get the same functionality from them that the recovery partition provides? To be specific: can I delete it.

eMachines won't give me a straight answer.

Also, its registration page fails when I 'submit' my application, 404ing me. This has happened twice.

whether it is legal to do so [after, of course, I wiped Windows7 from the eMachines].

Yeah, it's a "click, click" sound that happens when the computer is idle...i'm pretty sure it's the hard drive heads parking themselves in order to protect the disc in case there is a sudden jarring of the laptop. It also saves power. This info is from a google search for WD hard drive clicking...yes, it's probably normal..but i'm not sure that it should happen so often. it's really annoying while watching a dvd or just having it on a desk sitting idle...(it seems like a hard surface like a desk amplifies the sound)...i'm not so worried about it...but hoping that WD comes out with a firmware update to fix the insane frequency of this happening...anyone else have any thoughts? Hope this helps...

On my E-machine I have LCD panel 156AT01-A01, I assume manufactured by Samsung. I noticed that my display is not as bright as some of my other laptops. I have to set the brightness to around 80% for reasonable viewing. If I run it at 40% or 50% it seems too dim for my eyes. I compared it to some of my other LCD (non LED) laptops and it doesn't seem as intense or bright. I also turned down the contrast a notch or two so the display seems slightly better (less dull).

Does anybody else here notice their LCD display as not being bright enough? At 100% brightness the display is bright enough - just seems a little weak at the lower values.

Thanks for your info thhowl. It appears then that this is normal for the Samsung LCD displays being used in this particular E-machine. I am surprised that no other people have mentioned this or commented on this post or the other thread in regards to the lack of brightness level for the Samsung panels. I am guessing E-machines shipped out less than half using the Samsung LCD panels.

I am having few problems regarding the install of iDeneb install

I tried to install hackintosh twice but I am stuck with two different problems

1. After I install iDeneb, the computer restarts and boots into the OS (and there is 3 window loop) as said by engimaisdead's tutorial. But when I restart the computer, there is no F8 key or does not give me any option to start a command prompt - the lappy boots directly to OS

2. During my second install, I was able to get the command prompt and type all these command
a) /sbin/fsck -fy
b) /sbin/mount -uw /
c) touch /var/db/.AppleSetupDone (note the period before the "A")

hi folks sorry for the dual post, but i figured i should post this here as well in search of help:

ok, so I did a clean install last night (my 1st one ever! self-pat on the back). One thing i wanted to note is that the product key on the bottom of my laptop did NOT work, but i used the OEM SLP key in that link and it worked. Everything was wiped out (i guess that's the point eh)

One thing though, how do I get back the following things? I'm pretty sure someone mentioned these were important to keep:

eMachines Power Management
eMachines Recovery Management
eMachines ScreenSaver
Identity Card
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver
Intel Matrix Storage Manager
NTI Backup Now 5
NTI Media Maker 8
Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader

Please help!!!! Thank you

OT mode on... Can anyone direct me to a hackintosh thread or wiki for this dual boot option? How well do the kb functions translate to a macbook kb?

OT mode off.

So how many different LCD displays are there for this eMachine?

LCD displays in this are made by Samsung, and LG-Phillips or LG Display.

bought this for my wife 3/3/10 mostly as a result of the great coverage here.
i made the partition disks and the driver disk
i have been bit by the black screen of death.
i am unable to get into safe mode
i would like to know if there is any way to back up the HD before restoring factory set up using the disks.
any help would be greatly appreciated including an alternative to restoration.
thank you

Did you read the page previous to this page where:

just now, the screen never turned on, during or after boot. had been hybernating.

EDIT: <IGNORE>have my power button set to hyb. so, with screen off, but machine on, pressed it again to shut er down , and again to start again. still no screen.</IGNORE> my button was actually set to sleep (forgot I did a fresh Win7 install since setting it)

i pulled the battery and held power button 5 seconds. it's working again.
scary.

Is this possibly your issue too?

Can you get to a startup screen offering to boot from the last good configuration? Maybe F8? Did you accidentally turn the LCD off via a function key combo?

I often pull a drive to make an image on another computer. If it is a WD HD you might be able to use their Diag Tools, or you could use Acronis's drive imaging program? Sorry I can't offer more ideas.

LOL. I was updating the BIOS on my laptop last night and it hung on the Windows 98 splash screen. I was bugging out, man. I tried shutting it down by pressing the power button, but I was unable. I had to remove the battery to restart it. Luckily, DOS didn't load completely and execute the autoexect.bat that was in the flash drive. I guess it hung because I used a very old version of DOS.

no that was not my issue - lcd was on. i have noted your suggestions in case anything else happens as far as hard drive backup or imaging. thank you very much for your reply

it appears that my biggest problem was impatience
after spending 40 + min. finding and getting registered for this forum as well as writing my problem the computer sat doing absolutely nothing but showing a blank screen. then it started looking for problems and indicated that it would take time. i left it there over night and it solved the problem on its own. i awoke to the windows screen.

i have since backed up everything both ol and on disk as well as set a new restore point.

thank you again for taking the time to read the problem and offer some possible solutions.

Same here. Can someone clarify #2 for me? Thanks.

No, I don't understand either point there.

1. If you go to the website for your router, you can get router firmware, not a driver, and not certainly any driver for your computer. This makes no sense.

2. I entered my WPA2 key in my laptop and I was on the net at full speed. You should not change any settings manually. I cannot think of anything that would bet set up "wrong" in Windows 7 by default so as to throttle the internet speeds to 1/8 th the normal speed. Why would MS do that?

Unless this person has more evidence I suggest moving on. Maybe that doesn't sound nice, but we need more facts before screwing up our router, drivers, and networking settings trying increase something that is probably working correctly to begin with.

I've got the broadcom 802.11g network adapter with driver ver5.30.21.0 (driver assembly date 9/30/2008 (clean install of win 7)

If you go to settings>network connections>wireless network connection you will see 3 boxes near the bottom. Click on "Properties" (not the "wireless properties" above it), then click on "Configure" under the Broadcom network adapter box.
Click Advanced tab and move down to IBSS54g(tm)Mode. Mine was set at "802.11b Only".
I tried switching it to 54g - Auto. Also tried 54g performance mode.

It did not make a bit of difference in my connection or d/l and u/l speeds. I'm using a refurbished linksys modem and a Comcast supplied Netgear WGR614 v8 wireless router. The speedtest.net result are about 20mbps d/l 4.25mbps u/l 10ms ping to a nearby server with either 802.11b, 54g performance or 54g - auto selected.

According to what I've read it may make a difference connecting under certain conditions to a specfic router. Maybe worth an experiment.

on a separate note, do you think the bios could be modded -- see here
http://forums.mydigitallife.info/archive/index.php/t-7033-p-15.html

if so, could some more memory be allocated to video, or would that be impossible on this motherboard.

gergev, my understanding, from a quick google (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/network/p70008/en/props.htm#toc_71) is that the IBSS setting (not the BSS setting) has no affect when using a router/access point, but is rather for ad-hoc networks, computers directly networking with each other.

This would explain no change occuring, and getting 20Mbs even with it off. (802.11b is 11Mbs tops)

I tried Ubuntu 9.10 and it seemed to work fine, but I did not install, I just booted from the CD and picked the Try It option.
Maybe if you used an older distro it would have issues with the graphics.

I'm having trouble with slow wireless internet speeds... Any suggestions?

My previous laptop had no wireless adaptor. I used a USB adaptor with an external antenna. I attach it with a 6-foot USB cable and mount the adaptor on a bookcase as high up as I can get it. I connect with both adaptors. The external gives me a much stronger signal. I just bought a 9-dbi gain antenna ($4,99 + $2.68 shipping from Eforcity through Amazon - cheaper than buying it at Eforcity directly) which should improve bandwidth more. (The antenna supplied with the adaptor has +2dbi gain.) My computer has the Atheros network hardware, both wireless & Ethernet.

I tried Ubuntu 9.10 and it seemed to work fine, but I did not install, I just booted from the CD and picked the Try It option.
Maybe if you used an older distro it would have issues with the graphics.

I use Slackware, updated daily. I downloaded the current source from x.org and built - that works.

Hello all,
I recently purchased this laptop...never had a laptop before. I know I need a router so that I can get to the internet. I have a desktop computer with a modem. Does the router connect to the modem? Is there a certain type of router I need? I really appreciate your help. Thank you!

Internet --> Modem --> Router --> Local Network of Computers (including wireless computers if router has wireless)

You need a router that, in addition to a wired connected for your desktop, also broadcasts wireless for your laptop.

Buy the router that is currently in the front page. I owned the T-Mobile branded version of that router and it is great.

So far the eMachines laptop works great. But 50% of the time when i shut down the computer and restart it the next day, I lose wifi connection. The laptop system shows excellent connection, but says limited access. I disconnect and reconnect, refresh but no go. The troubleshooter tells me to reset the wireless network so I just unplug my Linksys Wireless G router and then the connection is established again. But it's a hassle.

So far I noticed this happen on both this eMachine (Atheros/Broadcom) and my Toshiba Satellite (Vista). The only laptop that doesn't have connection issues is my wife's Acer netbook (XP) which also has Atheros/Broadcom.

Any suggestions as to the culprit. Again, I can connect to the internet fine with all the machines, it seems only when the Toshiba is powered on and it searches for the wifi connections that it interrupts both the hard-wired and wifi connections. Is it my Toshiba, my Linksys router?

Can someone report clearly that they have had success with the latest driver at the Synaptics site, version 7.5? (the machines comes with version 7.0)

Has anyone gotten multi-touch to work? (it appears to NOT be a multi-touch pad -a hardware limitation- as the Mood Graph utility doesn't reflect it.)

Heads up:

This AC adapter "should" work for our lappy's (as a replacement):

http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?sduid=893440&t=1954382

Get the one that says "30W ACER Aspire".

$7.99 after coupon, free shipping.

I picked one up.

No guarantees, but the specs are almost identical to OEM.

That one outputs half the wattage (19V x 1.58A = 30W, vs 19V x 3.42 of the OEM). Wouldn't less amperage output burn up the power supply?

Thanks thhowl -= I guess I should've been a little more specific. Range and distance from the router is more my problem then speed. I just figured if I was going to replace the card or get an adapter,I might as well upgrade to N (obviously for the router as well). Will I get that much better reception with this http://www.amazon.com/D-Link-DWA-642-RangeBooster-Notebook-Adapter/dp/B000GG5LWA/ref=sr_1_51?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1271108289&sr=1-51 (and does that install in the Pci card area?) versus getting the Intel® Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300?

Does N really extend the range over G, or is its only benefit doing computer to computer file transfer - like in an ad hoc network?

That specific card won't work. It's made for a slot our laptops just don't have.
You can go to ebay and search for "Intel 5100". This item number is one example: 370350434925
Here is another, slighly larger Intel 5100 card that should also fit: 270560416782
Note, I don't know those sellers and cannot vouch for them, I am just showing examples so you know what kind of card is needed.

The 5300 has spots for 3 antennas, but our laptops only have 2 antenna wires, so I don't know how that would work out or which wires you would attach where.
The 5100 card has 2 antenna connectors, same as the original, which makes it a much better drop-in replacement.
N should help mostly with transfer between two computers like you said, but N is also supposed to help with range. I just don't know how much extra you would get.
