I frequently go to 3 different Borders on the same day and nothing happens. I don't think any store's registers are set up to keep track of coupons like that, even though they say 1 coupon per customer during the time period.

I think you just had the unfortunate experience of dealing with a crabby employee. I worked in retail for almost a decade and I'll never for the life of me understand why employees give customers a hard time over coupons - if you can make them happy and the register will let you apply it, why bother arguing? You get paid the same no matter what and most of the time the managers will agree to just accept it anyway.

Hmm, I really don't know what to tell you, unless the registers are more sophisticated in California than Michigan. (Very possible.) I have consistently used the same coupon in three different stores on different days during the coupon's time period and never had a problem. The last two that were 40% off I used 4 times (2 in 2 different stores, 1 for each time period), and they did have the same barcode.

I'm moving to San Diego in August so I guess I'll be able to find out for myself if you're getting singled out for some reason.

But you know, it's not like they don't have different coupons all the time. They can't yell at you for using a coupon that works until 6/3 and then going back in on 6/4 with one with a different barcode.

But, your second paragraph only proves that some managers and employees really get off on giving people a hard time. Or else they were ignorant of the coupon, which is possible. They should know their own sales though.

Actually, if that store's manager or district manager, etc, is strictly enforcing the 'one coupon per valid promo period' part, then yes that employee can get in trouble.

For the first part, yes, an expired coupon won't work. The registers won't take the coupon code. (I know, 'cause once I accidentally handed the cashier an expired coupon that I had in my purse instead of the current coupon that was right beside it. :doh:)

For the second part, the cashiers and employees don't always know what coupons are out there. As I understand it, their home office doesn't always tell them. (I've asked my friend before to give me a heads up when they're going to have a good one *grin* but she told me that they don't always get a heads up about it :() So if they either didn't check their own emails, if they have a Rewards card themselves, or if other customers haven't used a coupon that day yet, then it's very possible that they just didn't know about the 40% one. (Of course, it's also possible that they did know about the coupon and were just being stinkers about it).

But in the interests of customer service, I agree that they should have at least just let you do a straight exchange since they were the same price. They did that once for me before at the store I go to, though it was a while ago. :dontknow:

Funny thing I was in the store with my mom today and we were both using 40% coupons. Everyone in the family uses the same reward account because that way the amount for Borders Bucks adds up a lot quicker. Well my mom didn't have her card today so I gave her my key thingy to use. So when I went to check out the lady states that they can only do one 40% coupon per account. The thing is that if it wasn't for the fact that it was obvious from my keys that it was the same account they'd have no way of knowing. So I just rattled off one of my e-mail addresses since I have multiple e-mail accounts with accounts associated with them. I have to wonder if there is any point at all in being such sticklers about these things.

Some cashiers are just like that. When I used to work retail, upper management made no restrictions as to how many times a customer can use the same coupon. In fact, they encouraged it. Older cashiers in my dept. made up their own rules. When I switched depts., no one cared. We just scanned coupons multiples times for our customers. That made us and the customers a lot more happy.

At the end of the day, all the coupons had the same barcodes, and we threw them away anyway.

Normally that's what I do, or I wait for a new coupon, but I just qualified for the personal shopping day and I wanted to get more than one book.

I tried it out on the website, and fwiw, the site takes the coupon off the highest priced book.

Nope. They are apparently "gold members" because of how much they spend.
