Who hosts your website and where do you register your domain? Happy or unhappy?

Host: 1&1 -- unhappy
Domain: GoDaddy -- happy

Westhost...and we are pretty happy with it...we are on a semi dedicated server with 19 other users.

I've used HostGator for my parents business for years. They've always been pretty good and offer lots of features.

Before that I used IXWebhosting. I have to think long and hard to find a company I would recommend less than IX. Compromised servers, HORRIBLE customer support, I can go on.

Dreamhost - cost me $10 for 2 years when I first signed up. They have this special every so often. Includes unlimited bandwidth, storage, sites, etc. Domain registrations are $10 each. I also use it as an extra backup for family pictures and videos - about 40GB so far. Great service, although uploading to them can sometimes be kind of slow (even with my 100MB pipe @ work, on the weekend).

Domain: Godaddy

Godaddy is pretty good...except that their website is terribly slow. It takes a while for pages to load, which can be a PITA when you need to navigate several layers in to get to an option.

I host my own website using Debian in a virtual environment. I may shove hosting on to my backup server, but we'll see.

Host: Lunarpages - dirt cheap and I'm running 4 sites off a shared server. Plus, I love their tech support, they really go above and beyond (I even tested it at 2AM when one site went down).

Domain: Godaddy - no real complaints about the service, does everything I want at a reasonable price although I HATE their site, it's way too bloated and flash heavy for a quick change when needed.

If you have shared hosting, do a reverse-IP lookup on your site sometime to see how many other sites are hosted on the same machine...
Godaddy apparently has over 1400 other sites on the same IP as one of my sites (explains why it slows down for no apparent reason sometimes)

Siteground also has this deal, which you can find on SD with a basic search. I like Siteground more than Dreamhost, but for the money it doesn't much matter which one you go with. In fact, go with one for a year and switch to the other for the next year.

Cool site. Holy crap on the godaddy thing though. I wonder if most of them are just parked or active? Still though, that's insane. I would request a new server or tell them you are leaving.

FYI: My siteground site for a measly $10 for a year only has 48 sites on it.

P.S. Don't know how accurate that site is though, as I seriously doubt Digg shares server space with any other site. Although it could be one IP that is routed to various servers.

I've used 1and1.com for the last 7 years. They've always treated me well and I rarely have connection or bandwidth problems. It used to be slower, but they've sped up in the last couple years.

Then
Domain: I used to use Network Solutions many years ago, and Register.com a while after that. Network Solutions was good, but incredibly overpriced.

Register.com was also very overpriced, and their control panel was broken (it was very clumsy to use, and often didn't save changes). When I asked Register.com to match GoDaddy's price, they refused and tried to scare me out of switching because GoDaddy's price was too cheap to have good service. I lost respect for Register.com when they e-mailed me after I switched, and finally offered to match GoDaddy's price if I switched back.

Hosting: I used to use Hostway, then 1and1 for hosting. Hostway was good at first, but about 5 years ago they started having a lot of downtime, massive e-mail outages (including one e-mail outage which lasted about a week), and other problems--not to mention, their totally incompetent customer disservice staff who requested my credit card number every time I contacted them for support. They refused to verify my identity any other way, but after a while I found out that they would stop trying to steal my identity and resolve my issue immediately if I opened 30+ duplicate support tickets with the opening line, "AS YOU CAN SEE, I AM OPENING THIS SUPPORT TICKET FROM MY CONTROL PANEL, AND AM THUS AUTHENTICATED."

1and1 was even worse--terrible customer support, absolutely HORRIBLE control panel and broken/missing features. Immediately after purchasing a hosting plan, we found out that we needed to upgrade to a better plan (classic bait-and-switch tactics) in order to get less restricted access to our account, just so we could figure out why our simple PHP website wasn't working. Within 2 weeks of purchasing we were able to conclude that there was no way we could deploy our site because they were using obsolete server software with a lobotomized PHP installation, and the restrictive (not to mention, glacially slow) control panel prevented us from effectively debugging our site to implement any workarounds. The server's performance was also very spotty; usually it was unbelievably slow, even when serving static content. We tried to get in on 1and1's 30-day "100% satisfaction guarantee" and when they refused, we had to go to the BBB to get our money back.

Now
Domain: GoDaddy
Hosting: Steadfast Networks (http://steadfast.net) - super-cheap, tons of features, excellent control panel, and complete DNS and subdomain control. You don't get a lot of storage capacity on the cheapest plan, but it's more than adequate for a personal site. You can host as many domains and databases as you want on your account, as long as you stay within the disk quota. Aside from having to watch out for a few administration pages that aren't HTTPS by default, Steadfast gives you the most bang for your buck.

Hosting now: Cookiehost (see deal here: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?sduid=92667&t=1945204 $5 for the first year) I have been with them over a year and am very happy with the service and uptime. Occasional downtime, but never for very long and they have great tech support. I've used HostGator and ANR Host in the past. HostGator was good for high-volume sites on a semi-dedicated server, but I didn't need that anymore. ANR was just ok - terrible support.

I've registered my domains with Domainsite for years. Happy with them.

Yeah, can't really go wrong with them and they regularly have discounts available. I'm not taking a risk on some smaller company as I almost got majorly burned by the Register Fly crapfest. My domains were in limbo for months and after many a phone call godaddy finally saved them!

steadfast is a good choice for a "smaller" (i.e. not millions and millions served) host, but watch the affiliate link, they aren't allowed here (i removed it in the above quote), and you've been around long enough to know that!

i might be using them today for a couple sites (love the sub-20ms latency from here to there), but i moved everything off hsphere-based accounts and servers when plesk (parallels) bought hsphere (psoft) from comodo...

another solid hsphere host is cartika (http://www.cartikahosting.com/clustered-hsphere-hosting/)

cpanel hosts are a dime a dozen, and most are worth about that (i.e. not much).... but knownhost is decent... http://knownhost.com/shared-hosting.html

note... these aren't cut-rate cram-1000-accounts-on-a-server hosts... if you want one of those, just use godaddy... 1and1 is ok.. but only if you're just putting up a static site (e.g. not running php/mysql-based apps).

if you have a site that sees a lot of traffic and you're running server-side scripting (e.g. php).. get at least a vps and stay off the ordinary 'shared' hosting plans.

Can anyone say anything negative about Hostgator?

Not me. I'm about to switch away from them but only because I need to get reseller hosting and their rates are a bit steep.

Here is the March pingdom report for one of my sites hosted at HostGator-
Uptime Downtime Outages Average response time
99.97% 0h 12m 59s 5 527 ms

When I started with them they had to do all of your DNS work by hand but they've since added that ability via their control panel.

Good to hear, they are the only major hosting company who no one speaks poorly of.

GoDaddy for registrations.

Dreamhost shared for low traffic/static/development sites.

Future Hosting VPS for dynamic (php/mysql) sites with high traffic.

I didn't find shared plan that would run dynamic sites well.... if there is one please fill me in.

dreamhost should allow all that, I know on my site i got like 6 or 7 subdomain's for off projects and friends. (subdomains are free) I think I also have a url forward or mask. The biggest complaint about dreamhost vs 1&1 is 1&1 has a phone number you can call. Dreamhost is only a ticket system so if shit is really farked up it might take longer to get fix.

I just transfer my domain to namecheap.

It allow up to 100 subdomain. I will use my router to update my IP to their site. It can do URL and masking.

I am going to use my computer to run my own website, forums and maybe shopping card. No need to depend on anyone else now.

I got my domain at Namecheap.

My current host is SpeedySparrow. Shared cloud hosting. I've had no problems with them and they always reply back to my emails fast. I believe they are a small company, but that's a good thing. Great customer service so far.

It depends on how technically-oriented you are. If you want to do it all through a web interface, I think GoDaddy supports URL forwarding and cloaking.

If you're not scared of editing a configuration file, you just need a host that allows URL rewriting via .htaccess rules.

Fluid Hosting (http://fluidhosting.com/) (who recently acquired Steadfast.net's shared hosting business) gives you complete control over your DNS records, so you can set up as many host or cname records as you want.

The URL cloaking feature (as I've seen it implemented by a few hosting companies) is just a frames website with one large frame.
