i didnt read them all,but out of the first few i see no true texans. there are no ya'll,s, over yonders or youonto's. i am a by god texan an we not only deserve our own thread, we deserve our own web-site http://www.state.tx.us/

and you should know how to speak or at least understand texan. her is yor guide: Texas Slang Translation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

George W. Bush will be bringing with him many friends from Texas, and for anyone not born in the Lone Star State, the Texan accent and the cowboy colloquialisms can seem a bit strange. Here is a guide to a few of the more colorful expressions they might encounter:

The engine's runnin' but ain't nobody driving
Not overly-intelligent

As welcome as a skunk at a lawn party
(self-explanatory)

Tighter than bark on a tree
Not very generous

Big hat, no cattle
All talk and no action

We've howdied but we ain't shook yet
We've made a brief acquaintance, but not been formally introduced

He thinks the sun come up just to hear him crow
He has a pretty high opinion of himself

She's got tongue enough for 10 rows of teeth
That woman can talk

It's so dry the trees are bribin' the dogs
We really could use a little rain around here

Just because a chicken has wings doesn't mean it can fly
Appearances can be deceptive.

This ain't my first rodeo
I've been around awhile

He looks like the dog's been keepin' him under the porch
Not the most handsome of men

They ate supper before they said grace
Living in sin

Time to paint your butt white and run with the antelope
Stop arguing and do as you're told

As full of wind as a corn-eating horse
Rather prone to boasting

You can put your boots in the oven, but that don't make em biscuits
You can say whatever you want about something, but that doesn't change what it is

That's a fur piece.
It'll take you awhile to get there

Don't worry 'bout the mule son, just load the wagon
just do your part and I'll do mine

Don't call him a cowboy, till you've seen him ride
Don't judge a book by its cover

She's been rode hard and put away wet
refers to an unnattractive, hard-looking woman

toad choker
a heavy rain

frog strangler
also a heavy rain

finer than frog hair
use anywhere you might use the word "fine"

rarer than hen's teeth
pretty darn rare

tump
to spill, as in "I jes' tumped over mah beer"

coke
Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Sprite, Mountain Dew, Big Red, etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some Texas Wisdom
Never slap a man who's chewin' tobacco.
Lettin' the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier'n puttin' it back in.
If you're ridin' ahead of the herd, take a look back every now and then to make sure it's still there.
If you get to thinkin' you're a person of some influence, try orderin' somebody else's dog around.
Never kick a cow chip on a hot day.
There's two theories to arguin' with a woman. Neither one works.
If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.
Don't squat with your spurs on.
It don't take a genius to spot a goat in a flock of sheep
Always drink upstream from the herd.
Never miss a good chance to shut up.
There are 3 kinds of people: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest of them who have to touch the fire to see for themselves if it's really hot.

I think drive through liquor stores are a bad idea
I don't own a belt buckle of any sort
I don't own cowboy boots, or a hat

The best thing about Texas, in all honesty, is not the landscape, the climate, the politics, the jobs, or the cowboys (lower case, not the franchise). It's the people. 99% will receive you with open arms. I have been through several states that are supposed to be visitor friendly but have had more fun and more experiences with Texans than with any other states' peoples. People are even friendlier in the airports (DFW is not an exception either). LAX and La Guardia (s?) both had very rude, pushy people everywhere I turned. People at DFW offered me a part of their newspaper, guys gave me their seats, just general overall niceness.

Texas. He11 Yeah!

That being said, I am a native Texan, so I might be biased. But please refer to my statements in the California thread. I am not so biased that I'd be unwilling to leave the state for Euphoria (aka San Diego).

I thought that at first too. But, I found many of them to be fake. They will offer you something to your face and then turn around and complain that you took the offering. The women would crack me up. 2 girls who hate each other passionately will walk up and hug and exchange numbers (with absolutely no intention of calling) and then walk away and say "I hate that bitch sooo bad". I would rather people not be fake like that.

That's a fact of life. That happens everywhere. 8itches are 8itches. Some of us just have big hair. :) Smile and tell the one who made the comment, "Birds of a feather... "

Personally, if I don't like someone I'm not going to hang with them regardless. Unless it's the boss or his wife or something like that. And I've worked for this man for 2 years and love him to death.

Well, we have a big state. Get off the prairie and into the Hill Country down near Austin and San Antonio.

Or take 30 west and head towards Abilene; right about where 100.3 (on a factory radio no modifications) cuts out, you'll find hills enough that the truckers are forced to stay in the slow lane going uphill and they have several exits marked for "emergency brake loss stops" on the downhill side.

Don't exit there unless you are having brake problems though, they all end in huge piles of gravel/sand that's there to stop you. (don't ask me how I know)

Yeah, I lived in Texas for 3 years. When I first got there, I couldn't believe the hospitality. But, what I found out is that many of them (not all of course) are fake about it. I witnessed my host family out there greet someone into their home and then talk extensively behind their back. This is the family that forced us to go to their Southern Baptist church. Oh, the torture!!

I witnessed quite a few women walk up to a girl they dislike and act like they are best friends. Then, they part ways afterwards and talk about how much they hate each other.

I can vouch for this as well. So I take it you did your time and got out?

Yup, moved in 1999 to Dallas area. Lived in plano for about 8 months and built a house in Rockwall east of Dallas. Downtown Dallas is work and has changed dramatically since we have lived here. Change for the better. So many high rise apartments opening.

Thanks, I have seen many new homes so far, including David Weekly. But those homes are pretty expensive compared to DR Horton, K Hov, KB Homes, Pioneer, etc. :(

Granted, DW homes come w/ a lot of standard stuff, but I don't really need all those free upgrades. Just out of curiosity, why do you say that? I've read bad things for just about all the big homebuilders, at least the publicly traded ones. So now I'm more concerned about location and floorplan rather than who built it. At first, the builder was the most important factor to me before I learned that pretty much all of them are high-volume builders who don't really put quality into their homes as some did back in the '60s and '70s. : \

So far, I've mostly looked at locations 76108 and 76135. I'd like to live near 76116 (Ridgmar Mall area) since it would put me in the middle of work (make $) and downtown (spend $), but like I said, no new construction going on there. And those new downtown condoes are way too expensive (price per sq. ft.), not to mention I probably don't want to deal w/ all that traffic.

Have you lived in FW for a while and do you have advice? I also work on the west side of FW, so that's why I moved to this part. I heard the SE part of FW is all ghetto, so that is def. not on my list.

I see. A lot also depends on who the manager of that community is. Some suck and some are not as bad. I don't know if by definition a real estate manager can be described as "great".

I liked the KB Homes floorplan I saw here in TX ("C series"), but the location was not the best.

I love Fort Worth...my favorite city in Texas and I don't live there although I do live in the same county. What a great place to live and there is always something happening.

Before you decide on a builder, check out the construction quality in the houses under construction. If you can find D. R. Horton homes in your desired area that you like, I would highly recommend them.

Pay special attention to the soil underneath the house that you buy. You don't want a heavy clay in your soil since during times of drought or heavy rains, the foundations tend to crack more easily in clay.

But, I just love Texas and I'm from California although I've lived here most of my life. Texas people are so friendly and helpful and although it can get miserably hot here, the rest of the year makes it so worthwhile.

Glad you enjoy it so much in FW and I'm sure since you're in Tarrant County, you get to still enjoy it quite a bit. Do you go to downtown (Sundance Square) often?

Thanks for the advice; I heard DR Horton builds a pretty good home, albeit "mass-built/cookie-cutter". The soil here is pretty hard compared to NJ, which probably explains why houses don't have basements out here.

I'm mainly looking for a new home b/c of its much better energy efficiency. Older homes might run up A/C bills into the $400/mo., whereas a new home of the same size might only be $150/mo.

Also, you have lead paint, asbestos, and related issues w/ older homes. :dontknow:

I'm mainly looking for a new home b/c of its much better energy efficiency. Older homes might run up A/C bills into the $400/mo., whereas a new home of the same size might only be $150/mo.

Also, you have lead paint, asbestos, and related issues w/ older homes. :dontknow:

Good point, but with older homes they have established shade, which helps keep the electric bill down. And lead paint and asbestos would be found on the inspection.

Older homes can be a huge financial risk, newer/quality real estate is a more stable choice for someone who may have life changes and need no move/sell get back $$ they put into a place.-Can you tell my Dh is a financial advisor/loan officer? :)

Yeah, they have larger trees, but I've still heard of their very high energy bills. Granted, after move-in, one can get energy efficent windows, doors, and A/C unit, which helps a bit.

Yeah, home inspection would find those other issues, but I don't know if I want to deal w/ it. I actually made offers on 2 townhouses when I lived in NJ. Both were built in the 1970s and both "failed" home inspection, so I was able to back out of those deals. Then I moved to TX and after bad exp. w/ the older homes in NJ, have all but ruled out old houses in TX. : \

Several of my coworkers went today (for those who had the day off) but I was too busy with other things, so I didn't bother hitching a ride. And my weekend is pretty packed so I don't think I'll get to go. Besides, I'm not a fan of fried foods, so I don't feel like I missed out much. Sure it would've been cool to see the acrobats, etc.

Since Texas is 30 minutes west of here, I have to share:

Bud Light presents: real men of genius
Today we salute you Mr. Way Too Proud of Texas Guy!
(Mr. Way Too Proud of Texas Guy!)
Men from lesser states may know their state's capital
But you, you know your state's bird, tree, and even reptile.
(Love that horny toad!)

You display your pride with your lone star tattoo,
Native Texan bumpersticker,
And contempt with any state that doesn't start with "Tex" and end with "Iss."

Sure, there are 49 other states in the union,
But they're smaller, wussier, and the people talk funny.
(Yankee wussies!)

So crack open an ice cold Bud Light oh lover of the lone star state
Because all that flag waving must've made you mighty thirsty.
(Mr. Way Too Pround of Texas Guy!)

I was browsing at a local B&N store (in downtown FW - Sundance Square, for those who are familiar) and noticed their Texas books section. I started thumbing through Fixin' to be Texan (http://www.amazon.com/Fixin-Be-Texan-Helen-Bryant/dp/1556226489/sr=8-1/qid=1165516876/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-9727996-3836133?ie=UTF8&s=books) (written by Helen Bryant). It is hilarious! And so true, from my 1/2 year of experience living here.
