EDIT: I found BlueHost.com has a 50% off for $3.95/mon (24 months, else $4.95 for 12) right now, from this link (http://www.webhostranking.com/coupons/bluehost-promo-price/). Looks like domain registration is free with the signup, as is free whois privacy. Thoughts?

I saw the GoDaddy.com domain discounts for post-July, to make it $7.67/yr.

But I can't settle on or find a deal on a host. I see conflicting information about Dreamhost being well-rated vs people having issues with them (i.e. perm account lockout w/out valid reason). And I couldn't get their "222" code they gave to LifeHacker.com to work either. I'd love to know if someone else has made that work in the last few days.

Else, what's my best deal out there? Setting up a simple site for my wife to get her started on a small business, it probably will not have a ton of traffic, and I can workaround limitations if the plan is very basic (i.e. don't have to have SSL/ecommerce, don't need source control on their side, etc).

Thanks VERY much.

Make a deal alert for hosting. Dreamhost should be fine for a starter host. Siteground has deals, but stay away from them. They monitor your files and if you so much as put an mp3 file on there they will basically say remove everything in 48 hours. In my case I removed some of the files, but they never specified all infringing files so they shut me off. Then they demanded $50 to turn my service back on or to even restore access to my files. Oh and forget about ever trying to sue them if it came to that, they're incorporated in guatemala or something. Scum of the earth.

There was a recent deal for stablehost which I signed on to, but it seems to be dead now.

I would look at what Microsoft has to offer they have a pretty complete solution for not much $$ or even free to start

I've been in the webhosting / web development industry for over 8 years now and I will say for a starter solution you cannot go wrong with these two companies.

For webhosting - Go with HostGator.
For a good domain provider - Go with NameCheap.com

Let me know if you have any questions and I will be glad to answer them for you via PM or forum.

I don't want to bump an older thread, but DO NOT host at GoDaddy. I've had problems with them from day one. I just switched to HostGator, and while it IS a pain to transfer, their service is a lot better.

I know this thread is a little old, but I am in the same boat at the moment--just trying to find some cheap hosting for a pretty minimal website.

BlueHost is looking pretty good (especially with the link the OP posted), but I haven't seen a lot of opinions on them. OP, did you end up going with BlueHost? Can you or anyone attest to how good/bad they are?

I like that they give you free WHOIS privacy--my last webpage did not include it, and I was contacted directly by people who had no business contacting me.

I put my business web site up on MS Live and am glad I did. I believe I just had to pay to register my url name which was about $15. If you can get a registration cheaper you can still use the MS Live site.

My only complaint is that the email set up is a little clunky, especially when someone emails from your site.

edit: nevermind, disregard.
