Anyone ever have a problem when they try to open a link in a forum, such as:

http://slickdeals.net/?t=216768&u2=http://www.buy.com/prod/Logitech_Quickcam_for_Notebooks_w_Built_in_Microphone_USB/q/loc/111/90145821.html

and find their browser won't find the site?

I have to always cut out the slickdeals url portion up to, but not including, the second http: in order for it to work.

I run WinXP.

Thanks for any help with this!

-Bill

It opened just fine for me. It was a webcam from buy.com

Why do certain links lead to a "Page not found" webpage? (http://forums.slickdeals.net/faq.php?faq=sd_faq_item#faq_sdlink_faq_item)

Why do certain links lead to a "Page not found" webpage?
If you installed an adblocker or Kazaa Lite, it will block certain links that this site uses. You can fix it by using the adblocker's settings to unblock the domains listed below.

bfast.com
linksynergy.com
qksrv.net
cc-dt.com
commission-junction.com

Almost all ad blockers use the hosts file so if your ad blocker doesn't have the option to unblock certain domains, you can fix it manually by editing the hosts file. Depending on your operating system the file will be located in different directories.

Windows 95/98/Me c:\windows\hosts
Windows NT/2000/XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Windows XP Home c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Linux /etc/hosts

Once you locate the hosts file, open it up with your favorite text editor such as notepad and remove any lines with the following:

bfast.com
linksynergy.com
qksrv.net
cc-dt.com
commission-junction.com

After that, save and close your browsers. The links should work now. If the links still don't work, make sure you are editing the hosts file located in the specific directory mentioned above.

If that does not work, try disabling your software firewall and any ad blocking programs.

Thanks for the tips TMK44.

The point that it's an issue with my hosts file is more than likely correct, I do use it to control ad servers.

I guess I need to weigh the inconvienence of cutting through these urls at Slickdeals vrs. letting the servers I've blocked deliver.

Again, thanks!

My host file doesn't contain any links listed in the faq, but I could not access any links that redirect to dell home or dell small business. Other sites seem to be OK, any ideas what's going on?

do you use windows? XP w/ service pack? Vista?

The above link doesn't work in IE or FF. I have both XP SP2 and Vista Ultimate in my pc and laptop, none worked. The bioshock deal from today's frontpage doesn't work either.

Security software installed: Spybot search and destory, spywareblaster, mcafee viruscan enterprise, comodo boclean and windows firewall.

Both computers are for home. Thank you for your reply, hopefully you can help me to sort things out, it's very frustrating to visit slickdeals right now.

Chances are one of your security software is blocking it, I would suspect McAfee or (most likely) Comodo, the rest are probably ok.

The problem seems to be caused by Spybot's immunization. When I undo all the immunization, all links work, now I just need to id which specific one caused me problem. Thanks for all the help, guys.

Strange, because I use Spybot, and immunization, and I do not see this issue in any of the 4 browsers I use.

Are you using version 1.5?

I wasn't, so I installed 1.5 - looks like they changed the way it immunizes since 2004, it now blocks quite a bit more aggressively, which causes things to fail.

Considering their files are encrypted in some manner, there isn't an easy way to adjust it, and i see no good way to manually fix that either at the moment, i'll look a bit more into it.

Thanks man. For now, I just undo all the immunization.

I wasn't sure if it's this particular one, but all my dell links do not work on slickdeals with spybot 1.5.1 immunization enabled.

Yes, Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5.x seems to have an extremely aggressive immunization model, which does not work properly with SlickDeals.net at this time
