I have noticed that some newer SD'er have borrowed avatar's from some of the "long time" SD'ers.

Is this practice allowed? Should I be worried that some one may take my little tribute to "Major Havoc" (Not that I would think anyone would...) be rippe..I mean Borrowed?

I know there are plenty of "Stock" Avatars on the site when you begin and they change as you gain in you post count.

But is there a rule or such on this?

I would sugest that custom artwork is the trademark of the creator of the avatar and should have the exclusive rights to it.

the only annoying part for me is i have started to recognize posters by their avatars. i rarely look at names anymore. so when newbies steal avatars its pretty confusing.

Someone used mine for awhile and it sucked! Glad she stopped. I also only look at Avatars rather than the names. I think it's easy enough to get one so people should GET THEIR OWN!

I got lucky, ScullyGirl and Oni Forever tuned my avatar up. I was too dark and you could not see much more than a black block.

In my case, it seems kind of petty to complain to the user although I don't really like it. It's mostly because like Jockable said, he thought he was reading a post from me. It seems more valid when the other members complain about it.

I just like having a unique avatar because I can quickly see my posts and pick up from where I left off, or in the lounge it is easier to associate some avatars instead of names, easier at a quick glance to see who posted.

I know my avatar isn't custom but when I see it in a thread I immediately think it is mine and it throws me off, plus I don't expect ppl to remember my but I sure someone will remember it when Carl from ATHF pissed them off on SD

Avatar are something there should be a law aganist stealing. Perhaps if slickdeals didn't offer stock avatars, people would relize that there are unique creations or acquisitions.

I would agree with the person who mentioned watermarking their avater with their nick, or part of their nick if they want to deter people from avatar theft. At least that way you have some proof that the original was yours.

Yeah, you're certainly welcome to use my own custom artwork created with my own hands. Why should you have to do anything for it, when you can just gank mine and confuse people?

Okay, I'll agree that using somebody else's avatar may not be right, but there's really nothing you can do about it. Complaining about it isn't going to stop it, so you might as well make it a good thing. The only reason why anybody would "borrow" your avatar is if that person thought it was a good one. Consider it a compliment.

finding good avatars isn't the easiest thing... i jsut got mine off a wesbite. If you're upset, contact the offender.
