View Full Version : The Official Xbox Kinect Thread: FOR EVERYTHING KINECT!

So, I went to GameStop at midnight to pick up my bf's Xbox Kinect. It is so much fun. It was really easy to set up and calibrate, but it definitely requires a lot of room. I would say much more than the 6 feet they recommend.
Ahh, it's great, though! :)

I'm passing since:
A) I have a Wii that NEVER powers on
B) I have a Move controller I used for about 2 days
C) I haven't really gamed on my 360 for about a year
D) No killer app so far ( at least for me)
E) I'm really running out of room for all my gaming crap. It's seriously getting ridiculous
Excerpts from Kotaku: http://kotaku.com/5680501/review-kinect
But the million-dollar question is: Is it worth $150? The Kinect comes with a full game, Kinect Adventures, which will take some of the sting out of the price. But it also comes with the inconsistencies described above and the lack of a killer app, the lack of a perfect game. At launch, Kinect merits a visit to your friend's house if you hear he or she has it. But it's not must-own yet, more like must-eventually own.
The Bottom Line
It was ironic that in searching for an electric socket in which to plug my Kinect a week ago, I had to unplug my Wii. I now need to find a second socket. Kinect doesn't replace the Wii any more than it does an Xbox controller. It's not even a sure thing as a games platform, not until it has its first great game. But it doesn't have to be. If Kinect becomes nothing more than a replacement for the TV remote, it'll prove to be a winner. For its launch price, though, it needs to be more. If Microsoft keeps supporting it, and if its flaws can be patched and improved through software, Kinect can be revolutionary.
I still think it's too much...would have bit at $99 without thinking but...I'm still thinking hard about the $149 price..I want it if I can get it at one online store that I have some GCs to use at..but otherwise..I might wait until after the holidays..

I watched some gameplay of Kinect Adventures and it doesn't really appeal to me at all.
It's geeky as hell but I do kinda want to play Dance Central: http://kotaku.com/5680719/review-dance-central

Sounds like me... I am tempted to get one, but the bundled game sounds very lame.
It sounds like a neat tech, and maybe fun to play with it. But I'm also concerned about having to move the coffee table around everytime.
Waiting to get the Sony Move.
Haven't played Xbox360 in almost a year... Still have Halo3 in shrink-wrapped, amongst few other games.
Wii can be fun as a party game, that implies that you need to have friends. :(

I don't own a 360 so no, but if I did, I still wouldn't for a few reasons. First it requires a lot of space to use, and my systems are in my bedroom which isn't that huge. Second, I don't like many of the limitations/flaws I've heard about it such as lag, playing while standing, etc.. And finally I just don't see anything appealing on it so far. Dance Central is supposed to be the flagship game, but I don't give a shit about mimicking someone's dance moves while listening to Lady Gaga or whatever else passes for music these das. I'm honestly surprised so many guys are.
This is made for the casual gamer and they'll no doubt eat it up.
edit: one more thing that bothers me is the size of the camera. I saw a demo on a news piece earlier and it looked prettty big in front of the TV. It just doesn't seem like it's a practical size for everyone's setup

If you watch the video review, you can get a good idea of the size since the guy has a Wii w/ sensor bar, PS3 w/ Eyetoy, and 360 w/ Kinect in the video.
Like I mentioned earlier, my home theater area is seriously way overrun w/ crap.
Wii + Sensor Bar + Controllers
360 + Controllers
PS3 + Eyetoy + Harmony Adapter + Controllers + Move + Buzz + Rock Band + DJ Hero
x41 headset + sony bluetooth headset + RS120 headset
Soundbar + subwoofer
DVR + Harmony remote dock
modem + router + switch

Do you have to re-calibrate every time you play a game like the PS Move?
LordOfChaos
11-04-2010, 05:16 AM
No... because:
1) my 360 is RRoD (FU M$!)
2) my living room is a living room first, gaming second, so stuff like furniture hurts the kinect
3) games look weak
4) $150? yeah no...

playing while standing
I was waiting for the 1st mention of that. Chalk one up to the "MS can patch through software" in the fact that it was fixed about a month before release. Basically...before the software was wrote so it used your hips as your main node and drew a skeleton out from there...you sat down and lost some nodes. Now, they have it detect and if you are sitting, your main node becomes your neck and it no longer takes input from your legs (since you are sitting anyway, you can't really hop around)
Also to the mention of how big it is...remember the "no controller" thing. Put two Wii Motes on your table vs. the Kinect...now how about a Eye + 2 Move's...what is bigger? Only downside is this doesn't go into a cabinet, but then again it is taking the place of a remote which you would have sitting on your end table anyway.
I am getting a Uverse disc to install uverse onto my xbox sometime this week. If Kinect worked with that...game over, I am sold. However, I don't think it has it in its controls...

No because I still have a little wiimorse and I don't expect this technology (Kinect or Move) to truly reach its potential until next gen. So until then....I'm staying away from both.
By next gen I would think they'll seriously improve the technology, have a better selection of games and the prices will likely be comparable to those of the 1st generation or wave of Moves or Kinects.

For POWER...
With an old Arcade, you need to plug the Kinect into the wall for power, and then USB to your console.
For the new 360S, you need just 1 plug that goes to the console that combines the power and usb into one connection.

You're probably right but personally I don't care which corporation does well, or sells more or is more succesfull. Or who sold more units for this quarter or last. All those things mean nothing to me. Who really gives a shit about that? Do those numbers affect your daily life? Do they affect the quality of your life and/or the amount of fun you derive from your games or console(s) of choice? I find it hilarious (not talking about you bonkman) when people argue over this or bring these type of sales figures and success rates up so as to validate the console they possess......as if it truly means anything to us or proves some sort of superiority.
In terms of gaming, all I care about is.....am I having fun? or Will I have fun with this thing? I'm pretty sure that's the OP's main concern too.

I would love to see some interaction on Kinect and these type of games. I know it is small, but what I picture is use of the VOICE control...like "Knife" or "Melee Now" or something...just some sort of voice control that would allow you to have 1 less button to worry about.

I don't know if that's true. I thought the Wii was probably the most succesful console (I have no clue) in terms of units sold. Yet their game selection leaves much to be desired. If my assumption on Wii sales is correct, it immediately invalidates your theory.
not to mention the subjectivity of "fun".
Am I wrong about Wii console sales numbers?

LOL...DS has a game called bomberman blast. Where you explode the bombs by yelling (in theory, "boom"). Granted, that may work a bit better on a console in your home than with a portable in public, but that application is still pretty tough to pull off with a straight face. Other commands, though, like team directives, would be perfect. Flank right now!

Yeah...because Super Family Carnival Animal Gamez 10 for Wii was far superior than the 8th iteration, as well as the competition Super Carnival Animal Gamez for Families.

The Wii has sold a ton, by far the most successful...and there are a ton of "good" games for it...it just isn't what we as gamers are looking for (kid based, non-HD, non-accurate motion control).
Also...maybe there is a "perfect" number of units sold... You have to agree...if consoles aren't selling, you won't get good games, right? However, you sell TOMANY units and you start to get more shovelware then quality products...think Atari of 83 and Wii of 08.

It will sure replace the on your face mic, which is really good. Also, this is good for the new Split Screen MP movement...now, both guys on the same console can talk. Is it just me though, I can never hear players (well) when the sound is coming from my speakers.
Also...it would leave options...i would say "melee" OR just hit the RB...my choice. It never hurts to have choices. I figure you could do voice in shooters for scope (I WOULD LOVE THIS) "Scope in" "Scope Out", throw Grenades, melee, and crouch/prone and maybe sprint.

We got Kinect Adventures (obviously) and Kinect Sports thus far. Definitely recommend getting Kinect Sports if you end up getting one and want more games than just Kinect Adventures. I look forward to trying out others.
As for needing more room, I mean 6 feet back from the camera. We put it in my bf's room and there's probably about 7 feet from the camera to the wall and we have to stand pretty much against it. We have to rearrange his room. I would say having at least 7-8 feet with some room behind you is ideal.
Do you have to re-calibrate every time you play a game like the PS Move?
Nope. Works fine just turning it on. I mean I'm sure there are gonna be sometimes we'll have to re-calibrate it, but we haven't had to yet.

Just wondering if this is still a whole novelty thing for you.

I did have a Wii and I traded it in. I played my 360 much more and the Wii collected dust. I'm definitely more of a "hard core gamer" instead of casual. A lot of what I didn't like about the Wii was how inaccurate the controllers were. It's also nice to not have to hold a controller. No worries about throwing a remote or something through the TV.
I'm sure there's a novelty aspect in it right now, but it is really just an amazing piece of technology. My bf loves using it with the ESPN app and we've had a lot of fun with the games. We bought Kinect Sports, too, and have mostly been playing that.
It's also awesome to be like: "Xbox," "Open tray" and it does it. It's also neat to select things just by moving your hands. I'm really looking forward to what else they'll do with it.
I am intrigued too. Did there seem to be much lag?
Lag is very minimal, not even noticeable.
I'm watching bf soccer right now, I can't even notice any lag or anything. Gameplay is so smooth.
Will this work with my old style Arcade 360? I was under the impression that if you didn't buy one of the new slim 360's then you would need an adapter. Is that so?

What kind of option is "If someone buys it for me"....who wouldn't take a free $150 electronic? I think that answer should roll up into "Maybe"...because those people are not getting it based on the Cost / Reviews just like everyone else.
"Not interested" and "too much money" should be separate items, but, yeah, I'm not interested. I already have a Wii, and, from the looks of this thing, the games it will be capable of will be worse than the Wii's. Plus I don't encourage jumping around inside the house. Translated: I have no clue what's in store for this peripheral, because no one does, but I'm going to go ahead and make a judgment about the beginning offerings for it and condemn it after 2 days of release. Translated: It's fine if you jump up and down w/the Wii that I said I owned, but not for the kinect. If you want to play the Kinect, I'm going to call you out for trying to be active while playing games. Again, this is fine for my Wii.

No. I'm busy and when I actually get a chance to sit down and play I just want to chill with a controller and not wave my arms all over.
That and even the motion control for the dash board and videoplayback don't appeal to me.
The differences between Kinect and Wii are that the Wii doesn't do jumping but it does have buttons and the precision to allow more gametypes (e.g., lightguns).
And, yeah, it's still going to fail. As an add-on peripheral, history is already on my side. Kinect's limitations and sucky foreseeable lineup don't exactly help it. It's all hyped up at the moment, but wait 6 months down the line and start asking about buyers' remorse.

You mean like all the buyers claiming Wiimorse are despite that console being a top seller? Microsoft expects to sell 5 million by year's end which they'll probably do easily. MS has invested heavily into Kinect. If you think they're just going to let it die out like other peripherals have, you're dead wrong. History is the reason why they won't let that happen. I guarantee they'll release a game that everyone will want to play next year that will keep the sales moving.
Also, you do realize that Kinect has room to grow right? Just because they're going with just the camera now doesn't mean they can't introduce some sort of peripheral down the line that would basically make it work just like the Wii or Move does. Kinect is merely a more advanced Playstation Eye if you think about it.

Also, you do realize that Kinect has room to grow right? Just because they're going with just the camera now doesn't mean they can't introduce some sort of peripheral down the line that would basically make it work just like the Wii or Move does. Kinect is merely a more advanced Playstation Eye if you think about it.
I think they should come out with something...I was talking about it with some friends who aren't into Tech at all...but the one guy has a Wii and plays it often (mario kart and beetles rock band). Anyway, they asked "so, you just swing your arm around like you are playing tennis and hit it with your hand? That is kind of silly...shouldn't you be holding something? when you are playing a game that you are supposed to be holding something"
I think they will come out with some things that the camera can pick up faster/more accurate...but not for a while since everything is sooo "YOU ARE THE CONTROLLER!"

Please. Microsoft will let anything die quickly, regardless of how much they've sunken into it. They're one of the worse (if you bought into their marketing) when it comes to that. You want some examples? Off the top of my head...Xbox1, Bob, ME, Vista, Kin, Silverlight (now only for Windows Phone [another DOA, btw]; Microsoft has moved focus to HTML5 over Silverlight), the list goes on and on... Lol, advice about Kinect is the last thing anyone looking for an objective opinion needs from you.
If you think what I said is incorrect or biased in some way, you need to start by looking at the stupid lineup thus far. Then, if you still want to go ad hominem on me, let's go.
Well, that "stupid lineup" comment sounds pretty biased from the get go. Besides that, you're a fairly well know Anti Microsoft advocate here in the GL and everything that comes out of your mouth is negative about the 360. Matter of fact, why are you even snooping around in this thread? I figured you would have coded some sort of OSX script to ignore any thread that mentions the 360.

you claim to have no bias in the first part of the sentence but you cant help it by the time your sentence is complete as you throw in a clearly biased opinion ("stupid lineup") Considering it's unlikely that you've actually even tested the games to come to a fair conclusion how are you being unbiased here?

ME/Vista are operating systems... they get updated all the time... You could say that for pretty much any operating system.

it's pointless to even try to reason with the likes of someone like you. Your fanboyism is so deeply entrenched you're not even aware of what true impartiality is. Your tacit assumptions on things are deeply ingrained which ultimately shows us a clear deficiency in terms of self awareness. People like you, indiviudals with a low emotional quotient (aka EQ aka Emotional Intelligence) end up at best as middle management wondering why you can't "move up in the world." You look out the window when looking to find fault as opposed to looking in the mirror.

Pretty sure the majority of the people on this thread both that are interested AND aren't interested are aware of the slow lineup (like it's a brand new product or something) and currently limited capabilities, but are aware and are looking forward to the capabilities and games.
To condemn it after it just came out really just shows bias and nothing more.

Can you use Kinect in the dark or low-light settings? I like to play games often with the lights off, and of course watch movies this way too.
Someone at CAG said this just now, which concerns me about lighting in general:
Anyone else a little disappointed with their Kinect?
How much lighting does this thing seriously need???
It's practically 2 pm in the afternoon, and it's sunny bright with all my window blinds open, I even have my lights on, but it's still not completely registering.
I'm playing behind 6-7 feet as suggested too, but I still have some lag issues. Anyone else experiencing this?
I'm actually more frustrated than I am having fun with it.
Anyone else experiencing lighting / lag issues?
Can't believe I went and picked this Kinect up at 7 in the morning at my local Wal-Mart (they have over 20+ in stock supposedly).

Engadget reported that you have to strike a balance between the infrared camera and the RGB camera. Too much light and the infrared camera can't work out depth, too little and the RGB camera can't see you. It sounds like the CAG gamer had too much light.

I've already heard feedback from about 4 people (including the OP) who have had to rearrange their living room around in order to get Kinect to work right. I imagine that's going to happen a lot. I also think we'll see a lot of returns because people that want it simply don't have enough room to play optimally.

Not really. You can play many Move titles sitting down and you an definitely play within about 4-5 feet of space. And I use my Wii about 3 feet away from my monitor so no you don't need 8 feet of open space in front of your TV/monitor for those like you apparently need for the Kinect. I haven't heard of anyone having to rearrange their furniture for the Move, nor the Wii for that matter. In less than 24 hours I've heard 4 people for the Kinect (the OP is planning to do so for her bf's room)
Check out this video for one of the people I'm referring to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbfwGRI8Vrw

That is a really small room. My bedroom is bigger than that  that's about the same distance I need to play Wii if you're not doing it the lazyass way and just flicking it on the couch. I have to move the coffee table in the center whenever anyone plays Wii for 2 player..otherwise you WILL trip...so I don't see the issue...seems exactly the same to me. I've played wii on my monitor as well before, and I think you could probably do the same with Kinect if positioned correctly. At least you get "Good" ands "Best" spaces. It's a different experience so of course it's going to need more room...I think it's the least thing you have to worry about at the current moment...I haven't decided to buy one yet since I stopped by to take a look at it today and saw only all the crappy games like "Joy Ride" and "Kinect Sports" for like $50 each :vomit:
At least the Wii came with Wii Sports to get you started.. Kinect Adventures seems just like one game rather than the couple of games you get with Wii.
I still think it would be funny to troll someone or annoy the fark out of them with this..like the Xbox "pause" & "play" features while watching a movie

I have yet to see a video showing performance from this thing near what I would consider acceptable or better than I expected....
Definitely not better than I expected..but I would say "acceptable". I just finished reading Engadget's review and I can see what ssj was talking about; Engadget said that the "six to eight feet" is more or less a requirement (six feet at least) otherwise it starts to bitch at you for not standing far enough away. Ugh. They said Dance Central is pretty awesome but Kinect Sports is apparently pure crap as you can easily cheat with it like how you can with Wii Sports.
I like the motion controls, but the games are just not there yet and ready for primetime. It is a G1 device so I'm hoping the developers make some use of it. They need to get some real shooters on there...I remember that they had Burnout Paradise as a tech demo when it was still called "Natal"...whatever happened to that? Took them more than a year...and they still have crapware which is what the Wii has been succumbed to.
This Ars review actually does a very good job of explaining what I meant when I said this.
I already have a Wii, and, from the looks of this thing, the games it will be capable of will be worse than the Wii's.
Take it away, Ars. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/reviews/2010/11/buy-a-house-clean-your-floor-move-your-butt-ars-reviews-kinect.ars/5
The lack of buttons with the Kinect is a big, big problem. There are very basic things that none of these games do. Controlling a character in a third- or first-person game? There is no easy way to do that, so no one does. The racing game takes control of the gas and braking away from you, because there is no way for the player to control it. Bowling doesn't allow you to control when you let go of the ball. There were multiple times when I wished for a button or two so the software didn't have to hold my hand quite as much.
Also, many of these games are fun and the experience really is impressive, but where do we go from here? I get the uneasy feeling that we've already seen most of what the hardware can do in terms of games, at least until Microsoft admits defeat with the lack of buttons and creates games that use both the Kinect hardware and a physical controller. Notice how many games mirror each other, in a thin selection of genres. How many times are we hitting balls coming at us with our hands and body? How many fitness and dancing games do we need? The demos for the upcoming Star Wars and Harry Potter games also seem too similar: you stand there, defeat all the enemies, move forward on rails, and repeat.
Hey, maybe someday some developers will come out with games that disprove these concerns, but until then ...
And how does dzap get away with saying "crappy games" and "crapware," lol? Those descriptors have gotta be more harsh than "sucky."
Well, so much for the marketing campaign. Turns out Microsoft has been well aware of these limitations with the whole "no controllers" angle and has controller usage in the works.
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-11-04-ms-hybrid-control-xbox-360-games-coming
"We'll continue to have controller-only games," said Alex Kipman, the brain behind the development of Kinect.
"We love controller-free games, we love Kinect experiences and we'll continue to grow our set of those as well. What we haven't really talked about, but exist, are hybrid games.
"Games that are using the controller, which we know and love, and pieces, if not all, of the Kinect experiences to again make those experiences more immersive, more fun and more emotionally connected."

Dzap was one word instead of "its crap because it is kinect and I said so"....it came off as "ok, that is his opinion" instead of how yours came off as "This is the way it is because I, as one person, said so." Don't want to start the fire again, but that is why so many had an issue with your post.
I see the distance thing as a killer...but my friend has a TINY room and was playing it...so I think it will work, but won't work for all games. I think it just makes you back up when it can't see all your body, so maybe the height of the controller needs to be changed too (optimal might be ~2 feet off the ground to always get your feet). If someone runs into issues, try that (moving the camera up/down instead of moving you back/forth)
I made my comments about the hybrids...I hope we get that for Gears actually, I'd be all over that and maybe that is why they pushed it back!!! "Switch Weapon" "STAB STAB STAB"
I just thought...if you are giving voice commands, that would get really annoying for the other people in your party...that might be a fail of the game. (Imagine if you heard the word "grenade" every time someone threw one in Reach...ouch)
And yea....is anyone debating the selection of games isn't quite there? They are all trying to make 100% use of the full body motion...so no shit we have seen all the Kinect can do...that is what the games are TRYING to show you, that was just a stupid comment on his part....that guy wins the Captain Hindsight award for the day.
But the games are very limited...once people get off that kick of trying to completely show off all that kinect can do, we will start to get a better range of games.

Doesn't that hold true for all games? Like all the Call of Duty or generic modern warfare shooter games, or RTS collect resource/create units/attack enemy games, or fighting games...They all mirror each other, just some of the mirrors are different.

Not sure if it was posted yet but -- the Xbox 360 S Kinect bundle doesn't contain a standalone power cord for Kinect, leaving folks who want to use those Kinects on older (pre-Slim) Xbox 360s in the lurch. http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/04/psa-xbox-360-s-kinect-bundle-doesnt-come-with-ac-adapter/
Why because the regular Kinect doesn't come with power adapter? Oh wait it does.
The only people this affects are multiple Xbox owners that bought the Slim+Kinect bundle and own an older Xbox.
I bet you 3rd parties and ebay will be crawling with these adapters soon.
I know I have absolutely no need for my power adapter that I got with the regular Kinect.
MS is a business they want to make money. If it means dropping a non-essential accessory for their Slim+Kinect bundle so that a customer can receive a $50 discount (yes I know it doesn't cost $50 for the power adapter), then it is better for the consumer. 1st time buyer buying the bundle will have absolute no need for the power adapter and in fact may confuse it and plug that in with the Slim.

Kinect is now my new stressful item in the house >.<
GL trying to play with a 4 year old and a 5 year old.... So annoying... lol.
Probably a little age inappropriate, they have no concept of how to work the system most of the time, and it ends up being more of a frustration than anything trying to let them play.
Once they are ingame they are ok for the most part, but working the menu system is sort of difficult for them... they don't quite understand that you just move your hand out, instead they walk off the play area or up to the screen trying to select the menu.
Damn MS for disabling controller controls for the menu all together.

Seriously? I know it probably makes sense in Microsoft's world, but you would think they would have allowed some sort of menu navigation with the controller as well or at least voice recognition.. That wouldn't have been hard to program in. I don't mind using your body for gameplay as it looks somewhat fun, but a lot of videos I saw about navigating through menus to get to games using hand gestures seemed a bit tedious at times.
I do feel for you with those kids, but hopefully they'll get the hang of it soon. Is this their first experience with games btw, or have they used the regular 360 controller already? I'm just wondering what impact it would have on a kid to start out with Kinect and then transition to using a controller.

There really aren't that many games that I am willing to let my son play. The extent of it has been Feeding Frenzy 2 and Plants vs. Zombies.
He does perfectly fine with the controller infact if I am not careful and not paying attention he will sneak and switch to dashboard to select a different game.
The navigation is perfectly fine for an adult, I actually don't mind it... it will be more of a hassle to switch between body nav to controller if you were actually playing it...
However, it would be nice while the kids are playing, I watch on the couch and select menus for them so they can just focus on playing the actual game.

If I don't see a BF special on this I may just pay full price in a few weeks but I may end up returning it if I find my room to be too small. I'm mostly interested in the fitness games and it sounds like they work well for that. Dance Central would be a good work out. Actually, contrary to how Phrozt likes to remember it, I said Silverlight was now primarily for Windows Phone development. HTML5 has video support, though it is still being fleshed out. If you think they're married to Kinect, you are fooling yourself.
There it is.

Why would it be updated if the phone is DOA as you claim? Lawd it's funny watching you try to crawl out of the hole you made for yourself.
And sorry, but if you watch the webcast, the majority of SL development is for web apps... not phone apps (of which there are already over 3000 in SL)
Perhaps you have it confused. DOA means it's going to be a dud in the phone market; not that Microsoft is going to kill it, though there's always a possibility they'lll do that too. The cellphone market is already preoccupied with Android v. iOS. Windows Phone is a sucker bet.

They need an exchange program. I am not head over heals for Andriod...I would give WP7 a try if I hadn't just bought an iPhone and Samsung Captivate (android)
to be fair, WM7 phone has been out what? 1 month?
Lets see how it fairs in a year

I've only had it up for 24hrs and feel the same but I'm also sore. Didn't get far before it told me to take a break. I have the same games and another Kinect on the way from the MS store. They shipped it two days ago after I canceled the order. No charge on my amex so far, should I send it back? ;)
(@ others, take that phone stuff elsewhere, this is for the kinect converts.)

umm, the tag line is "you are the controller"...not "put the controller IN you".

Call a doctor, it's lasted for more then four hours!
On that note it does give me the creeps looking at me. After checking all the privacy controls I still turned it around after use. The only info I got was
You can choose to turn certain Kinect features on or off. For example, you might want to turn off the chat microphone or you might want to turn off the sensor, without having to unplug it.
1.On your Xbox 360 console, go to My Xbox, and then select System Settings.
2.Select Kinect Settings.
3.Select the item that you want to change.
•Sensor: Turn the sensor on or off.
•Chat Microphone: Turn the chat microphone on if you want to talk to players while playing a game, or if you are using Video Kinect. Learn about Video Kinect. If you turn off the chat microphone, speech recognition still works.
Note: When you are using the Kinect Guide, you can turn the chat microphone on or off by hovering your hand over the speech icon in the lower-right corner.
•Speech Recognition: Turn on speech recognition if you want to use your voice to control your Xbox 360 console. Turn speech recognition off if you do not want to use voice commands (you can still use the sensor for chat). Learn about speech recognition.
I just want a shortcut to turn the kinect sensor off when playing non-kinect games. Am I missing something obvious?
btw I did mount it on the wall above the tv so I might even get two players in the zone.

So MS has announced they sold 8 million Kinects. Pretty damn impressive.
I've been contemplating picking one up but I think I'll wait to see if there are actually quality titles in the pipeline.

That's actually really amazing considering there isn't *that* much available for it...
Although, the fact that having the kinect offers a decent upgrade just in use of common functions on the 360 does have an added appeal to it...

Xbox bigwig Aaron Greenberg tweeted today that Microsoft has sold 10 million Kinect units and 10 million Kinect games. The news comes a little over a month after Microsoft announced it had sold 8 million units.
The sales pace of the Kinect isn't just fast, it's apparently record breaking. Guinness World Records announced today that the Kinect is the "Fastest-Selling Consumer Electronic Device" of all time. The device sold an average of 133,333 units per day in its first 60 days (starting Nov. 4, 2010). Shockingly, the pace was reportedly faster than that of the iPhone or iPad for the equivalent period.
I think that was pretty unexpected. Anyone still regularly playing theirs? Are there any even "real" Kinect games coming up?

Holy BEEEP, that is a lot...I saw one for $100 in Sam's Club the other day...but it was an open box. Our living room is too narrow though so the Mrs. slapped my hand :(
How have they only sold 10 Mil games? They aren't counting the packaged games as a "sale"? Nintendo always did... Or wait...does the Console Bundle not come with a game???

Ok, so there were 10 Million Copies of that game sold alone! Don't get why they wouldn't include that in their numbers...

I read another article and they have sold 10 million standalone games + the 10 million bundled with the Kinect for an attach rate of 1.0. Attach rate is important since thats generally where the company makes their money.
