View Full Version : Forum Improvement: Have summary post

Slick deals should really start a summary post like that of fatwallet. Someone could edit the first page and insert informative comments about the deal. This would really help newcomers a whole lot. They don't have to glance through about 305 pages to find the critical information.
Regarding who should add the summary, I think that the admin. of this site should give permission to all users with senior standing the ability to add a wiki right under the OP's Post. To determine eligibility, admins could use the reputation as a standard and set the limit to a certain number.
This feature will save us a lot of TIME. Many people above have mentioned that posting the summary isn't a job for just one person. I'm sure there are people out there that will take the initiative. It's not like every single deal needs a summary. I'm more concerned about those ongoing deals or the very popular ones that generates a lot of hits resulting in many pages of ongoing discussion.
I'm tired of having to comb through every single page to try to find a number to call, coupon to use, or something useful that the OP might have left out. I'm not lazy, but with a deal that's 100+ pages long, this could be a daunting task. This would also reduce the number of questions asked in the threads, therefore keeping it clean.
So please if you like this idea, give this thread a greeting and maybe the admins on this site will add this feature.

Are you volunteering to summarize all posts for this volunteer-based forum?

Agreed. It should be like a wiki, modifyable by anyone with a certain reputation and the thread starter no matter how many reps. This will allow the summary to be updated frequently while preventing misuse.
Or this way:
The feature should allow voting of a post to be moved into a summary, a new button that after 4 clicks moves the contents of the post into the summary section. This will prevent rep whores from always putting thier info in the summary.
:iagree:
I think adding the feature will allow the slow implementation of what we want, it will happen naturally, people are willing to help others out, no need to designate someone to go through all the posts...

Slashdot lets users mod posts, so the most informative are shown, while posts like 'Thanks a lot OP!" can be hidden from view...
woot has a handy feature that shows a summary of the most relevant posts right under the main post.

No, no. Reading idiots' posts is half the fun of SD.

What gives someone a "senior standing"? And are there enough seniors to make use of the feature?

Senior standing would probably be around 100 rep points. And there are alot of people with that many rep points.

Like when we gave bold members the ability to give negative reps, and they abused it :nono:
Not to mention, it's not hard to get over 100 reps. I did it my first month here.
Not to mention, how often & fast deals die, it would be a never ending job.

The members at FW seem to do it pretty well. Is it only limited to people with good reputation there?

Psst, this isn't FW, this is SlickDeals.net.

Psst...just because a certain website uses ONE feature it doesn't automatically make that feature a bad idea...

I agree with you. Don't let your pride keeps you from improving this website. I'm both a slick deals and a fatwallet member. But lately I find myself going to slickdeals more often. I love this site, I visit it everyday if not several times a day.

It's also one of the most confusing, irritating features of /.'s comment system. It took me a long time (> 1 year) to adjust to, and even still I'm not overly fond of it.
Fat Wallet has a post rating system that I believe works similarly, to the consternation of some users. TechTV's boards used to have a post-rating system that didn't hide posts, and this was largely abused.
It's a nice idea on paper, but it seldom works well in practice.

Exactly, that's what I mean! No need to be in denial here, we've all been to Fat Wallet, we all know it exists, and there is no reason to pretend it doesn't exist. I hope I'm not going to give anyone a heart attack here:
*FatWallet.com is real
*FatWallet.com is better than SD in the area of cash back rebates
*A lot of the good deals posted here are copied from FW *gasp!*
I was referring to the fact that at Fatwallet, the wiki works well. Of course I was talking about a different site. This site doesn't have that feature. Wasn't that the point of this thread?
Now, am I going to get banned for saying FatWallet so many times in the same post?
Sorry if this seems rude, 'cuz it's not, I just don't think it's necessary to be in denial about a competitor's site...
I like Slickdeals, and I rarely ever go on FW. But it deserves mentioning that FW is a great site and a lot of good deals come from there. Now, are you ready to admit that FatWallet.com exists?

Agreed 100%. Everyone gets all uptight when FW is mentioned and I can't help but laugh about it. FW's quick summary is great, but remember if it isn't available with Vbulletin, it won't get implemented. FW has a weird spinoff of FuseTalk if I remember correctly which has different features.
