View Full Version : SD refreshes in the background

I have a habit of leaving SD open all day long, no matter what else I am doing. It's not at all unusual for me to listen to music or watch TV on my computer, which requires turning up the volume. Recently, SD has started to refresh itself quite frequently. Rather annoying, but I could live with it if it weren't for one thing - the noise it makes when you reload a page. It's not too incredibly loud, it's not obnoxious, but hearing it every 10-15 seconds can kind of kill the suspense or mood of a movie. Is there any way I can turn this off?

Not trying to sound like an a$$, but could you mute your computer?

Not when my TV comes through the tuner card inside of it. That's why I have to have it up so loud - the max settings of the card just aren't high enough.

Why is it refreshing itself? Is this an ad thing? (I find it annoying especially when I want to post. I have to wait for the darned bloomin thing to refresh before I can even scroll down to the message box.)

I agree, it's annoying having to wait while it refreshes. And I think it is an 'ad thing', because when the 'refreshing' is happening, I see urls like 'ads.slickdeals.net/blahblahblah and 'yieldmanager.com' or some such at the bottom of my IE browser window while it's 'refreshing'.

If second-rate performance is ok with you.
Ok, sorry. Back on topic. I don't wanna threadjack my own thread.
Actually I've noticed this also, and it's happening with Firefox.

One of these days I probably will, to play with at least, but for now it's IE. :)
Getting back on topic, though, the 'refreshing' is actually more of a nuisance than an annoyance. But it only started doing this a week or so ago, so maybe there was just some kind of change in how the ads are served up?

And Opera as well. From a cursory glance at the page source, it in fact appears to be an ad refreshing.

If it constantly refreshes itself, then how does it log people off after 15 minutes of inactivity?
I thought it only reloads itself if you have your SD buddy list loaded. :idontknow

There's now a frame in the top-right ad location that is set to refresh every "300", which I believe is 300 seconds (5 minutes).

lol right....
My FF loads pages 120%+ faster than IE.

The server can track when you last loaded a new page. When the ad-frame refreshes, only the ad refreshes.

You do know you can mute all sounds windows makes right? As far as FireFox being a "second-rate" browser I suggest you do some research. Also install yourself a copy of IE7 and see who copied who. ;)
Control panel> Sounds and Audio Devices> Sounds tab.
You're welcome.

Aren't we cocky. I appreciate your trying to help, but there are too many sounds in Windows I do need to hear, especially when I've got another program full-screen over everything else.

Nope not "cocky" just annoid with anyone that refers to FireFox as a second-rate browser, compared to IE.
http://www.w3.org/
There are standards for browsers, standards Microsoft refuses to follow making life harder on programmers, and everyone else that uses the internet.
Anyway you can disable just the sound for IE.
Control panel> Sounds and Audio Devices> Sounds tab.
Windows Explorer> Start Navigation.
Change it to (None), and you will no longer have the annoying clicking sound.

In large part, Firefox copied Opera. And now IE is too :)

their name doesn't show up in the index, the little green light isn't lit, and when you click on "view user profile" it shows them not on and it shows the time when they were on last.
that all happens 15 minutes after the person's last activity (activity, meaning posting or refreshing a page).

oh - I thought you meant you were getting logged off the site, which didn't seem right.

Why would you want to?
It *only* refreshes the ad.
