I know, I know, it's retail, but anyone who has been trying to get one of these for Christmas this year knows that they've been out of stock just about everywhere, and price gouging abounds.
Get them while they last!

I bought one of the first batches that came out and it had the hot pixel video issue so I returned it. But heads up to any who might encounter it, Nikon has acknowledged the problem and "promises" to send out a firmware update. When that time comes I will rebuy the D7K. When I had it I love it! For now I'm stuck with my old D50...

I am in the same boat right now. I know the firmware update is coming out, but I am not doing anything until I see it actually fixes the problem.

Also have the dinosaur d50...and I love it! Was thinking of upgrading the body to d300s but now I'm having 2nd thoughts. Sometimes having too many choices sucks

Ugh, I've been checking everyday for ANY retailer to have it available. At least Best Buy says they will have it guaranteed for Christmas. D7000 here I come!! Unless I should wait til the craze goes away? Will it be cheaper? I doubt it? Newbie here ;) Hello.

Autofocus is a lot faster for birders. Think that's the main reason some might still choose a D300.

Looked at my invoice on a D200 I purchased back in July 07 1,495.00
What is my point? If you already have a D90 or better, invest your money in a lens (they retain value and are more useful than 2 camera bodies) *unless your a pro and need 2 bodies or more*
or you could hide the invoice in a draw and make it a point not to look at it after the purchase.
Yes the D7000 does well in low light and has a very good focus mechanism, but why buy it now? It has just been release, wait for a drop in price and then get it.

I think so, or I made it up - but it's faster than typing 'people who take pictures of birds'. :)
A number of bird photographers have complained the D7000 is similar to D90 in autofocus speed, nowhere close to the D300.

Interesting! If this is true, the D90 value has increased. (Especially since it is cheaper by a few hundred)

Well, most people don't shoot fast moving birds, and the D7000 has a lot of other features, improvements. The D90 is nearly as good if you just want image quality though, and don't care about video, weather proofing etc.
The D90 might be like my D50 - will keep it's value pretty well. My D50 cost me $600 like 6 years ago, and is still worth $250.

The D7000 is back in stock at Amazon as of today (very low in stock)...but they increased their price to $1499 body only. I am glad I purchased it when it was OOS for $1199. They shipped it 1 week after my order. They may have increased the price to try and sell out the d7000 with 18-105 kit they are selling at the same price. I figure that must be what they are doing because they have not gone out of stock of that kit for 2 months now, but they can not keep the body only in stock.
EDIT: My apologies...it looks like it is through a 3rd party ACE photo digital. AMAZON still shows OOS $1199...but I still did get it with in one week of when I ordered it from Amazon.

Amazon has the same price. It's through another seller ( Ace Photo Digital) that it's $1499.

Placed my order for D7000 from Abe's of Maine. Won't ship for another 1-2 weeks but was able to find a coupon for $20 off. So I ended up paying $1,179.95 (no tax and free shipping). Not often you find a coupon that works with the body.
They offered to sell an extra battery for $50...$20 less than retail. But I passed on it for now as I'm waiting for aftermarket battery.

Im not sure if anyone is following this thread still but i wanted to know if the D7000 was shipped out from amazon and abe's.
Finding a D7000 body at $1199 from a reputable retailer is becoming a real adventure.

The D7000 kit is readily available at Best Buy. Up until 1/24 there was a 10% coupon which I used for the kit, and then I sold the 18-105 mm lens for $250 on Craigslist, which brought my price down below $1199 for the body. That 10% off coupon comes back frequently so if you don't mind the extra hassle of selling the lens then this is an option for you. Otherwise you just need to get on the waiting list.
Awesome camera by the way.
