Admittedly this looks nice with no rebate, but there have have just been too many $5 AR deals on entry-level GPUs that this doesn't feel that great to me.

wow this is pretty crazy for 19.25 shipped a PCI graphics card that can accelerate hd video. My next victim will be a cheap intel atom board and a quiet htpc will be born

what makes this special is it is a PCI no PCI express thus it can go in literally any computer ever even crippled ones like intel atom boards

a 1 gb radeon 4850 was just available for $20 amir. How on earth is this considered a good deal? .. not trying to threat crap too much just sayin I would hold out for something better as they are about 20 different levels of video card performance between the 8400gs and the radeon 4850

The HD 4850 was a one time deal, like the 60 GB Phoenix PRO SSD's ($60) a while back

That's like comparing BF doorbusters to regular everyday deals

this is a "deal" because it is a PCI card, and it doesn't involve any rebates

unless you can find a cheaper 8400gs PCI card anywhere else...

True (even though I got in on both) and thank you for rementioning the feature of this (or lack there of lol) that sets this apart

While I completely agree the 4850 was a one time deal .... the point which i tried to further define was that there are like 20 levels of perfromance between this card and that card so more than likely a card that is at least a little bit better performance if not drastically better in performance will likely be available for the same price: lets just list a few cards that fall in between the 8400gs and the 4850

List below is taken from Toms Hardware from an old (read 2009) comparison of graphics cards...note that the top of the list 8800 gts does not perform nearly as well as the radeon 4850; Also note that the 8400 gs was second from the bottom of the list in 2009 ie it is really old crappy slow and probably doesn't perform as well as the video chipset built into many of the current generation motherboards. If you found any of the video cards below available for the jawdropping price of $20 they would be a better deal than this 8400gs including geforce 7300GT

Dear socrilles,

You are missing the point this is a PCI card thus it can go in those dinky old slots at the bottom of your motherboard usually reserved for usb 2.0 expansion cards and wireless cards (of the b/g variety).

AND in intel atom boards which are restricted to the slots they have, thus adding hw acceleration to the boards for 19 dollars and not 50+ which is what the ion commands

not true good for small htpc with an intel atom and boxee

most tvs these days can accept dci and a separate sound. Now it probably will not be 5.1 goodness but will still sound good in stereo

Yeah what he said. Heck I just got a sweet deal on a card at Newegg but I needed this one for an older system that I have. I guess I should have put that in the title huh?

pci deal of yesterday, pci-e deal of thursday

Is there a difference, then? They seem to be identical. Both are 8400 GS, except one is PCI and the other is PCI-E.
---
I asked this question in another thread, but...

How does this video card compare with the Radeon HD 2400XT? How does it compare with BFG's Nvidia 8600 GT?

My chipset is "nVidia nForce 430". Will this fit on there?

I have a PCI slot but a 56k modem is on there, which, obviously, I do not use and can remove. Just seems strange that a modem and a video card can share the same PCI slot.

I don't do any gaming on this computer anymore and am just trying to keep the computer as quiet as possible, possibly with a decent graphics card. My little brother plays Maple Story on it, that's basically it. So...will run Windows 7 and play maple story? Haha. Thanks.

yes theres a difference
if you have a PCI-E slot you DEFINITELY want a PCI-E card as the PCI-E bus is MUCH faster than PCI bus
its not going to beat a 2400xt tho and definitely not the 8600GT
yes- 430 chipset is fine, but if you are serious about buying a new video card for yourself, you may want to consider something better, assuming your board does have a pci-e slot
let me know if you would like assistance in finding a deal that better suits your needs...once I know those needs that is ;)

I just edited my post. Do you think it'll be able to manage Maple Story (lulz) and Windows 7? $13 already spent and it's already shipped so I think it's too late to jump on the PCI-E one (also it's sold out). I don't think it's worth much more time than that.

Really, my desktop is crap and I dont even use it. I don't even live at home anymore, actually.

th 8400GS PCI-E card should run maple story and win7 fine- assuming you have a PCI-E slot, assuming the card you receive isnt faulty, and assuming you dont run into any other unexpected issues :)

Haha, wow it doesn't even beat the ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT? That's pretty sad. That thing came with my computer! I might as well throw this thing away when it arrives, then. Oh well. That's what I get for being a noob :lmao:

How about exactly is this video card? My goal is to keep this desktop quiet. Currently I have a BFG 8600 GT (I thnk 512MB DDR3) but after a year, something went wrong and now the fan or whatever is extremely loud on it. I really don't want to bother because like i said, i've lost interest with computers and I don't care for this desktop. I want to make it a quiet computer again like it used to be so I want to get rid of this 8600GT and throw in whatever will operate Maple story and Windows 7. If it runs the two and does it quietly, I think I'm satisfied.

What do you think?

edit: I already purchased the 8400 GS (PCI version), not the PCI E one. I really hope they are similar in terms of abilities. Kinda lame to have the title and not be the same. Seems like I wasted $13. Also note that my power supply is 350W. It's TERRIBLE.

Does that work for a regular PCI-e x16 slot? I thought PCi-e 2.0's were a bit different? Anyway, thanks for all the help. If this crappy 8400 GS can run the Maple story and Windows 7 properly (small icons, desktop themes), then I would have no reason to complain either.

Geez, $14 poorly spent. $14 on a crappy item + 3 hours of research time :D.

Thanks for all the help. That looks pretty interesting. I had no idea they can have "fanless" video cards that are actually half-way decent. In fact, I didn't know fanless video cards existed. SMH :shake:

I might buy that on Amazon later on for $30~, although it doesn't seem to be worth it at this point for this desktop. Lulz.

I'll wait until this 8400 GS gets here. Man, if I knew this video card was so poorly rated, I wouldn't even have taken it for free. Guess we'll find out later.

Quiet >> Maple Story >> Windows 7.

There's one for $25.99 + $4.99 for shipping. But I think, according to its user manual, this item requires 400 power supply  FML. Oh well. I'll just wait until the 8400 GS gets here before I make any decisions.

I'm scared to even try to put on the 8400 GS. Sounds like cave-men technology. If nothing else, I'll just let this noisy BFG 8600 GT do its work on the computer.

Thanks again for all the help!

That fanless card looks awesome, though. I might check it out later on when I have time.

When the 8400 GS gets here, I'll insert it and give it a shot (though that's probably going to be next month because I won't be home). If it doesn't run Maplestory and Windows 7, I'm going to throw it straight into the trash. Come onnnn. It's 2011. We have stealth planes and so many crazy weapons of mass destruction, and yet they still make video cards that can't play maple story? :shake: Haha, only kidding (though not really).

I hope all works out. If not, I'll leave the 8600 GT in there for now.

Thanks man! Have a good one. I have to get some sleep before a long drive back!

Why dont you just disconnect the graphics card fan and add your own slow speed case fan to blow at the card? Adding a quiet case fan is cheap and you can just use something creative to just hang that fan so it is blowing right at that card so it wont get too hot. Thats what I did with my old 6600gt card when the fan started sounding like a vacuum.

I might actually try something like that. I have no idea what you're talking about but I do have a "picture" in my head from all the silly pictures of desktops that I've seen. I'll ask a friend to help me, though. If that works out, that'll be a fun learning experience. If not, whatever.

Definitely not buying any more cheap stuff if it's anything that requires too much additional information that I don't have. I spent $14 on it and about 4 hours total talking/chatting/reading up on it. Opportunity cost: somewhere I don't like.

Thanks guys.. Enjoy!
