Slick, what do you think about being able to get to this website, anytime, anywhere, from your cell phone. I did a little (very little) research, but this site seems like it may have some useful stuff. If you need help making it (if you decide to do so), let me know and i'll gladly help as much as i can.

Now that i really really think of it, my life really does revolve around this site... i signed up in June, but only looked at the front page, because i never knew how awesome forums are, and after i saw the forum, i started checking this website every day. Hours on end. It isn't quite the healthiest thing when you are sitting at your computer hitting F5 so the page reloads ever other second... Mod, delete this post, it will ruin our lives!

I would be willing to host the WAP site if needed, and offer help setting it up.
It would only have to have the front page slickdeals of the day so would load on your phone quickly
and maybe we could add a members pic of the day too taken on our camera phone :-)

Yeah, it would work out awesome, we should definatly work on it, slick... if we create the files, send them to you... can you put the files on the server? It would probably only be the main page, and that alone would be like 3 pages on a cell phone, but it is still worth it, and it would be easier to make the posts, we wouldn't put all that extra stuff at the bottom... not enough space on a phone!

i tried to access slickdeals using my wap it kinda worked but i had to scroll alot (press the next page button) i got into the front page but anything else i just didn't have the patience to wait for slow wap =\

I just looked at the source for the site that you made... It may be waaaayyy to big and that is why we are getting the error messages. Try just making it for today's deals? I'll check it when it's done! I did see some in php format, but i'm not sure if all phones can handle it.

It doesn't need a wml extension. The php sends a "Content-Type: text/vnd.wap.wml" header that tells the browser it is a wml file. The same thing is done with rss feed. It is supposed to work unless that is not the correct header?

The headlines are supposed to show up on the first page. The deal description is downloaded but is shown when you click on the deal. I'll see if I can make the download shorter.

This is easy I already have this on my 2 of my cell phones

just use the RSS feed to your phone and you can get updated easily.
You have to installed a 32kb app on your cell phones to read the RSS but that's it.

I can provide the app for the cell phones if need and make it downloadable off my site.

hmmm, i've never heard anything about an rss feed, i need to do some more research. Post a shorter version of what you had before, and we'll test it out.

This would be awesome if you get it to work! (i have an idea, theres a website, www.polyphonicringtonez.com, and they have this thing called WAP Shout, and what it is is where people on their phone can post messages, and it shows up on the main page, when people are at stores looking at deals they can post it up, just an idea?)


Try posting what I put up, that may work, i think everything is right. I was looking at my dreamweaver, and they have a wysiwyg editor in it for WML pages, you may want to try that out if you have it. But maybe Dreamweaver would test it out and see if it works by running all sorts of error handling and debugging stuff.

There are some pages you can download and look at the code from, thats where I got the code that I posted earlier, i just changed it around. www.acegames.btinternet.co.uk/index.wml . They have links to other WAP sites and you can veiw the source from those, it may work out better if you just write out the WML source by hand in notepad, and skipping the PHP coding for at least a little bit until you know that there are no errors in that part of the language. Good luck with this, it seems like you know a lot more about this then me, but if you have any questions, i'll be more then happy to help.

I think that is only for the newer phones, being as some Slickdealers are super poor (i'm in college, it really sucks!), we want to get away with a lot of the cheap stuff, meaning no high tech cell phone stuff, and the phones would crash if they even heard of the word 'app'. We also want to compress the pages a lot so you don't have to keep on going to multiple pages, if you go onto the mobile yahoo, like where you check your mail and stuff, they have the news, and each story is 5 or 6 pages long on a cell phone. It is a pain in the but because most cell phones are slower then a 56k modem. It takes me a good 10 seconds for each page to load. Compressing the main page to just list the deals, and not have the links, and keep the text to the minimum is what we have to do to make it available to everyone. Right?

Just get a Samsung i700. I can surf the net, actually READ webpages, etc. Heck, I even bought 4 250 gb drives from the $130 deal a few months back at a rest stop in Illinois! Also, it works great as an external modem if you know someone who has a laptop, you can get online anywhere you have cell signal!

Check back here, i'm sure slick will make some sort of announcement if it's on cell phones. I'm sure lots of people would use it. I would post it up now if i could, but I dont have a server... I tried putting it up on tripod. and it didn't work. Tripod and all those other free servers put the Ad's up, and the phone's can't handle it...

I currently use the RSS feed via a Firefox plug in on both my Laptop and Office machine. I do have a T-Mobile PocketPC phone, but doubt I would ever use it to check online sale prices, after all if there was something I wanted, I would not go through the effort of trying to buy it online via a small phone / computer.

The third link works to some extent, I can see the deals but the only one I appear to be able to click on for more information is the very first one.

The other 2 links didn't work at all for me

edit: I'm using verizon wireless with a free wap gateway if it makes a difference

just found this link yesterday and I'm still playing with some of the features
but basically it lets you make your own wap homepage with any links you want.

It also allows you to add rss feeds to your wap homepage which is another way that slickdeals works for me on wap.

The 1st link worked perfectly for me, and all the deals gave more info when I clicked the links.

The second link did not work at all - no connection found.

the 3rd link worked but only the krispy kreme link gave more info when clicked.

So I vote the 1st one is better

Hey slick, I think VBulletin has a special WAP thingy built in, I did a google search on WAP and forums, and stuff on vBulletin came up. That may be an easy way to make the site WAP enabled? Let me know how that works. I posted the code up on a WAP site to see what they say, I hope you dont mind.

They all worked for me, first 2 showed everything and the 3rd one just showed details for one of the deals.
All the deals were from Tuesday, not sure if you're just using those for testing or if its suppose to update.

As I remember the value of the id atrribute of the card tag must be start with letter (or may not even contain number).

Anyway, you may download the DTD of wml (3. line of your example) and check against your wml page with an XML-validor application (I think you can find many free).

Hint: You can use code vB code tag to make the code/wml more readable in the forum.

Slick, I'm back with t-mobiles free wap... they screwed up my account and I have it for free... being 4 months old and bringing this thread back from the dead, wap.php works great, couldn't have been any better (kinda). First off, I don't think too many people check this forum, mostly hot deals, so maybe at the bottom or something of the main page post about how you can now access this from your cell phone via wap. Also, when I access wap.php on my phone, I click on a link and it says response unknown, whats supposed to happen? Also, how about making the forums wap compatible too? It may be a little more difficult but it would be an awesome feature... I could go to the store and post a hot deal that I see there... right from my phone at the second i see it.

Are you using mobile alabamba? I just did a quick search vbulletin and wap and it came up (it took me forever to figure out how to download...) It is for PDA's and cell phones, and it is just a style for vbulletin.

This supports PMing, and logging in and out (obviously) plus some more... it tells you everything it does on the site.
