I was reading on DSLreports the other day that not all older routers with stock firmware will be compatible with IP v6 unless they can run a 3rd party firmware like ww-drt. now having learned this, it will be several more year before all the backend equipment is transitioned over to IPv6.

I have an IPv6 tunnel with SixXS & m0n0wall. You can also have 6to4, but it is not as effective as a real tunnel. It is like a translation from IPv6 to IPv4. 6rd (rapid development) is a new form of transition to IPv6.
A firmware update is all that is necessary for a router to support IPv6.
Not all routers will be updated though.
Native IPv6 is a long way ahead.
This page lists routers that support IPv6 out of the box, otherwise know as "IPv6 Ready Routers".

Where can I get native IPv6 / Which ISP's provide IPv6?

IPv6 is not a necessity yet, unless you want to get some free stuff, like free Usenet.

probably much sooner for asia, as they have run out of ipv4 addresses
