President Obama will announce Monday that he plans to cut the nation’s projected annual deficit in half by the end of his first term, a senior administration official said Saturday.

“This budget actually is going to assume that there will be a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood or manmade disaster in the United States in fiscal year 2010, and each year going forward 10 years,” the official said. “The Bush budget never assumed that.”

Under White House projections, this year’s inherited budget deficit of $1.3 trillion will be cut to $533 billion by fiscal year 2013, the end of the first term.

“So we’ll cut it at least in half,” the official said.

Obama also claimed he had a common sense approach to lower the average annual healthcare premium of families by $2,500.

Has anyone seen their premium go down?

(note: I kind of want a liberal to challenge me on Obama's claim so that I can pull up the youtube video with him at 20 or so campaign stops reiterating his $2,500 drop line. It's not like you can give him the benefit of the doubt with the 57 states comment).

You might note that the major provisions of his health plan are not yet in effect, and because of cowardly Democrats, didn't get the plan he wanted.

Of course to his detractors "announcing plans" is equal to making a promise.

"The budget will cut the deficit that the president inherited upon assuming office at least in half by the end of his first term," said Kenneth Baer, a spokesman for the Office of Management and Budget.

Obama's 2010 budget includes plans for defense cuts — including a rollback of the Iraq war — and ending the Bush administration's high-income tax cuts, the Associated Press reported Sunday.

The plan to reduce the deficit inherited from Bush involved ending the Bush tax handouts to the wealthy (http://news.firedoglake.com/2010/12/04/senate-gop-blocks-consideration-of-tax-plan-extending-rates-on-first-250k/).

Republicans continue to carry Bush's water (http://thehill.com/blogs/floor-action/senate/171191-senate-stops-reids-millionaire-tax-resolution).

The economy would have performed better if Congress had allowed a proper stimulus plan to have been implemented instead of one only half the needed size and relying too much on jobs programs through private contracts rather than direct government employment.

did you just say we relied too much on private jobs and not enough on public employment??
