What a crappy month! On top of DH finding out he has cancer, learning that my FIL's cancer has metastasized, today, we find out that not only did a CV joint go out on our ride, but so did the FARKING TRANSMISSION. $2500 if it can be rebuilt or $5000 if it can't. :ranting:
And then, I went looking for the bitch and rant thread, typed all of this, hit submit and the stupid thread is closed.:compunch:

Oh my.
Why do transmissions always go when everything else is shitty?
I had to replace mine in my 01 civic and ended up buying a rebuilt and having it put in. Then someone hit it a couple months later and it was totaled.

:comfort: I am sorry that you are going through this. You and your family will be in my prayers.
About your transmission, depending on your vehicle, you may be able to get a used transmission at a junkyard for around $750 and have a mechanic install it for another $750. It may be an option for you to check on. If you have a couple of hours to kill, you could call local junkyards, asking if they have a transmission for whatever vehicle you have. If they do, ask how many miles were on the vehicle it came out of and how much the are asking for it. If you find a transmission with low miles at a reasonable price, ask the junkyard people if they can recommend a mechanic that can install it for you at a reasonable price.

We called the junk yards and our mechanic searched through his network, but no luck finding anything that was worth the effort.

It's a Nissan Murano. Its a great car, but its a bit finiky and it's parts are a bit pricey.
My Nissan pickup has 253,000 miles and it's never had a wrench on the engine, other than an alternator and a starter. Apparently my Murano was made on a Monday morning or a Friday afternoon. :annoyed:
Happy almost birthday month! :bounce: will there be cake?

Is it a variable transmission? Those are big bucks. And like you're experiencing probably difficult to find a decent used one.
Luckily September's almost over.

Oh, and just for the record, it's the transfer case. The estimate is $3500. A used one would be $3100 and only a 6 month warranty, vs. a year. Of course, the new one will take 6 days to get here. Guess I will get a lot done around the house this week.
Most importantly, DH's bone scan showed that the cancer hasn't spread! :whee:

I also had a transmission problem with a Nissan Maxima. They rebuilt it but in a year it started acting up again. :shake: Seems like it was a very common problem for cars built that year. I wish you luck and hope things start to get better for you.

Got my car back today. Only $3500. :faint: and DH went in for a CT scan to see if he still had a kidney stone (not a good thing with a catheter). No kidney stone, instead, a bunch of gallstones. Poor guy, he's never had surgery and now it seems he will have his share.

Well, my FIL reported back to MD Anderson today to start prep work for the ablation of his tumor. When he met with the Drs., he was told that after the radiologist looked at the scans (Apparently he uses different viewing instruments) and the tumor is much larger than they thought. Now, they want to do an incision and remove it. (The last procedure was a needle and an ultrasound). It is most probably not metastasized prostate cancer, but renal cancer. At 89, surgery is not an easy option, but it may be the only option.

Well, we are in high gear getting ready for surgery on Tuesday. Couple of projects and general cleaning and I think we are ready. We should only have to mow once more this weekend.
Now though, we have a new wrinkle. My FIL's tumor on his kidney is not prostate cancer, but renal cancer. He is scheduled to have the tumor and part of his kidney removed on the 18th, 10 days after DH. His surgery will be in Houston, so I doubt we will be able to go, but lots of other family members will be there.
I never really thought about it, but it's far less invasive to remove the entire kidney than part of one, because more tissue is cut, blood vessels have to be rerouted, etc. The recovery time is twice as long and he will probably need a transfusion. I think he is wanting to keep as much kidney tissue as possible, because my MIL was on dialysis for the last few years of her life and he knows the risks. He has until 24 hours before surgery to opt for full removal. They said that either way he has about a 5% chance of recurrence, and then it would take years to become of any threat. At 89, I think his chances are good for remission.
Anyway, I feel like I'm breathing underwater again. I know that this too shall pass, but my days are this sort of weird high speed, slow-motion.
