View Full Version : What is the deal with women's fashion?

Have you ever noticed that fat women wear odd, maternity-like blouses that have a tight band under the breast area, but are really loose around the arms and the belly? And they usually wear black form-fitting slacks with that...

Hey lady, just because the clothes are loose doesn't hide the fact that you are fat.

What I wonder is why in-shape women think nightgowns that look like potato sacks are sexy.

OP, why are you so concerned about some fat women and what they wear?

Are you secretly attracted to them, but will not admit it publicly because it's socially unacceptable? Do you wish they would wear more revealing clothing?

What I wonder is why in-shape women think nightgowns that look like potato sacks are sexy.

Like the babydoll ones? I think those are cute! They have the empire waist and aren't super form-fitting.

Or maybe you're talking about a different kind. I don't really consider those kind to be "potato sacks." :dontknow:

"Empire waist" called that because it makes a woman's waist look as big as the Roman empire?

They wouldn't be half as bad if they had some kind of loose belt or little tighter waist or something to show some kind of curves or at least be flatter. Should make them red, white, and blue with stars and stripes on them and call them Liberty Bell gowns since the design looks like a bell.

Oh, I got it... we could call that type of waistline design "the bell curve." hahaha :woot:

Like these. These aren't the worst I've seen. The worst are the no-curves ones that also have the giant bell-bottom bottom puffed out that makes her hips look three times as wide.
http://www.123rf.com/photo_5693613_cute-and-sensual-asian-girl-wearing-purple-nightgown-posing-against-a-brick-wall.html

Or these. And the description... "romantic," "intimate." Yah, right.
http://shadowlinenightgowns.com/tag/shadowline-women’s-nightgown/

Look at this. What is this? I can see it being popular in Idaho. "I went to Idaho, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt." Just... no.

It may as well say "Not tonight. I have a headache" written on the front.

Oh goodness, you're right! That is hideous!

Babydoll nightgown is usually like:

http://i01.i.aliimg.com/photo/v0/390036131/Sexy_Cute_Babydoll_Lingerie_Sleepwear_Nightie_G.jpg

It's looser and flowing at the bottom.

Empire waist (which is usually a feature of babydoll night gowns) is like:

http://15dollarstore.com/img/7125_1_2564_p.jpg

Where there's usually like a "band" or something just under the bust. It'll be form-fitting on the top typically.

I'm not sure why they call it that and whether or not it has anything to do with the roman empire.

But it does a decent job at hiding the waist. Well, to an extent.

Doesn't bother me--I like the fact that people come in all sorts of shapes and sizes.

But then, I've gone to quite a few science fiction conventions over the years, so I've seen a *lot* of plus-size people (male and female) in skin-tight Starfleet uniforms, anime costumes, and fetish wear. More power to them--if people felt more comfortable with their own bodies, I bet they'd not only be happier, but have an easier time changing their bodies to be more to their liking.

Besides, people put up with me when I wear tight-fitting clothes, so it's only fair that I return the favor. :)

I bothers me because it is unhealthy, but for the most part, it's their choice just as it's my choice to live a healthy lifestyle. I know some can not help it because of medical conditions, but for the people that can, I can not comprehend why people would willingly choose to be unhealthy. I don't get a lot of the stuff that people do though.

I think that for the most part it's people's choices that causes them to be obese. There are some people with medical conditions, but it's mostly their lifestyle. I know someone that is overweight (by choice), and it is causing her all sorts of health issues.

Now you're judging yourself, missy, and that's just unacceptable! ;)

I don't think fat people want to be fat. In my younger years anxiety and depression were at the root of my ED's and no amount of therapy or meds ever really helped. I just had to sort it all out on my own. Whatever ED someone has there is always some mental and emotional component.

Seriously! I know a lot of guys who work out and you can't imagine how much they judge women.

Well, I've been doing it consistently since I was 15. I don't eat cake or potato chips or hot fudge sundaes (though I've been known to make cakes and hot fudge for *other* people) and I make time in my schedule for workouts and cardio and eating what I think I should, whether I'm at home or on the road--but that's my lifestyle choice and I'm laboring under no assumption that it's the "one right" lifestyle choice or that it's better than anyone else's. It's a significant commitment of time and dedication--but I don't have the patience for playing video games or watching TV, and it probably takes considerably less total time for me to do my exercise stuff than most people I know spend on the latter.

There are lots of people who play the piano better than I (and a zillion other skills); we all have to allocate our time and energies *somewhere*. I do what I like and what's important to me; the rest of the world does the same--we just pick different things.

I bothers me because it is unhealthy, but for the most part, it's their choice just as it's my choice to live a healthy lifestyle. Getting started isn't easy when it's hard enough to get through the day and make sure the bills are paid, food is on the table, and the dog hasn't pooped all over the carpet again. Starting a diet or exercise program is the first thing to get put off until tomorrow when there's more than enough to deal with today. And, probably not least because of body image issues, a lot of people tend to feel stressed out and self-conscious when starting out.

But it's great for the 24-hour-fitness franchises of the world: I've known way too many people who paid for memberships for years without ever showing up because they were always going to get started _next_ week.

Many moons ago my best friend and I got a room at the Red Lion where the Star Trek/ Dr. Who Convention was at for the weekend...our plan was to check out the all the cool SciFi stuff and hopefully pick up on some hawt babes there...oh man...:facepalm2: it was NOT a target rich environment:lol:

Cool! I even know one couple who decided to get married at a con (and the con made it one of the events). I've never had that kind of luck myself, but there are a lot of people I enjoy spending time with that I pretty much only see at the cons--and, by and large, even everybody that I don't know is friendly and fun to talk to. (Though I'm sure being a geek helps a lot with that.)

I tell people this all of the time! Because I make my living in a creative way, I am frequently told, "Oh, I could never do that!" But its really that my job is on display, so to speak. There are tons of things that I don't do well. I suck at Algebra and I make the world's worst fried chicken, to name two. Everyone has talent. The important thing is to keep looking for your niche and to ignore those that tell you you can't.

Not to mention that the cheapest food is usually the worst for you. With prices rising daily, it's hard to find ways to eat healthy and stick within a budget. I can't imagine being a single parent with several small children. Five apples cost me $7 today and they don't really taste that good. :annoyed:

Yes, especially when their stupid decisions effect other people.

I'm highly allergic to smoke. Being around it causes me to get sick.

What about people with other addictions?

Do shopping addicts bother you, too?

So, anyway, about women's fashion.... ;)

This thread was never about women's fashion.

OP, why are you so concerned about some fat women and what they wear?

Are you secretly attracted to them, but will not admit it publicly because it's socially unacceptable? Do you wish they would wear more revealing clothing?

Shopping addicts don't bother me like drug addicts and such. I think it is dumb to run up your credit cards buying stuff you don't need, and I know some drug store shoppers who have let it come between them and their spouse which is unfortunate. I love to shop, but I only buy what I can afford, and it doesn't come between me and dh. It's one of my hobbies . I rather do that than scrapbook or knit or something like that. I'm a collector. I love shoes and barbies!

My point is, everyone has a vice of some kind, and it seems silly to dislike people that have only certain ones.

They certainly do, but some are more dangerous than others.

Sometimes. But it's not for you or anyone to judge.

But I'm willing to cut people with certain addictions from my life. Like drugs. I'm not going to enable that which is what they want. I've done it because you can not help people that will not help themselves.

Like the babydoll ones? I think those are cute! They have the empire waist and aren't super form-fitting.

Or maybe you're talking about a different kind. I don't really consider those kind to be "potato sacks." :dontknow:
Making a thread doesn't mean that I am really concerned about what they wear. In fact, I don't really care what they were.

Oh no, I'm secretly attracted to them. I am open about being attracted to fat women, especially when they dress conservatively and avoid weird looking clothes.

If you didn't care, it wouldn't have even crossed your mind to make a thread about it.

So if your best friend had to have back surgery, and subsequently got addicted to his/her pain meds, you'd cut them out of your life?

Nope. I still think I don't care. Now, if I made 9 posts like you did it would look like I cared.

I'd try to help her the best I could. I will never enable a drug addict though. We've cut family out of our lives because of drug issues. It took them stealing from us. That was the breaking point.

I...But it's great for the 24-hour-fitness franchises of the world: I've known way too many people who paid for memberships for years without ever showing up because they were always going to get started _next_ week.

I just paid my 99/year renewal...and I;m happy that the Downtown Sacto remodel/expansion is going to be finished...it's impacted the attendance at the surrounding clubs with crowding and put me off from going as often as I should...I need to get in, get cleaned up and get to work (pm work outs don't fit my schedule, even though I'm NOT a morning person lol)

The con's were pretty fun...I do remember back to that same con that we walked into the star trek trivia room and the next question was "what the crono read out on Sulu's panel in episode...blah blah blah" My buddy looks at me and we both laugh, like um right like who the hell is going to know that...some dude up front raises his hand and gets the question RIGHT!!!!
Buddy looks at me and we both (without saying a word) get up and leave...we were out gunned and out geeked by a large margin!!!

I think people have more power over their own lives than they realize and almost everybody has more good things in their life than they think...because they forget to think about them and enjoy them. Most people focus so much on what they don't have and what they think they can't do that they forget to enjoy the wonderful things all around them--or they keep putting off enjoying life until they do one more thing...and after that it's another thing that they need to do first.

I can't say I'm immune to that myself, either, but at least I never forget to enjoy some of what I have at any given time in my life.

Not to mention that the cheapest food is usually the worst for you. With prices rising daily, it's hard to find ways to eat healthy and stick within a budget. I can't imagine being a single parent with several small children. Five apples cost me $7 today and they don't really taste that good. :annoyed:

The unfortunate fact is that it comes down to simple economics: food manufacturers try to concentrate all the "eat more of this" cues in processed foods while removing the food components that would signal your body that you've had enough--and put them into a form with the longest shelf-life and lowest manufacturing costs possible. It's not because they want people to gain weight, it's because the foods most conducive to overconsumption make the most money, are the most likely to get carried by the grocery stores (who want to see profits, too), and least likely to get discontinued.

Invent a potato chip where you *can* eat just one, and you've created a product destined never to make it past the first test market.

-- none of which I think about at all while people-watching. I just think people are interesting and I'm all for living in a world where people are different: guys covered in tattoos, a woman who was quite tall and slender with a big bulging forehead, a fairly heavy woman who seemed to be moving just fine on a pair of skinny metal legs like a Star Wars At-St Walker, a guy dressed in thugtacular "pants worn at knee level" style pushing a baby carriage through the grocery, a silver-haired older gentleman in short-shorts and bright blue thigh-high socks, etc.

I have a friend who lost all her hair from chemo when she was 12 and it never grew back (but the cancer never came back, either, so that's a pretty good trade). Unless it's cold, she never wears a wig or a hat because she thinks people should accept who they are and the world should too. I think she's got the right idea.
