Finally out of beta, eh? :)

It will be interesting to see user's reactions. Not everyone had tried or gotten used to the new version.

With the fine tuning done during the beta, though, I doubt that there will be any widespread negative reactions.

eh, I thought the old version was simpler. The lack of major contrast in the color of the text, and the much less noticeable borders/margins make it blend and blur

Site looks great! Thanks...

PS - I hope I'm not being feminist by saying this but... slickdeals.net is for a guy (like me) as a shoe store is to a woman... I always spend money on stuff I don't need...but hey - it's chea!!.

My 2 cents -which is a slick deal because it's worth at least a dime- is that now it looks like every other site on the internet.

I liked the old funky version. It had character... This looks like you poured it out of a can.

That's not to knock the designer(s) the site looks "in" and I'm sure that was the goal. I just liked the little more offbeat style. Like I said, it had character.

Hi Rev
10-03-2006, 07:49 AM
Wow. That was a surprise.
2.0 looks nice.

May I make a suggestion?
On the Home Page, the slick deals are left justified but the daily headers (Tuesday, October 3, 2006) are centered.

For quickly scanning the page (which is what we all do about 100 times a day), it would be easier if the daily headers were left justifed as well so that my eyes don't have to jump around between the header and the deals.

Just my $.02.

It's good to see Slickdeals evolving and rolling with the punches of Web2.0, rather than stagnating with an old interface.

APPEARANCE and ERRORS WITH CLASSIC SKIN and some other stuff...

I also feel the the contrast of the default colors is too weak so I switched over to the classic skin and noticed 2 problems right off:

1) The word "Expired" as annotations to posts are not colored in red so you cant see them easily at all.

2) The horizonal day title separators are not using the old GREAT contrast colors of dark text color on very light color, its much harder to quickly scan the page and see them. Please use the classic old colors for these as well.

And I completely disagree about that other poster who wanted to left justify the day title separators. The old interface also centered these, but worked fine for quickly scanning the page because of the higher contrast - if you fix the contrast (PLEASE at least do this as per the above for the CLASSIC SKIN) then your brain wont have any problem quickly navigating and scanning the page and making sense of it intuitively. Do not also left justify the day titles as this will just make it harder to quickly scan and distinguish the day separations.

Thanks.

Overall a good improvement, however I am torn:

Pros:

simple search box on front page
ability to use different colors/themes
"hip" look and feel

Cons:

text contrast mentioned by others (perhaps fixed with a new theme/color option)
old site was simplistic and did have character

Like most pieces of software or OSs, I immediately try to make the new like th old, however this is a step forward and we will all appreciate it in the long term.

kinda a Cosmetic glitch:

On front page when you expand an item by clicking its title, the + on the right should change to a -
It remains a + so that if you wish to close the item by clicking the - after you expand it in that fashion, you must click it twice, once so it DOES change to a - and once on the now changed to - for it to collapse.

I'm using XP SP2 and firefox with javascript enabled for slickdeals website.

Overall I think I like the changes, I LOVE the idea of personal sticky threads I can configure. I've come across a few little glitches and stuff like that though.

Try the other two skins... (scroll to the bottom left drop down)
Thanks, I found that option on the front page but didn't see it on the forums until I read your tip. I think I also prefer the classic color skin.

Unfortunately, that option doesn't seem to be "saved" or remembered. I end up having to select it for every single page, and even if I go back to a page where I previously picked it, it's back on default.
Is there a way to save that preferance for the forums? (I'm logged in to both forums and frontpage)
Also, another minor nitpick, changing the theme to classic doesn't affect the color of the main link bar at the top of the page.

Yet another possible glitch (or perhaps this is intentional), even if I'm logged into the forums, it doesn't log me into the front page (even after reloads). If I log out of front page, I remain logged in to forums. Just wondering why the login status isn't global.

I also like the idea of a previous poster to make the (expired) on the front page in red as it was before.

My previous post #107, I was mistaking a programmed behavior for a bug. I was clicking the title for a single deal in the day to expand, and since the + expands all that days deals, it should be expected to remain a + since one might wish to later expand all deals for that day even if a couple were individually expanded.
However, here's a modified glitch report, about the same thing, much more obscure though, and more of a nitpick. If one manually expands all the deals, the + remains a +. It should be a minus if all deals for the day are manually expanded :)

I wish the sidebar front page deals were all the way at the top. The front is so big and the search bar and other stuff that I never use is above it. Now I have to scroll down. MAKE EVERYTHING SMALLER PLEASE!! /me runs from change. I dont enjoy really at all. Still love the site though!

I thought that perhaps you'd want to compare them side by side:

*Also, you can click the little arrows at the top of each box in the right column to collapse it.

Invalid attachment (tried both FF and IE)

Do you know offhand which cookie it is? I tried IE and it seems to remember the forum style fine, so it must be related to cookies and or firefox.

I'll go ahead and clear all cookies set by SD and report back

Edit: Was looking at the cookies, there are 2 differant ones set that are called:
bbstyleid
one for forums domain and one for the normal SD page. I'll try deleting those first

Edit 2: Seems to work now. Musta been an issue with one of those cookies. I noticed earlier that the style cookie for the forums domain was set to 8, while the frontpage was set to 16 (which I belive is the new hybrid style).
My guess: It probably was a cookie saved from the time a while back I visited the beta site, and the most current version of the site doesn't use a separate cookie for forums anymore. Since after I deleted those both, only the main domain cookie was re-created.

So no need to re-create the issue. Thanks for the help on that!

Yep, no problems here. And I know the error you speak of, happens sometimes on pages with embedded WMV and other video things, I hate it.

Anyway, I have no problems with that error here on the SD site.

If it makes any differance:
I have javascript enabled for slickdeals domain but not for anything else on the SD page (such as the google analytics domain). As well I have a lot of ad sites blocked in my hosts file.

This is very interesting.... Do any of the front page links work for you at all?

I am guessing you are talking about the links in this front page post (http://www.slickdeals.net/?permadeal=8172#direct_deal_8172), right?

That is correct, the "features" link doesn't work. All the other ones seem to so far. Very strange.

How about the features link at the top of the page vs the one inside the SD 2 announce post on the front page?

they are differant. The one inside the post pops up a new window (maybe you have a pop up blocker?) and is:
http:// slickdeals. net /?pno=8172&lno=1&afsrc=1

whereas the one at the top of the front page is just:

Bug?: when viewing comments, going to "Thread Tools", then selecting "Show Printable Version", the SlickDeals Logo ( pointing to http://i.slickdeals.net/imagesd/slickdealslogonew3.gif) does not show up on the upper left hand corner.

Also, Is there any way to view all the comments on a single page with this new system? Or at least more than the current number of comments?

The individual thread forum pages sporadically end prematurely. I'm using IE and wasn't logged in to SD at the time. It wasn't just a one time freak incident. It happens quite often. I never noticed this behavior with the old interface. For example on this page (http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=339374&page=4) there was no content/footer following post #60 and post #60 itself was truncated. Here is what the bottom of the page contained:

I absolutely hate it! I think it looks terrible and is following the trend of far too many other sites in my favorites that I have come to stop visiting because of terrible page designs!

What is the purpose of the redesign, and was it really necessary?
The purpose of the redesign was to allow us to present a new set of features and functionality, while giving users enhanced control of themes and styles.

Additionally, we enhanced accessibility in terms of users being able to increase font-size, and page widths. Furthermore, the mainpage now allows you to view deals without being scrolled down to another point in the page.

Finally, we strove to continue the SD "Tradition" of the old classic colors by making a classic theme for our users. Yet at the same time we wanted to update the website to a more modern, streamlined, efficient design that would give new life to the SD website of yester-year :).

But rather, if you feel the design is "terrible", please provide constructive feedback so that we can continue to service our visitors and make the visit an enjoyable one.

Well, honestly I hate this new site... As I am a Graphics Designer / Multimedia person myself, I find that this new site has tremedous flaws in their design. The old design was very nice simple and effective, everything was super easy to see and read (which is very, VERY important in a webdesign).

This new site has annoying dark borders everywhere with the body/content being very light is NOT very professional. This makes it hard to read and see because the dark bars distracts you and the content is almost invisible since its sooooo light colored...

Whoever designed this, forgot the most important thing in web designing, distraction. Sure, its easy to make any site flashy... but whats the point if its not effective? The old site was great, very effective in terms of design, but not flashy... Maybe I should redesign slickdeals, keeping the classic feel but make it flashy... HAHAHA

l33tlion
10-03-2006, 10:39 PM
eh, I thought the old version was simpler. The lack of major contrast in the color of the text, and the much less noticeable borders/margins make it blend and blur

Yes, my points exactly...

yikes..

The older interface was so much better..

this will take getting used to.

I probably won't get used to it... annoying things and distractions will always be there...

the link posted by Redsolar works.
Invalid FAQ Item specified. If you followed a valid link, please notify the administrator (http://forums.slickdeals.net/sendmessage.php) is the error i get.

Before when i clicked the administrator I would get an Cannot load error. Now it works. As well When i click the administator now then click back the new features guide works fine, It will not work if I click the link on the main page or go into the entry in the forums and click it there.

i personally liked the old front page a lot better than this front page. the main reason that I say this is that i feel like i have to scroll my head from one side of the screen to the other just to read what the deals are... it goes against common sense that it is not centered and easy to read.

my suggestion would be to add another sidebar to the left side of the screen and condense the deals menu back into the center more. it doesn't really need to be spread out over the whole screen space like that.

btw, i love everything else :) good work!

Put your money where your mouth is. If you think you've designed a better web site, please by ALL means SHOW A LINK OF YOUR WORK. the new update will take some getting used to, but it definitely is easier to read, and less annoying then to keep jumping up and down the page. If you don't like this, then don't use bittorent or isohunt.com which already incorporates the drop down information page. it's very professional and easy to read. all i hear is a bunch of talk:shake:

Crap, garbage, you name it, this new design sucks. For all the reasons everybody has posted before me. The old site worked just fine no problems. People always have to mess with success. It's why I stopped going to FW, their totally stupid interface. Couldn't you have just left it alone and just added the few extra features to the old page?

Nam
10-04-2006, 01:56 AM
I personally don't like this design, I have a site that rank 8000 in Alexa myself, I know it's nothing compare to 600 of slickdeals, but still, my point is I do know what I'm talking about. The old site is easier to read, simple. I like the fixed width table, not percentage.

You might think the main reason is that people don't get used to it yet, but it's not a reason for me. It looks more professional, but the old look is what this site is all about: Slick deals, simple, effective. I never visit FW for this reason btw.

Just my 2 cents. I'll still visit this site anyway :).

First of all, I wanted to know if you've used the theme switcher which provides different color schemes, including a classic color scheme.

I also wanted to address the comment regarding "dark borders everywhere". The mainpage especially does not contain these borders. The headers are dark, but this is to seperate days. This is inherently similar to the classic design.

Finally, when viewing the content, it is on a light background with dark text, so I don't understand the issue that the content is "invisible". Rather it is a traditional high contrast site.

If you're willing to lend your experience, we'd be happy to hear your suggestions. It's easy to berate someone else's work, but all of these things are subjective, which is why we tried our best to create options for our users. Rather than trying to point out whats wrong, try to help us out by being very specific and/or providing constructive solutions. This website is here to cater to its users, and we do listen.

I loved the old SD; I dig the new SD. After a week of using the beta I found going back to the old style really strange. The look is great, but the deals and the people who post them are what makes it SD--even if I didn't like it I would stay for what's important.

I miss the old version. It was easy, simple, and the contrast was better for my eyes :( I have to search for whatever now. Nice try though

You simply go through a merchant that gives you cash back like the citi merchant network or fatcash. Whenever you click a link through slickdeals, slickdeals keeps all of the referral $$$. Great if you want to support SD but I rather have a cut of that referral $$$ by going through a diff merchant. :yummy:

Thanks Vster! I will definitely look into that.

Have you tried clicking on the button on the right? It'll make the frontpage use a fixed width and thus making it more centered.

it took me a bit to find those controls, but it was exactly what i wanted! thank you! :)

I appreciate all the work, but I liked the old interface better...

the front page login doesnt seem to work. i enter my login and pw and it tells me that its loggin me in, then takes me back to front page with login and pw fields empty again.

also, not to say that i dont like the new design (its pretty sweet) but is there an option to go back to old style layout for those who dont want to use new one?

nvm. Classic style seems to be easiest on my eyes. i think ill use that one :)

Issue with the RSS,

I tried adding the RSS link for the Hot Deals, Freebies and Main Slickdeals page to My Yahoo!, but it does not fetch info for the Hot Deals and Freebies, not sure where the issue is.

I can still fetch the Hot deals link...

May be coincidental, but I'm having more migraines since the changeover.

So I heard a rumor on the grapevine that we now can have avatars at 100x100px if we are bold members. However, when I went to resize mine, it still said that I could only have one at 66x66px. That topic was then deleted. So, I'm really confused as to what is going on, and what the real story is on avatar size.

Please help!
I'm pretty sure I read something regarding this too, and I seemed to remember it being somewhat official...(I even told someone else this had been put into effect - sorry GG!)

Can anyone respond as to whether the 100x100 is still a goal?

100x100 is unlikely for bold.

By the way...if you go to classic and increase the font once or twice it helps keep the migraines at bay

Who determines that deals (on the front page) are expired? How do we flag a deal as expired to the appropriate authority?

The Mod Alert function is the best way to alter the Mods that the deal is expired.
