I notice many people asking questions in this section as well as others about reputation points. I think by adding more info to the FAQ we can answer most of these questions.
Here is my suggestion...taken partly from the lounge FAQ section that is currently under construction. So if all this info isn't right, let me know :)
If you have less than 50 posts you can rep others but it will not count towards their reputation points. Instead of showing up green under their user CP function, it will be grey. However, if you have less than 50 posts, but have been here at least 2 months, your reps will count towards other user's reputation.
Your reps may be worth 1,2,3 or 4 points. There are 3 ways to increase how many reps you give others :
1) Each anniversary of your membership, the reps you give will increase by 1.
2) As your reputation increase, the reps you give others increase as follows:
10 - 499 reps = 1 rep (If your reps are not gray.)**
500 - 999 reps = 2 reps
1000 - 1499 reps = 3 reps
1500+ reps = 4 reps
3) Every 10,000 posts, your reps with be worth 1 more.
Just a suggestion I thought would be helpful to new members :)
cliff notes version:
If you have less than 50 posts, and have not been here at least 2 months, please stfu, no one cares.
I'm not sure this is actually suposed to be public FAQ knowledge.

Even just including this paragraph would take care of a good deal of confusion.

Yes, please! I've been trying to figure out how to give rep points & thumbs for a thread, to no avail. The FAQ says what both of these things ARE, but not how to do them (AFAICS).
On a tangentially related note, I was a member in '04 and my old account no longer exists. That'll teach me to read without logging in! Going to try and actually be part of the community this go-round.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you SlickChik. I think everyones reps should count. I can understand a sliding scale kind of thing (based on the number of posts and rep points you have) determining how much the rep points you give are worth. But, people who do not post much & N00bs are people too, so I think its unfair to make their "votes" (ie: rep points) invalid.

It is all to prevent rep abuse. In the past people have made bogus accounts to rep themselves. By requiring 50 posts or 2 months, it decreases the chances of people abusing reps and causing rep inflation.
