Some (don't remember who) posted about listening in to the Redplum conference call wherein they discussed strategies to reduce redemption. Reducing the value of the coupons will certainly work.

Sounds counterproductive for RedPlum, though. I'm sure these companies who place coupons in a RP insert must pay RP something, hoping the coupons are redeemed, thus increasing sales. Lower value coupons = less redemption = less sales = less incentive for companies to advertise/place coupons in RP.

“The combined effect of the economy and increasing coupon redemptions are prematurely exhausting annual consumer promotion budgets in the second half of 2011,” said Alan F. Schultz, Valassis Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. “We believe marketers will expand their consumer promotion budgets in 2012 to accommodate the increasing redemptions as they have in the past. We are also counseling clients to proactively manage redemption costs by controlling the variables we know influence redemptions such as coupon face values, coupon durations and multiple purchase requirements.”

My husband is working towards an MBA. He and I have this discussion all the time. Companies often make MORE when they sell LESS. Crazy!

Exactly right. Its kinda hard to make any money when your paying everyone to take the product you made!

RR's & ECB's & catalina's are generally money the manufacturer has given the retailer to promote/market their wares. They pay for the coupons to be produced, the creation of the product, its distribution to the stores. They pay more for better shelf placement.

But don't think its that show. The manufacturer's have long known we've been doing this. Its been the economy thats created this problem, give or take since Jan 2010. Many more are struggling now then since in along time. Redemptions are through the roof, with no slowing in sight.

But these companies will always compete with one another for sales. The values may be down this week, but it wont last. The big values will return, at least if the manufacturers expect to have any Q4 sales.
