I would like to suggest a third option for reputations - Hidden.
Hidden would hide the actual number but still allow people to rep you if they were so inclined.

just trying to understand... why would you want to hide your rep numbers? i can see turning them off because you don't buy into the whole rep idea, but if you want to get repped, why do you care if people see how much you have?

Maybe its for those people that don't really care about reps, but are sick of others complaining that they can't rep them  Or maybe if they like to see the comments for the thank yous....:dontknow:

I believe you yourself confirmed that reps do / will have value. Ie: boldness, avatar size, other:dontknow: At least I thought it was you.

yeah. there are benefits for reps. regular users can get bigger pm boxes and other carrots with high reps.
not saying i'm against this at all, just don't see the point of hiding the number.
random.

I don't think I really like that idea, but I can't come up with a solid reason as to why I don't.
I like it, but thats because I hate people.

Obviously your user title would go bold at 100 and your rep box would go blue then purple as your reputation grew.
I think this is a very nice idea.
There may be some people who would like to participate in giving/receiving reputation points, but may be shy about showing their number.
I can understand that with all the changes taking place here lately, that it may be a busy time to implement an option like this. Nevertheless, I really hope this is considered.

why would you be shy about giving your number? I like it though, since many just want to see the comments, and don't care for the number

The position of MODship is not about popularity. I would like my reputation hidden so that it's removed from the mix.

Makes sense. I'd like the hidden option to take the number out of the mix also. For the most part the deals or opinions I post are judged on their merit and not my reps, but hiding the number would just eliminate the variable IMO.

I like this idea.. but i think that instead of it saying "Hidden" there could just be the green/blue/purple box instead of any wording.

A shifty-eyed avatar looking guilty, perhaps? ;) Just kiddin'. I really do think it's a great idea. Perhaps instead of saying "hidden" it could say "private." Might seem more "friendly" that way?

Alright, well, something shorter than "Hidden" I think the whole word just clutters it up.

But isn't part of the point of reputation to know how reputable a user is, and can thus potentially guage how reputable a deal is? If a user's rep is hidden, people going into the thread (especially new threads or those less commented on) one of the whole points of reputation would uesless. Even though the box color changes, that's only when you start getting into really high numbers, and even knowing is someone's rep is 10 vs. 50 is useful. It's called "reputation" for a reason - it's not just a "score"!

19 huh? I'm trying to decide how much weight to give your argument.
Actually If I just look at your words and judge for myself, you make a good point. But since you can turn them off I don't see why you can't have them hidden. Personally, I think the veracity of your argument/deal/post should be given more weight than the number next to the word Reputation :dontknow:

Even when I started here, I looked at the deal and not the rep or post number of the user.

So I might not have a high rep or tons of posts yet, and am still getting acquainted with SD... but if you look at all the time (er, days) I have spent on SD in the time I've been here (a bit embarrassed to admit, when I realized, it made me cringe a bit :omg: ) I think I have been learning enough about SD to be able to comment! ;)
But anyway thanks for looking past my "Reputation" and at what I had to say! :)

I have an extremely dry whit... so you must know that my comment was to make a point that Rep number is not the only or even best indication of how good a deal/argument/post is. Some people get a significant amount of reps from one really good deal.

There’s no such thing as dry whit, especially on a message board. This “dry whit” gives the impression, at least to me, that you think that you’re better then us. I'd like to be on your side but saying that you're a Mod and that we wouldn't understand just makes you sound elitist. I’m sorry but that’s just the impression that I’m getting from it.

I evaded the question in hope that debate on this idea would continue without my opinion. I think the idea has merit on it's own regardless of my reasons for wanting it. I don't think I'm better than anyone here... It seems my limited time and short responses due to me selling my house and worldly belongs and moving to Chile in two months may have inadvertently contributed to your perceptions.
If there is something more specific i've done to you, feel free to send me a PM.

I like this idea...
I like to get private thanks through the rep system (instead of PM) for anything I post that others enjoy, but I don't really think that the number of private thanksI have received in the past should be a factor in whether or not deals I have posted (or advice I have given) is good or not. I know for a fact that I have posted advice in the tech forum that someone with more rep than I posted just after I did. The person thanked/repped the person with more rep, and casually mentioned thanks to the rest to me. Now I can't say for sure that rep is what caused the credit to go to the other person, but it was certainly suspect.
I am part of another forum who did something similar a while back and made it mandatory... it didn't have any negative effects other than people wondering why they couldn't see the rep.
