What happened was we did a phone trade and he gave me his Iphone which I thought was fully working. I tested it out and everything seemed good. I go home and the usb cable that plugs into the Iphone only goes in halfway and if I move the cable just a little bit it disconnects from the computer. I contacted him and he says its a small problem and he didnt think he should have ran it by me. Now he is ignoring me after I asked him to just undue the trade or pay $20-$40 so I can fix it somewhere.

Well Im kind of ticked off and dont get how someone would just do that and not try to resolve the issue. And before anyone goes and says its my fault that I didnt test the phone, no one would think to plug in a usb cable to see if it fits in the Iphone. Anyways, stupid of him he forgot to wipe his contacts and his facebook account. What would you do in my place? Let it go? Iphone warranty ran out so its coming out of my pocket.

Just suck it up and go fix it at a store. Trying to get back to him will just make you feel worse. Maybe you got a good deal and now spending a couple bucks extra to fix it will just make it an "ok" deal.

At the end of the day you learned a good lesson off cl trades. I have seen much worse ripoffs.

I have another iphone and the cables work on it but none work on this Iphone I just received. To the other poster: I know its his contacts as he has pictures that go back almost a year so it was his personal phone.

Technically no bc you own the phone now. However, if you really wanted to do this, do it at a local SB or something, so that IP is not traceable, but then it's Apple, so secure anyway.

No, because it isn't entirely his fault - you didn't fully test it, so be a grown up about it.

Also, impersonating someone is often(always?) illegal, so technically you could get in trouble if someone decided to push the issue.

He's the idiot for not wiping his data. I say he should get what's coming to him. This is a lesson people need to learn when passing off their electronics to other parties.

I have no sympathy for idiots like these (aka "I left my facebook account logged in at the Apple Store.")

I'm not saying destroy his life...just post some crap on his profile so he'll know how to change his password. Privacy is more important than ever nowadays, and generally people are too loose with their data.

OP is at fault for not checking for hardware defects, but even if that wasn't the case, he should have still wiped his data.

OP, have you ever heard the saying, 'Caveat Emptor'? If you really have, as you claim, "bought over 200 iphones" that were used and this is the first time there was something wrong with something on one of them that you didn't check before buying, then you need to go out an buy a lottery ticket. Either you're the luckiest person in the world or you're lying.

Reread my post. I said I inspect my phones thorough but Im not someone who is going to do a 100 point inspection and wait an hour testing every single thing. So yea its the first one out of 200 where the USB port was broken. But anyway this is all my fault and you guys have common sense. Cheers

How about you read my first post and you'll know. All the post was about was whether I should drop it or do something about it as I had his info. Instead couple idiots turned it into how I'm the one to blame for this happening to me because I didn't check the phone properly. It's a f***ing USB port! Ask ten people that bought a phone on Craigslist and see if even one checked the port. You probably won't believe me when i say this and tell me I'm a liar and need to stop creating threads everytime I get screwed on Craigslist but I also sold 100's of phones and guess what not one person checked the port. But I'm guessing they are idiots because checking the port is crucial or you are asking for trouble right? I didn't create this thread for you to tell me what I did wrong. Like I said earlier if you wait long enough someone will come along to turn it around where OP is in the wrong when this thread wasn't even about that!

OP, a 100 point inspection isn't required to find a broken USB port.

One of the major things you do when inspecting a phone is plug it in to make sure it will mount correctly.

He's a jerk for not telling you, but life aint always fair.

Should you mess with him a bit? Yeah for sure!

I sold a professional Nikon on Craigslist recently. The girl didn't even touch it before giving me the money. I had the original box and I swear if I didn't open it to show her the contents she would have taken it without looking at it. There could have been a brick in the box and she wouldn't have known. Whenever I buy something I throughly check it to the best of my abilities, even bring my own accessories to test if I'm planning on using the item(s) with other things. Don't screw with him, you don't know him. It's your fault you didn't check the phone out.

Well, chalk this up as a lesson for next time.

You should absolutely be doing a thorough inspection and asking questions. As others have mentioned, caveat emptor. I definitely agree that the guy (ethically) should have told you what was wrong, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do your own due diligence to ensure the phone is working properly. You're both at fault here.

Obviously he screwed me over and I cane here and said I had bunch of info on him and asked what you would do in my shoes. I don't really care if you all check the port as 100's of people I sold my phones to never did and I never did. But that'd not even the issue so fuc**ng drop it.

I did put in his status that he's in Al Quida(sp).

Fix the phone or resell it as is.

Or you can whine about it on a forum. Your choice.

He was asking for it walking down a dimly-lit street dressed like that.

But, yes, correct. It is the OP's fault he failed to realize there are more evil people in the world than he apparently realizes.

Wrong. Physical damage is especially what I'm looking for when I'm looking at used electronics. I always check all of the ports and memory card slots to see if they're in good physical condition and I check every button to see if works AND if it 'clicks' like it should. I'd also inspect the area near the ports to see what kind of wear it has. I once turned down an HTC Incredible because the area near the charge port was so worn that it wasn't even black anymore (The Incredible is red plastic painted black, so heavy wear is super easy to identify). The last thing I want is a charge port that's 1-2 years old with heavy use already.

Let me just say this. I bought over 200 iphones in my time and never needed to plug it in and everything worked out as I test what I buy to what I consider to be thorough and last thing I should do is check a usb port on the Iphone or worry about it. Blaming me for not doing a 100 point inspection is just wrong. Just because you bought a phone or whatever else once a year and have the time to do that 100 point inspection than thats your decision. Dont tell me thats its my fault for being screwed just because I didnt test one thing.

pretty funny you're calling others idiots.

why don't you be thankful that this is the first issue you've had from buying hundreds (which sounds like a damn lie anyway) of phones. seriously, you could've got a phone that simply quit working all together, and you'd be more screwed. you're crying over nothing really considering the minor issue. and yes it is your own fault, no one else. changing the subject to "I screwed myself on a craigslist transaction" would be much more appropriate. then you post it online admitting fault (whether you believe it or not) to a public forum, and feel bad for not listening to what everyone is telling you. learn much.

would you feel better if we told you to go hunt him down? - yeah go do that, so we can read about it on the news. you bought something AS IS = buyer beware. you're acting like you bought a used car, didn't have a mechanic check it out, and days later the tranny went out - again that would be your fault, not the seller. get it

Man, you still don't understand the word "partially" ?

Nobody was saying it was entirely your fault (until after you went crazy about it), only partially - I repeated several times that most of the fault lies with the person who sold it to you and didn't tell you, but there is a small portion of the fault that lies with you for not testing it.

How do you not understand this?

I sold a $100 phone recently on c list. I started showing the guy everything is functional... then, judging by his demeanor, I said, "I don't have to be doing this because you're going to buy this anyway, aren't you." "Yeah." 'Course, some people simply live in shadier areas than others and expect people to be evil.

I thought about making one about Madoff screwing me out of my life savings on an investment transaction, or having the head guys at Enron do the same, or getting my car stolen because I dared to drive it in theft-capitol San Diego, or maybe one about getting mugged while buying a bad-USB-port iPhone off Craigslist, to see if those things would also be considered my fault, but eh.

His fault for having faith in people? Sad that those who trust others are considered fools but no matter this was not an obvious issue and could and is a mistake most would make . Its not like the phone was dead or did not work upon inspection

yeah but Master OP phone buyer/inspector has done this 200 times before, so, yeah, duh

People who knowingly invested in Madoff are at fault. Those who trusted their money with others who put their money unknowingly with Madoff are not at fault.

Important to distinguish that.
