The professional term for what I'm asking is "letting" and what I'm referring to is the view you have when you first enter a forum, and see the listing of threads (which I'll call an index, for lack of a better name).
I think this is an issue SD might want to be seriously thinking about as people like me migrate more and more to widescreen monitors. On a 21" CRT (traditional 4:3 computer monitor) I can see thirteen threads once I scroll past the page header. Even if I close out three of the browser toolbars on Netscape 7.2 I still can see only a maximum of 15 thread titles per page. Put another way, there is more dead cell color visible than there is text.
I'm not suggesting an ugly stripped-down model like, er, some other sites heh ;) but SD might want to start thinking about this. I'll be migrating to a 24" Widescreen which has a PIVOT mode (in other words, I can physically rotate the monitor to place it in a PORTRAIT orientation; ideal for web browsing) but most widescreen monitors don't have this capacity.
And thinking on more of a macro level about website design generally . . .
The trend to widescreens augers for page layouts with menu(s) framed and positioned vertically on the side as opposed to the top of the page. There will be ample room for advertising — indeed there will be more as the screens get wider — thus allowing content alone to occupy the focus of the web browser.
I realise SD is on a vBulletin interface and (any) prepackaged forum program has the structural limitations native to that program, but I would hope they give SD enough wiggle room to tighten up the thread listings at a minimum (?). These are merely cell padding issues if I am not mistaken.
Anyway, let me know if that feature is available now and I'll tighten things up so I can see more thread titles per screen. Thanks. :)
