View Full Version : Circuit City blocked?

I'm an employee at Circuit City, and I stop in at SD multiple times per day to keep track of the deals going on in the world. I do this not only for my self, but so I can be aware of unadvertised deals I can show to my customers, and what I can expect my customers to come in asking for. It's a perfect one-stop-shop for me to find out all the deals going on at my store, and others (so I don't have to stop at several websites and/or make several calls to verify pricematch requests). Many of my coworkers make full use of it, as well.
Well, we used to anyhow.
A couple weeks ago SD apparently blocked all traffic from circuit city IP subnets. SD can no longer be accessed from any Circuit City store computers. I'm not totally sure of the reasoning on this, but I just want to send out a plea to lift the ban! Please, I need to satisfy my fix while I'm at work, plus SD is SUCH a handy tool!

I think you've got it backwards. From what I understand, it was CC that blocked all access to SD. So you're gonna be calling corporate. Good luck.

I don't know whether it's true or not, I'll have to take your word for it, but often store employees take the deals for themselves before we (the SD community) get them. This may have been put in place to block that.
Personally I think it's great, if true....

Why on earth would they do that?

You make it sound like I'm not part of the SD community.
I am as much a part of the SD community as anyone else on this board. The fact that I might have slightly quicker access to in-store-only-deals at CC if I happen to be working at the time is just one of (the only) perks of the job, I guess. And, it definitely shouldn't outweigh the fact that I let my customers know about the deals, as well as using the knowledge of deals at other stores to offer pricematches at my store and get my customers the best deal. Think, for a minute, about the percentage of slickdeals that run through this site that are in-store-only at Circuit City; those are the only ones that a CC employee has any advantage over you. Is that really worth banning them altogether over that tiny fraction of the deals?
And, in regards to the other reply, about SD being blocked at corporate... I was just giving it a bit more thought, and CC's internal net access all funnels through a proxy at corporate. If they block a site from corporate and I try to access it, then I get a page telling me that it's blocked, and who to call if I think the blocking is in error. I get nothing of that sort when accessing SD: I merely get no response. As such, I'm certain that the blocking is on SD's end.

That's a rather good question...
I'll find out in the next couple days.
I imagine there are several, and the subnet is blocked.

I heard that CC blocked SD in their stores so I figured I would help them out. Anyway, the ban has been lifted. In exchange, I expect CC deals posted by you. :D

Heh, OK!
TBH, so far I've found out about any deals going on at CC here before I find out about them at work. The one exception was the $150 Canon A75 a couple weeks ago, but it was posted within 30 minutes of when I noticed it, and before I could post it on my lunch.
But, anyhow, thanks for lifting the ban! :-)

I never work sundays, so I miss out on seeing the sunday ads first. Once in awhile I get to peruse the ad the night before (depending on when I work, and when they arrive). But, frankly, the real slick deals at CC are not in the Sunday ads, they are the pricing flubs (which are rarely tied to the sunday ads, and are the type of thing that I often find out about here before I stumble onto them at work), and older out-of-program items moved to clearance (which are going to be a YMMV, since only a handful of stores will still have them in).
For instance, one clearance slickdeal that I'm aware of now is on a Belkin "High Performance Computer Kit" (including a 500va UPS, optical mouse, USB cable, parallel cable, high-grade phone cable, mousepad, CDRs, and CD stand). The new price just downloaded from corporate for $32, previously ~$150. My store was one of the last to have a couple in stock in our district, so good luck. Brand/Model: BLK A8E278
I'll definitely post any I become aware of. Do bear in mind, though, that posting ad material before it's officially released will get me fired, so don't expect me to do it.
